In the Magellan Region of southern Chile (52 degrees 20'S - 55 degrees 30'S), the edible urchin Loxechinus albus is collected by 1200 artisanal fishermen, of whom 450 are divers. About 360 small fishing boats and 54 transport vessels carry the fresh product to 16 processing plants. Landings of about 27 000 tons were recorded between January and December 1995. Test diameters of urchins harvested monthly were measured for a total of 119 239 specimens, and 36 406 specimens were individually weighed; sex determination was carried out on 2 314 specimens. Field data indicate that the harvest was about 6.6 x 106 dozen urchins (this is a measuring method employed by fishermen in the region), with an extractive effort of 14 753 diver/days. The fisheries yield ranged from an annual minimum of 235 DUDD (dozen urchins per diver/day) to a maximum of 660 DUDD. In overall terms, the lowest average yields were between January and April (415-427 DUDD), and the highest yields between May and December (456-510 DUDD). Mean sizes increased from June to November and decreased from December to June. Size frequency of males and females were polymodal, with the most relevant modes at 72-84 mm in males, and at 79-88 mm in the females. The percentage of individuals below the minimum legal size (70 mm) did not exceed 4.9% for males and 3.6% for females. The size-weight records fit a power model which suggested that this species has a negative allometric growth (b = 2.007). Regarding weight, urchins in the size range from 80.0 to 84.9 mm were those with the maximum contribution to the regional landings. The highest values recorded for the utilized condition factor were: Average Condition Factor (ACF) = May to July, and November; Isometric (or Cubic) Condition Factor (ICF) = July; and Allometric Condition Factor (ACF) = June. Spawning occurred mainly between August and September, and ended by the end of October. Exploitation of this species represents one of the main sources of employment for the artisanal fisheries sector in the Magellan Region. The main difficulty observed in this fishery was obtaining a sufficient supply of urchins with a yellow-gold colored gonadic material, which forms the basis for demand of this urchin by the international market.  相似文献

Geographic variability in the physiological attributes of widely distributed species can be a result of phenotypic plasticity or can reflect evolutionary responses to a particular habitat. In the field, we assessed thermal variability in low and high intertidal pools and the distribution of resident fish species Scartichthys viridis and transitory Girella laevifrons along this vertical intertidal gradient at three localities along the Chilean coast: Antofagasta (the northernmost and warmest habitat), Carrizal Bajo (central coast) and Las Cruces (the southernmost and coldest habitat). In the laboratory, we evaluated the thermal sensitivity of fish captured from each locality. The response to temperature was estimated as the frequency of opercular movements and as thermal selectivity in a gradient; the former being a indirect indicator of energy costs in a particular environment and the latter revealing differential occupation of habitat. Seawater temperature in intertidal pools was greatest at Antofagasta, and within each site was greatest in high intertidal pools. The two intertidal fish species showed opposite patterns of local distribution, with S. viridis primarily inhabiting the lower sectors of the intertidal zone, and G. laevifrons occupying the higher sectors of the intertidal zone. This pattern was consistent for all three localities. Locality was found to be a very important factor determining the frequency of opercular movement and thermal selectivity of both S. viridis and G. laevifrons. Our results suggest that S. viridis and G. laevifrons respond according to: (1) the thermal history of the habitat from which they came, and (2) the immediate physical conditions of their habitat. These results suggest local adaptation rather than plasticity in thermoregulatory and energetic mechanisms.  相似文献

High conductance, calcium- and voltage-activated potassium (BK) channels are widely expressed in mammals. In some tissues, the biophysical properties of BK channels are highly affected by coexpression of regulatory (beta) subunits. beta1 and beta2 subunits increase apparent channel calcium sensitivity. The beta1 subunit also decreases the voltage sensitivity of the channel and the beta2 subunit produces an N-type inactivation of BK currents. We further characterized the effects of the beta1 and beta2 subunits on the calcium and voltage sensitivity of the channel, analyzing the data in the context of an allosteric model for BK channel activation by calcium and voltage (Horrigan and Aldrich, 2002). In this study, we used a beta2 subunit without its N-type inactivation domain (beta2IR). The results indicate that the beta2IR subunit, like the beta1 subunit, has a small effect on the calcium binding affinity of the channel. Unlike the beta1 subunit, the beta2IR subunit also has no effect on the voltage sensitivity of the channel. The limiting voltage dependence for steady-state channel activation, unrelated to voltage sensor movements, is unaffected by any of the studied beta subunits. The same is observed for the limiting voltage dependence of the deactivation time constant. Thus, the beta1 subunit must affect the voltage sensitivity by altering the function of the voltage sensors of the channel. Both beta subunits reduce the intrinsic equilibrium constant for channel opening (L0). In the allosteric activation model, the reduction of the voltage dependence for the activation of the voltage sensors accounts for most of the macroscopic steady-state effects of the beta1 subunit, including the increase of the apparent calcium sensitivity of the BK channel. All allosteric coupling factors need to be increased in order to explain the observed effects when the alpha subunit is coexpressed with the beta2IR subunit.  相似文献

