Randomised controlled trial of enalapril and beta blockers in non-diabetic chronic renal failure.

OBJECTIVE--To compare the ability of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and beta blockers to slow the development of end stage renal failure in non-diabetic patients with chronic renal failure. DESIGN--Open randomised multicentre trial with three year follow up. SETTING--Outpatient departments of six French hospitals. PATIENTS--100 hypertensive patients with chronic renal failure (initial serum creatinine 200-400 mumol/l. 52 randomised to enalapril and 48 to beta blockers (conventional treatment). INTERVENTIONS--Enalapril or beta blocker was combined with frusemide and, if necessary, a calcium blocker or centrally acting drug in patients whose diastolic pressure remained above 90 mm Hg. RESULTS--17 patients receiving conventional treatment and 10 receiving enalapril developed end stage renal failure. The cumulative renal survival rate was significantly better in the enalapril group than in the conventional group (P < 0.05). The slope of the reciprocal serum creatinine concentration was steeper in the conventionally treated patients (-6.89 x 10(-5)l/mumol/month) than in the enalapril group (-4.17 x 10(-5)l/mumol/month; P < 0.05). No difference in blood pressure was found between groups. CONCLUSION--In hypertensive patients with chronic renal failure enalapril slows progression towards end stage renal failure compared with beta blockers. This effect was probably not mediated through controlling blood pressure.     

Chemical Communication in Necturus maculosus and his Cave-Living Relative Proteus anguinus (Proteidae,Urodela)

The chemical communication of the epigean Necturus maculosus and the cave-living Proteus anguinus are compared in laboratory conditions. In both species a specks-specific substance transferred by water could be shown, another was deposited on the substrate.     

Osteoconduction,Osteogenicity, Osteoinduction,what are the fundamental properties for a smart bone substitutes

Resorbable synthetic bone graft materials are mainly calcium phosphates. These materials differ in chemical composition and physical properties, particularly in regards of osteoconduction, osteogenic and/or osteoinductive properties. Several scaffolds are characterized and compared. Results from preclinical and clinical studies are selected. Osteoconductive properties have been largely described but “osteoinductive” properties have been less explored and documented. The purpose of this paper will be to present series of data demonstrating the differences in scaffolds for bone regeneration and to explain how dissolution and, biological precipitation into the micropores occur simultaneously with osteoid and bone formation after implantation in bony and non-bony sites and support the osteogenic/osteoinductive properties.     

Molecular Epidemiology of Carbapenem Non-Susceptible Acinetobacter baumannii in France

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii have emerged globally. The objective of this study was to investigate the epidemiology, clonal diversity and resistance mechanisms of imipenem non-susceptible A. baumannii isolates in France. Between December 2010 and August 2011, 132 notifications were collected, including 37 outbreaks corresponding to 242 cases (2 to 55 per cluster). Multilocus sequence typing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and characterisation of carbapenemase-encoding genes were performed on 110 non-repetitive isolates. Gene bla _OXA-23 was the most frequently detected (82%), followed by bla _OXA-24 (11%) and bla _OXA-58 (7%). Eleven sequence types (ST) were distinguished, among which sequence types ST1, ST2 (64%), ST20, ST25, ST85 and ST107. Isolates from epidemiological clusters had the same ST and resistance genes, indicating probable transmission within centres. In contrast, PFGE types of isolates differed among centres, arguing against transmission among centers. This study provides the first epidemiological snapshot of the population of A. baumannii with reduced susceptibility to carbapenems from France, and further underlines the predominance of international clones.     

Demonstration of non-histone nuclear proteins in mouse myeloma. Trial comparative study

The non-histone chromosomal proteins from mouse myeloma cell line X 63-Ag 8.653 have been studied using two dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Our results were compared to previous analysis of other myeloma cell lines.     

CELL CYCLE KINETICS IN AN IN VITRO TUMOR MODEL

Cell cycle kinetic parameters of multicell spheroids in vitro have been estimated using thymidine labeling techniques and autoradiography. Both the mitotic index and thymidine labeling index decreased in larger spheroids, whereas the duration of the cell cycle, as determined by two independent methods utilizing labeled mitoses or labeled cells, was essentially independent of spheroid size or age. These results suggest that the tumor-like growth exhibited by spheroids is the result of a decreasing growth fraction and a large apparent cell loss, rather than a general elongation of the cell cycle.
