Hypoxia, which occurs frequently in aquatic ecosystems and is mainly due to increasing eutrophication can cause severe environmental stress in fish. We investigated experimentally the hypothesis that hypoxia could be one of the environmental stress factors that can induce papillomatosis in fish. Male roach Rutilus rutilus exposed to periodic oxygen deficiency and accompanied temperature increases (OT group) showed the highest increase in the intensity of papillomatosis, as measured by the number of scales covered by papillomatosis tumors. The second highest increase in disease intensity was among male roach exposed to periodical temperature increases. The incidence of such tumors was lowest in the control group, which was exposed to neither hypoxia nor increased temperature. The mortality of fish during the 17 d experiment was highest and the condition factor was lowest in the OT group, indicating this group experienced a higher level of stress. The apparent interaction of hypoxia and temperature suggests that these environmental stressors are among the multifactorial elements leading to papillomatosis in roach. Furthermore, these results provide experimental evidence to indicate that hypoxia may contribute to tumor development in fish.  相似文献

Kinetic as well as energetic aspects of the thermal denaturation of Trichoderma reesei endo-1,4-beta-xylanase II (TRX II) and its three thermostable disulfide mutants were characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in different solution conditions. The calorimetric transitions were strongly scan-rate dependent, characteristic for an irreversible, kinetically controlled protein denaturation. The DSC-determined T*-values (the temperature at which the denaturation rate constant equals 1min(-1)), and the activation free energies for the transitions are consistent with the apparent transition temperatures of TRX II determined earlier by mass spectrometry. Protein aggregation, connected with the irreversibility of the transitions, was present in all cases but was less pronounced with the mutants as well as highly dependent on experimental conditions.  相似文献

Food chain models have dominated empirical studies of trophic interactions in the past decades, and have lead to important insights into the factors that control ecological communities. Despite the importance of food chain models in instigating ecological investigations, many empirical studies still show a strong deviation from the dynamics that food chain models predict. We present a theoretical framework that explains some of the discrepancies by showing that trophic interactions are likely to be strongly influenced by the spatial configuration of consumers and their resources. Differences in the spatial scale at which consumers and their resources function lead to uncoupling of the population dynamics of the interacting species, and may explain overexploitation and depletion of resource populations. We discuss how changed land use, likely the most prominent future stress on natural systems, may affect food web dynamics by interfering with the scale of interaction between consumers and their resource.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate whether the association between BMI and all‐cause mortality could be disentangled into opposite effects of body fat and fat‐free mass (FFM). Research Methods and Procedures: All‐cause mortality was studied in the Danish follow‐up study “Diet, Cancer and Health” with 27, 178 men and 29, 875 women 50 to 64 years old recruited from 1993 to 1997. By the end of year 2001, the median follow‐up was 5.8 years, and 1851 had died. Body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedance. Cox regression models were used to estimate the relationships among body fat mass index (body fat mass divided by height squared), FFM index (FFM divided by height squared), and mortality. All analyses were adjusted for smoking habits. Results: Men and women showed similar associations. J‐shaped associations were found between body fat mass index and mortality adjusted for FFM and smoking. The mortality rate ratios in the upper part of body fat mass were 1.12 per kg/m2 (95% confidence interval: 1.07, 1.18) in men and 1.06 per kg/m2 (95% confidence interval: 1.02, 1.10) in women. Reversed J‐shaped associations were found between FFM index and mortality with a tendency to level off for high values of FFM. Discussion: Our findings suggest that BMI represents joint but opposite associations of body fat and FFM with mortality. Both high body fat and low FFM are independent predictors of all‐cause mortality.  相似文献

