Biological invasions by large herbivores involve the establishment of novel interactions with the receiving mammalian carnivore community, but understanding these interactions is difficult due to the large spatiotemporal scales at which such dynamics would occur. We quantified the functional responses of a native apex predator (the dingo (Canis familiaris), which includes wild dogs and their hybrids) and a non‐native mesopredator (red fox; Vulpes vulpes) to an invading non‐native ungulate (sambar deer; Cervus unicolor) in Australia. We predicted that the apex predator would exhibit a stronger functional response to increasing sambar deer abundance than the mesopredator. We used a state–space model to link two 30‐year time series: (i) sambar deer abundance (hunter catch‐per‐unit‐effort); and (ii) percentages of sambar deer in dingo (= 4531) and fox (= 5002) scats. Sambar deer abundance increased over fourfold during 1984?2013. The percentages of sambar deer in dingo and fox scats increased during this 30‐year period, from nil in both species in 1984 to 8.2% in dingoes and 0.5% in foxes in 2013. Dingoes exhibited a much stronger functional response to increasing sambar deer abundance than foxes. The prediction that invading deer would be utilized more by the apex predator than by the mesopredator was therefore supported. The increasing abundance of sambar deer during the period 1984?2013 provided an increasingly important food source for dingoes. In contrast, the smaller red fox utilized sambar deer much less. Our study demonstrates that prey enrichment can be an important consequence of large herbivore invasions and that the effect varies predictably with the trophic position of the mammalian carnivores in the receiving community.  相似文献

Intravenous amitraz caused significant hypotension and bradycardia in pentobarbitone anaesthetized guinea-pigs. Depression of blood pressure reached a plateau with a dose of 10 mg/kg but heart rate continued to fall in a dose-dependent manner, up to a fall of 90 beats per minute after a total of 160 mg/kg/min. Amitraz was then tested on spontaneously beating guinea-pig isolated atria. The maximum bath concentration approximated a blood concentration produced by 5 mg/kg amitraz in the guinea-pig (2.3 X 10(-4) M). Amitraz did not significantly shift the dose-response curve to isoprenaline or acetylcholine but antagonized histamine rate responses competitively in the presence of propranolol (2 X 10(-6) M). Propranolol unmasked a dose-dependent depressant effect of amitraz on atrial rate, an effect abolished with atropine (1 X 10(-5) M). Amitraz increased atrial force of contraction, an effect which was not seen when propranolol was present in the bath solution. Amitraz also depressed atrial rate directly, but this effect was minor in comparison to bradycardia seen in the guinea-pig. It is likely that the cardiovascular depression seen in the guinea-pig following amitraz i.v. is caused by an alteration in autonomic drive rather than a significant direct cardiac effect.  相似文献

The controversial role of extracellular Ca2+ in toxicity to in vitro hepatocyte systems is reviewed. Recent reports demonstrate that extracellular Ca2+-related cytotoxicity is dependent on Ca2+-influenced vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) content of isolated hepatocytes. Based on a Ca2+-omission model of in vitro oxidative stress, the role of vitamin E in cytotoxicity is further explored. This model demonstrates the interdependence of the GSH redox system and vitamin E as protective agents during oxidative stress. Following chemical oxidant-induced depletion of intracellular GSH, cell morphology and viability are maintained by the continuous presence of cellular alpha-tocopherol above a threshold level of 0.6-1.0 nmol/10(6) cells. alpha-Tocopherol threshold-dependent cell viability is directly correlated with the prevention of the loss of cellular protein thiols in the absence of intracellular GSH. Potential mechanisms for this phenomenon are explored and include a direct reductive action of alpha-tocopherol on protein thiyl radicals, and the prevention of oxidation of protein thiols by scavenging of lipid peroxyl radicals by alpha-tocopherol. It is suggested that in light of the threshold phenomenon of vitamin E prevention of potentially severe oxidative stress-induced cytotoxicity, its use as a protective agent against an oxidative challenge in vivo should be reassessed.  相似文献

Background

Despite a recent decline, Zimbabwe still has the fifth highest adult HIV prevalence in the world at 14.7%; 56% of the population are currently living in extreme poverty.

