Fan worms (Sabellidae) possess paired modified prostomial structures at the base of the radiolar crown, dorso‐lateral to the mouth, called dorsal lips. The dorsal lips are involved in the sorting of particles collected by the radiolar crown. The range of variation in the morphology of dorsal lips is extensive, and probably this is not only due to adaptations to different environments and feeding preferences but also due to phylogenetic constraints. In this study, we describe and compare the morphology of dorsal lips in a range of sabellid taxa based on histological cross‐sections of these structures, and compare our data and terminology with those of previous studies. Dorsal lips are maintained erect in most taxa by a modified radiole fused to them known as dorsal radiolar appendage. We suggest that dorsal radiolar appendages with an internal supporting axis (cellular or acellular) and probably also the ventral lips are synapomorphies of the family. J. Travellers' malaria is an exciting topic. It is a field in flux with evolving options for chemoprophylaxis, self-diagnosis, self-treatment, risk/strategy analyses and surveillance. Ideologies vary and experts differ but debate is needed and can bring change. The launch of a new thematic series in the Malaria Journal -- " Travellers' malaria " -- creates an ideal forum to bring together research papers, reviews, opinion papers and commentaries, and will hopefully stimulate debate.  相似文献

We describe a case of retinoblastoma with an atypical presentation and previously unreported cytogenetic aberrations. A 19-month-old girl with left intraocular retinoblastoma was treated with enucleation and chemotherapy. The disease showed aggressive evolution within a short period between diagnosis and relapse. Eight months after diagnosis, a new large tumor was present in the orbit of the right eye, with diffuse bone pain, pancytopenia and diffuse infiltration into the bone marrow and the central nervous system. The child did not respond to treatment and died. Cytogenetic studies made with G-banding, FISH and SKY analysis showed chromosomal aberrations commonly associated with retinoblastoma, including del(13q), i(6p), +1, and monosomy 16, along with others that had not been reported previously, including dup(5q), dic(15;22) and add(14q). The new chromosomal aberrations may be related to the aggressiveness of the disease in this case.  相似文献

Sminthopsis is the most speciose genus of living dasyurid marsupials and, along with its close relatives Antechinomys and Ningaui, constitutes the clade Sminthopsini. Phylogenetic relationships among the 23 species in this clade have been the subject of much morphological and molecular investigation, including a recent integration of penis morphology (in Sminthopsis) with molecular systematics. Several phylogenetic issues remain open, however, including the monophyly of Sminthopsis and branching order among early sminthopsin lineages. In this study, we revisit sminthopsin systematics with an expanded molecular data set, including new DNA sequences from mitochondrial (valine transfer-RNA and 16S ribosomal RNA) and nuclear (interphotoreceptor retinoid binding protein and beta-fibrinogen) loci, along with previously published sequences of cytochrome b, 12S ribosomal RNA, control region, and protamine P1. Our results again fail to establish the monophyly of Sminthopsis, but do provide a clearer resolution of early sminthopsin branching. Specifically, our phylogeny suggests three major groups of Sminthopsis species: S. longicaudata (perhaps the sister of Antechinomys); the Macroura species group of previous authors (S. crassicaudata, S. macroura, S. virginiae, S. douglasi, and S. bindi); and the remaining 13 species allied with the Murina species group. Our results depart from previous molecular findings by reuniting S. ooldea with the Murina group, while resolving S. psammophila as sister to the hairy-footed dunnarts (S. hirtipes and S. youngsoni). We suggest that this conflict traces to anomalous phylogenetic signal in previously published cytochrome b sequences. Penis morphology maps reasonably well onto our phylogeny, requiring parallel origination of only one of the ten morphotypes described for Sminthopsis.  相似文献

The fig (Ficus L.) infructescence, called syconium, is a receptacle with an apical opening, the ostiole, closed by bracts. The ostiolar bracts produce an exudate, which is rather conspicuous in some species. It has not been histochemically analyzed yet, and the structures responsible for its production are still unknown. Some wild growing species of Ficus from Brazil produce high amounts of this ostiolar exudate. Ficus enormis (Mart. ex Miq.) Miq. grows as trees or shrubs in the Atlantic rainforest. Our goal was to identify the secretory structures present in the inflorescence and, to characterize histochemically the ostiolar tissues and exudates. Syconia samples of F. enormis were processed and stained according to the usual techniques in plant anatomy. The morphological analysis revealed different types of bracts, one type specialized in secretion, another showing transitional characteristics between secretory and non-secreting bracts, and a third one being non-secreting. They are designated as secretory ostiolar bracts, transitional bracts and wall bracts. The floral bracteoles, digital-shaped colleters present in the ostiole, at the syconium axis and at the flower receptacle, were also analyzed. All have similar structure, like finger-shaped secretory trichomes. The colleters present among ostiolar bracts may contribute to production and composition of the ostiole exudate.  相似文献