We analysed the relationship between three life history characteristics (mobility, length of flight period and body size) and niche breadth (larval host plant specificity and adult habitat breadth), resource availability (distribution and abundance of host plants) and range position (distance between the northernmost distribution record and southernmost point of Finland) of the butterfly fauna of Finland. The data is based on literature and questionnaires. Often in across species studies phylogeny may create spurious relationships between life-history and ecological variables. We took the phylogenetic relatedness of butterfly species into account by analysing the data with phylogenetically independent contrasts (CAIC method). Butterfly mobility was positively related to the niche breadth, resource availability and range position. The length of the flight period was negatively related to the range position, indicating that the species at the northern edge of their distribution range have shorter flight period than species which are further way from the range edge. After controlling for the phylogenetic relatedness we found no significant correlations between body size and niche breadth, resource availability or range position. We suggest that the relationship between the length of the flight period and range position may arise as a consequence of lower hatching asynchrony in edge species as a result of lower environmental variance in larval growth conditions. Our results on the mobility suggest that there is selection pressure towards lower migration rate in species that have restricted niche breadth, low resource availability and in species that are on the northern edge of their geographical distribution range. In such species, selection against mobile individuals is likely to result from the decreased probability of finding another habitat patch suitable for egg laying.  相似文献

Ni2+-binding staphylococci were generated through surface display of combinatorially engineered variants of a fungal cellulose-binding domain (CBD) from Trichoderma reesei cellulase Cel7A. Novel CBD variants were generated by combinatorial protein engineering through the randomization of 11 amino acid positions, and eight potentially Ni2+-binding CBDs were selected by phage display technology. These new variants were subsequently genetically introduced into chimeric surface proteins for surface display on Staphylococcus carnosus cells. The expressed chimeric proteins were shown to be properly targeted to the cell wall of S. carnosus cells, since full-length proteins could be extracted and affinity purified. Surface accessibility for the chimeric proteins was demonstrated, and furthermore, the engineered CBDs, now devoid of cellulose-binding capacity, were shown to be functional with regard to metal binding, since the recombinant staphylococci had gained Ni2+-binding capacity. Potential environmental applications for such tailor-made metal-binding bacteria as bioadsorbents in biofilters or biosensors are discussed.  相似文献

Surface Binding of Aflatoxin B1 by Lactic Acid Bacteria   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6       下载免费PDF全文
Specific lactic acid bacterial strains remove toxins from liquid media by physical binding. The stability of the aflatoxin B1 complexes formed with 12 bacterial strains in both viable and nonviable (heat- or acid-treated) forms was assessed by repetitive aqueous extraction. By the fifth extraction, up to 71% of the total aflatoxin B1 remained bound. Nonviable bacteria retained the highest amount of aflatoxin B1. Lactobacillus rhamnosus strain GG (ATCC 53103) and L. rhamnosus strain LC-705 (DSM 7061) removed aflatoxin B1 from solution most efficiently and were selected for further study. The accessibility of bound aflatoxin B1 to an antibody in an indirect competitive inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay suggests that surface components of these bacteria are involved in binding. Further evidence is the recovery of around 90% of the bound aflatoxin from the bacteria by solvent extraction. Autoclaving and sonication did not release any detectable aflatoxin B1. Variation in temperature (4 to 37°C) and pH (2 to 10) did not have any significant effect on the amount of aflatoxin B1 released. Binding of aflatoxin B1 appears to be predominantly extracellular for viable and heat-treated bacteria. Acid treatment may permit intracellular binding. In all cases, binding is of a reversible nature, but the stability of the complexes formed depends on strain, treatment, and environmental conditions.  相似文献

Sexual selection has traditionally been divided into competitionover mates and mate choice. Currently, models of sexual selectionpredict that sexual traits are expressed in proportion to thecondition of their bearer. In horned beetles, male contestcompetition is well established, but studies on female preferencesare scarce. Here I present data on male mating success and condition dependence of courtship rate in three species of horn-dimorphicdung beetles, Onthophagus taurus, Onthophagus binodis, andOnthophagus australis. I found that in the absence of malecontest competition, mating success of O. taurus and O. australiswas unrelated to their horn length and body size, whereas inO. binodis horn size had a negative effect but body size hada positive effect on male mating success. Overall, in O. binodismajor morph males had greater mating success than minor morphmales. In all three species male mating success was affectedby courtship rate, and the courtship rate was condition dependent such that when males were manipulated to be in poor conditionthey had lower courtship rates than males that were manipulatedto be in good condition. My findings provide new insight intothe mating systems of horned dung beetles and support an importantassumption in indicator models of sexual selection.  相似文献
