Estimating the number of genetic elements that defer senescence inDrosophila

Summary Although many different physiological and biochemical changes characterize the process of senescence, little is understood of the genetic elements that determine its age of onset. We provide here the first estimates of the number of genetic factors that extend longevity inDrosophila melanogaster. Life span was measured in F₁, F₂ and backcrosses of true-breeding long and short-lived stocks ofD. melanogaster, established by selection. Estimates of the number of effective factors delaying senescence range from about 0.3 to 1.5, indicating control by a single factor. The distribution of longevity shows this to arise as selection acts on the short-lived parental stock. Life span is extended at the cost of early fecundity.     

Plasmid profiles and antibiotic susceptibility of Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae serotypes 1, 3, 5, and 7

Abstract This paper describes the plasmid profiles obtained for 73 of 96 field isolates of Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae serotypes 1, 3, 5, and 7. We also characterized the antibiotic susceptibilities of these 96 isolates. Because of the high proportion of isolates resistant to some of the antibiotics, no conclusions can be drawn as to the role of plasmids in antibiotic resistance.     

Prostaglandins may play a signal-coupling role during phagocytosis in Amoeba proteus

Summary Phagocytosis in Amoeba proteus can be induced with prostaglandins (PG). In addition, arachidonic acid (the fatty acid precursor to the PG-2 series) also induces phagocytosis. The induction of phagocytosis with arachidonic acid can be partially inhibited by the cyclooxygenase inhibitor indomethacin. Phagocytosis in the amoeba can also be induced with the chemotactic peptide N-formylmethionyl-leucylphenylalanine (NFMLP). The peptide presumably induces phagocytosis by interacting with receptors on the amoeba surface, which may initiate the release of arachidonic acid from membrane lipids. NFMLP-induced phagocytosis can also be partially inhibited by indomethacin. It is suggested that PG's or biochemically related substances may play a signal-coupling role during phagocytosis in the amoeba.     

β-thalassemia mutations in the Portuguese population

Summary In this study we have carried out haplotype analysis on the -globin gene cluster and characterized the -thalassemia mutation by oligonucleotide hybridization in 14 patients with thalassemia major and 5 with sickle cell/-thalassemia originating from southern Portugal. We found that three mutations, namely the °-39, ° IVS-1 nt 1 and ⁺ IVS-1 nt 110 are prevalent accounting for 53%, 32% and 10% of the -thalassemia chromosomes respectively. In general each mutation was associated with a specific chromosomal haplotype; the ° mutation, however, was linked to three different haplotypes. These results indicate that three oligo-probes complementary to the most common mutations allow prenatal diagnosis by oligonucleotide analysis in 96% of the couples at risk of having offspring with thalassemia major in southern Portugal.