The first South American case of human trichinosis, resulting from the consumption of roast wild boar (Sus scrofa) is reported in Chile. The patient presented fever, diarrhea, myalgias, facial edema, sub-conjunctival reddening, photophobia, eosinophilia, and elevated glutamic oxalacetic transaminase. The diagnosis was confirmed by two immunoenzymatic tests (ELISA) using somatic and excretion-secretion antigens.  相似文献

A family of aryl isothiouronium derivatives was designed as probes for cation binding sites of Na(+),K(+)-ATPase. Previous work showed that 1-bromo-2,4,6-tris(methylisothiouronium)benzene (Br-TITU) acts as a competitive blocker of Na(+) or K(+) occlusion. In addition to a high-affinity cytoplasmic site (K(D) < 1 microM), a low-affinity site (K(D) approximately 10 microM) was detected, presumably extracellular. Here we describe properties of Br-TITU as a blocker at the extracellular surface. In human red blood cells Br-TITU inhibits ouabain-sensitive Na(+) transport (K(D) approximately 30 microM) in a manner antagonistic with respect to extracellular Na(+). In addition, Br-TITU impairs K(+)-stimulated dephosphorylation and Rb(+) occlusion from phosphorylated enzyme of renal Na(+),K(+)-ATPase, consistent with binding to an extracellular site. Incubation of renal Na(+),K(+)-ATPase with Br-TITU at pH 9 irreversibly inactivates Na(+),K(+)-ATPase activity and Rb(+) occlusion. Rb(+) or Na(+) ions protect. Preincubation of Br-TITU with red cells in a K(+)-free medium at pH 9 irreversibly inactivates ouabain-sensitive (22)Na(+) efflux, showing that inactivation occurs at an extracellular site. K(+), Cs(+), and Li(+) ions protect against this effect, but the apparent affinity for K(+), Cs(+), or Li(+) is similar (K(D) approximately 5 mM) despite their different affinities for external activation of the Na(+) pump. Br-TITU quenches tryptophan fluorescence of renal Na(+),K(+)-ATPase or of digested "19 kDa membranes". After incubation at pH 9 irreversible loss of tryptophan fluorescence is observed and Rb(+) or Na(+) ions protect. The Br-TITU appears to interact strongly with tryptophan residue(s) within the lipid or at the extracellular membrane-water interface and interfere with cation occlusion and Na(+),K(+)-ATPase activity.  相似文献

A boy with Down syndrome due to a free trisomy 21 also had a metacentric Y chromosome with an arm euchromatic and the other heterochromatic inherited from his phenotypically normal father. This chromosome was mitotically stable and hybridized with the DYZ3 probe precisely at its primary constriction; in addition, a subtelomeric Xp/Yp probe gave the expected signal near the end of the euchromatic arm. So, the proband's karyotype was 47,X,inv(Y)(p11q11.2),+21. Given the high frequency of both chromosome anomalies, we regard its concurrence as a mere coincidence. This observation, along with previous reports, allows us to classify the apparent pericentric inversions of the Y chromosome into two types: "true" inversions characterized by an alphoid single centromere and mitotic stability, and "false" inversions in which a nonalphoid centromere has taken over the usual alphoid centromere; indeed, these chromosomes are dicentric and mitotically unstable. Finally, the inv(Y) polymorphism in man compares with that documented in other mammal species, in which the rearranged Y chromosome neither impairs the fertility nor has other phenotypical consequences.  相似文献

The advances obtained through the genetic tools available in yeast for studying the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) biogenesis and in particular the role of the mtDNA encoded genes, strongly contrast with the very limited benefits that similar approaches have generated for the study of mammalian mtDNA. Here we review the use of the genetic manipulation in mammalian mtDNA, its difficulty and the main types of mutants accumulated in the past 30 years and the information derived from them. We also point out the need for a substantial improvement in this field in order to obtain new tools for functional genetic studies and for the generation of animal models of mtDNA-linked diseases.  相似文献

Glu-tRNA is either bound to elongation factor Tu to enter protein synthesis or is reduced by glutamyl-tRNA reductase (GluTR) in the first step of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis in most bacteria, archaea and in chloroplasts. Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, a bacterium that synthesizes a vast amount of heme, contains three genes encoding tRNA(Glu). All tRNA(Glu) species are substrates in vitro of GluRS1 from A. ferrooxidans.Glu-tRNA(3)(Glu), that fulfills the requirements for protein synthesis, is not substrate of GluTR. Therefore, aminoacylation of tRNA(3)(Glu) might contribute to ensure protein synthesis upon high heme demand by an uncoupling of protein and heme biosynthesis.  相似文献