Design

Cross-sectional population-based survey of 18–22 year olds, conducted in 30 communities in south-eastern Zimbabwe in 2007.

Objective

To examine whether the risk of HIV infection among young rural Zimbabwean women is associated with socio-economic position and whether different socio-economic domains, including food sufficiency, might be associated with HIV risk in different ways.

Methods

Eligible participants completed a structured questionnaire and provided a finger-prick blood sample tested for antibodies to HIV and HSV-2. The relationship between poverty and HIV was explored for three socio-economic domains: ability to afford essential items; asset wealth; food sufficiency. Analyses were performed to examine whether these domains were associated with HIV infection or risk factors for infection among young women, and to explore which factors might mediate the relationship between poverty and HIV.

Results

2593 eligible females participated in the survey and were included in the analyses. Overall HIV prevalence among these young females was 7.7% (95% CI: 6.7–8.7); HSV-2 prevalence was 11.2% (95% CI: 9.9–12.4). Lower socio-economic position was associated with lower educational attainment, earlier marriage, increased risk of depression and anxiety disorders and increased reporting of higher risk sexual behaviours such as earlier sexual debut, more and older sexual partners and transactional sex. Young women reporting insufficient food were at increased risk of HIV infection and HSV-2.

Conclusions

This study provides evidence from Zimbabwe that among young poor women, economic need and food insufficiency are associated with the adoption of unsafe behaviours. Targeted structural interventions that aim to tackle social and economic constraints including insufficient food should be developed and evaluated alongside behaviour and biomedical interventions, as a component of HIV prevention programming and policy.  相似文献

Bacterial species comprise related genotypes that can display divergent phenotypes with important clinical implications. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a common cause of nosocomial infections and, critical to its pathogenesis, is its ability to adhere and form biofilms on surfaces, thereby moderating the effect of the host’s immune response and antibiotics. Commensal S. epidermidis populations are thought to differ from those associated with disease in factors involved in adhesion and biofilm accumulation. We quantified the differences in biofilm formation in 98 S. epidermidis isolates from various sources, and investigated population structure based on ribosomal multilocus typing (rMLST) and the presence/absence of genes involved in adhesion and biofilm formation. All isolates were able to adhere and form biofilms in in vitro growth assays and confocal microscopy allowed classification into 5 biofilm morphotypes based on their thickness, biovolume and roughness. Phylogenetic reconstruction grouped isolates into three separate clades, with the isolates in the main disease associated clade displaying diversity in morphotype. Of the biofilm morphology characteristics, only biofilm thickness had a significant association with clade distribution. The distribution of some known adhesion-associated genes (aap and sesE) among isolates showed a significant association with the species clonal frame. These data challenge the assumption that biofilm-associated genes, such as those on the ica operon, are genetic markers for less invasive S. epidermidis isolates, and suggest that phenotypic characteristics, such as adhesion and biofilm formation, are not fixed by clonal descent but are influenced by the presence of various genes that are mobile among lineages.  相似文献

The use of antimicrobials in human and veterinary medicine has coincided with a rise in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the food-borne pathogens Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. Faecal contamination from the main reservoir hosts (livestock, especially poultry) is the principal route of human infection but little is known about the spread of AMR among source and sink populations. In particular, questions remain about how Campylobacter resistomes interact between species and hosts, and the potential role of sewage as a conduit for the spread of AMR. Here, we investigate the genomic variation associated with AMR in 168 C. jejuni and 92 C. coli strains isolated from humans, livestock and urban effluents in Spain. AMR was tested in vitro and isolate genomes were sequenced and screened for putative AMR genes and alleles. Genes associated with resistance to multiple drug classes were observed in both species and were commonly present in multidrug-resistant genomic islands (GIs), often located on plasmids or mobile elements. In many cases, these loci had alleles that were shared among C. jejuni and C. coli consistent with horizontal transfer. Our results suggest that specific antibiotic resistance genes have spread among Campylobacter isolated from humans, animals and the environment.  相似文献
