1. Dried collodion membranes are known to swell in water and to the same limited extent also in solutions of strong inorganic electrolytes (Carr and Sollner). The present investigation shows that in solutions of organic electrolytes and non-electrolytes, the swelling of dried collodion membranes is not as uniform, but depends on the nature of the solute. 2. The solutions of typically "hydrophilic" substances, e.g., glycerine, glucose, and citric acid, swell collodion membranes only to the same extent as water and solutions of strong electrolytes. In solutions of typically carbophilic substances (e.g., butyric acid, valeric acid, isobutyl alcohol, valeramide, phenol, and m-nitrophenol) the swelling of the membranes is much stronger than in water, according to the concentration used. For the brand of collodion used the swelling in 0.5 M solution was in some cases as high as 26 per cent of the original volume, as compared to 6 to 7 per cent in water. Therefore, in these solutions the "water-wetted dried" collodion membrane is not rigid, inert, and non-swelling, but behaves as a swelling membrane. 3. The solutes which cause an increased swelling of the membranes are accumulated in the latter, the degree of accumulation being markedly parallel with the degree of their specific swelling action. 4. The anomalously high permeabilities of certain carbophilic organic solutes reported by Michaelis, Collander, and Höber find an explanation in the specific interaction of these substances with collodion. 5. The use of the collodion membrane as a model of the ideal porous membrane is restricted to those instances in which no specific interaction occurs between the solute and the collodion. 相似文献

Selection for increased resistance to Salmonella colonisation and excretion could reduce the risk of foodborne Salmonella infection. In order to identify potential loci affecting resistance, differences in resistance were identified between the N and 61 inbred lines and two QTL research performed. In an F2 cross, the animals were inoculated at one week of age with Salmonella enteritidis and cloacal swabs were carried out 4 and 5 wk post inoculation (thereafter called CSW4F2 and CSW4F2) and caecal contamination (CAECF2) was assessed 1 week later. The animals from the (N × 61) × N backcross were inoculated at six weeks of age with Salmonella typhimurium and cloacal swabs were studied from wk 1 to 4 (thereafter called CSW1BC to CSW4BC). A total of 33 F2 and 46 backcross progeny were selectively genotyped for 103 and 135 microsatellite markers respectively. The analysis used least-squares-based and non-parametric interval mapping. Two genome-wise significant QTL were observed on Chromosome 1 for CSW2BC and on Chromosome 2 for CSW4F2, and four suggestive QTL for CSW5F2 on Chromosome 2, for CSW5F2 and CSW2BC on chromosome 5 and for CAECF2 on chromosome 16. We have developed a personal-computer-based water quality analysis system for river basins. The system estimates potential N outflow by model and calculates actual N outflow from monitoring data. For the former it uses the potential load factor method to estimate annual nitrogen load from various sources and runoff potential from each area of land in a basin. For the latter it analyzes water quality monitoring data in relation to meteorological data. We used the system to analyze N outflow in basins around Lake Kasumigaura and the Yahagi River in central Honshu, Japan. The land around Lake Kasumigaura is rather flat, and about 25% is periodically flooded for rice and lotus cultivation. The land around the Yahagi River is mountainous, and much less land is flooded. In the Yahagi River basin the actual N outflow agreed closely with the potential. However, the actual N outflow in the basin around Lake Kasumigaura was much less than the potential, suggesting that a large part of the N load is denitrified in flooded soils. This further indicates that a sequence of different land uses including flooded rice fields is an important factor determining N outflow in basins in Japan. On the basis of the above analyses, we incorporated a denitrification model into the system that enables us to estimate N balance in a designated basin; this system may be helpful in the formulation of scenarios of land use and soil management for improving water quality. 相似文献

A phylogeny was generated for Leiognathidae, an assemblage of bioluminescent, Indo‐Pacific schooling fishes, using 6175 characters derived from seven mitochondrial genes (16S, COI, ND4, ND5, tRNA‐His, tRNA‐Ser, tRNA‐Leu), two nuclear genes (28S, histone H3), and 15 morphological transformations corresponding to features of the fishes' sexually dimorphic light‐organ system (LOS; e.g., circumesophageal light organ, lateral lining of the gas bladder, transparent flank and opercular patches). Leiognathidae comprises three genera, Gazza, Leiognathus, and Secutor. Our results demonstrate that Leiognathidae, Gazza, and Secutor are monophyletic, whereas Leiognathus is not. The recovered pattern of relationships reveals that a structurally complex, strongly sexually dimorphic and highly variable species‐specific light organ is derived from a comparatively simple non‐dimorphic structure, and that evolution of other sexually dimorphic internal and external features of the male LOS are closely linked with these light‐organ modifications. Our results demonstrate the utility of LOS features, both for recovering phylogeny and resolving taxonomic issues in a clade whose members otherwise exhibit little morphological variation. We diagnose two new leiognathid genera, Photopectoralis and Photoplagios, on the basis of these apomorphic LOS features and also present derived features of the LOS to diagnose several additional leiognathid clades, including Gazza and Secutor. Furthermore, we show that five distinct and highly specialized morphologies for male‐specific lateral luminescence signaling, which exhibit species‐specific variation in structure, have evolved in these otherwise outwardly conservative fishes. Leiognathids inhabit turbid coastal waters with poor visibility and are often captured in mixed assemblages of several species. We hypothesize that the species‐specific, sexually dimorphic internal and external modifications of the leiognathid LOS provide compelling evidence for an assortative mating scheme in which males use species‐specific patterns of lateral luminescence signaling to attract mates, and that this system functions to maintain reproductive isolation in these turbid coastal environments. © The Willi Hennig Society 2005. 相似文献

Eradication of alien species is a key conservation tool to mitigate the impacts caused by biologic invasions. The aim of the
present paper is to review the eradications successfully completed in Europe and to discuss the main limits to a wider application
of this management option in the region. On the basis of the available literature – including conference proceedings, national
reports to the Bern Convention, etc. – a total of 37 eradication programmes have been recorded. Thirty-three eradications
were carried out on islands and four on the mainland. The rat (Rattus spp.) has been the most common target (n = 25, 67%), followed by the rabbit (n = 4). In many cases, these eradications determined a significant recovery of native biodiversity. Differently to other regions
of the world, no eradications of alien invertebrates and marine organisms have been recorded; regarding invasive alien plants,
it appears that only some very localized removals have been completed so far in Europe. The limited number of eradications
carried out in Europe so far is probably due to the limited awareness of the public and the decision makers, the inadequacy
of the legal framework, and the scarcity of resources. Synthetic guidelines for improving the ability of European states to
respond to aliens incursions are presented.
