In 2006, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) completed its first Bioterrorism Risk Assessment (BTRA), intended to be the foundation for DHS's subsequent biennial risk assessments mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 10 (HSPD-10). At the request of DHS, the National Research Council established the Committee on Methodological Improvements to the Department of Homeland Security's Biological Agent Risk Analysis to provide an independent, scientific peer review of the BTRA. The Committee found a number of shortcomings in the BTRA, including a failure to consider terrorists as intelligent adversaries in their models, unnecessary complexity in threat and consequence modeling and simulations, and a lack of focus on risk management. The Committee unanimously concluded that an improved BTRA is needed to provide a more credible foundation for risk-informed decision making. 相似文献

We analyzed data from 373 fresh nest-sites (containing 2435 nests) of lowland gorillas (Gorilla g. gorilla)during a 4-year period in the Lopé Reserve, Gabon, to determine whether the observed variability in nest building was due
to environmental influences. We recognized and defined seven types of nest in terms of the degree of construction and the
raw materials used. Overall, nests built on the ground from herbaceous plants are the most common type (40%), followed by
tree nests (35%). Frequencies of the different nest-types vary significantly between eight habitat-types. In habitat-types
with high densities of understory herbs, ground nests predominated, but when herbs were rare, the majority of nests were in
trees. A general preference for sleeping in herbaceous ground nests is indicated since trees are abundant in all habitat-types,
except savanna. The frequency of nesting in trees shows a significant positive correlation with rainfall, but effects of climate
are confounded by seasonal variation in use of different habitat-types. When elephants were attracted to the same localized
food sources as gorillas, many tree nests were built even when herbs were available. We conclude that different nest-types
reflect a variety of solutions to maximize comfort, depending on available raw materials and the probability of rainfall or
disturbance by elephants or both factors. Nests are a powerful tool for population censuses and demographic studies of great
apes, but problems exist in interpreting data on lowland gorilla nests. Results from this analysis show that only a third
of nest-sites accurately reflects group size (of weaned individuals) and that 26% of all gorilla nest-sites could be mistaken
for those of chimpanzees, as all nests, or all those visible from a transect, were in trees. Gorilla nests at Lopé were nonrandomly
distributed with respect to habitat-types, and nest construction varied seasonally, thereby introducing sources of bias to
transect nest counts. We discuss these problems and ones related to assessing the decay rate of nest-sites and make recommendations

Aims To produce representative aggregate maps of plant collection locations in Thailand and discuss their impact on biogeographical studies in Thailand and the surrounding region. Location Thailand. Methods A representative data set comprising 6593 plant specimen records for Thailand has been assembled. The data set contains ± all known collections for fifteen representative plant families and further records for another 104. All records are localized to Changwat (province), 6441 to at least quarter degree square. Results Analysis shows that the spread of collecting activity in Thailand is markedly uneven; 20% of collections come from a single Changwat (Chiang Mai) and 53% of Changwat have fifty or fewer collections. The distribution of collections by Changwat and by quarter degree square is erratic with most squares and Changwat having few collections, both in proportionate and absolute terms. Some of the most densely forested Changwats and squares appear undercollected. Distribution maps for common, easily recognized tree species in the genus Syzygium show distributional gaps. Conclusions Thailand is defined as an undercollected country. Even within the few well‐collected quarter degree squares the spread of collecting is still poor; almost all collections being localized to one of three mountain ranges or their foothills. There are many gaps in collecting activity which make impossible a straightforward interpretation of biogeographical pattern. It is argued that targeted collecting activity is needed, that assembly of this type of data set is therefore essential and that our data set and its interpretation is a model for all countries in the region. 相似文献

Life-history traits and ecological conditions have an important influence on primate social systems. Most of what we know about the life-history patterns and social structure of gorillas comes from studies of eastern gorillas (Gorilla beringei sp.), which live under dramatically different ecological conditions compared to western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla sp.). In this paper we present new data on western gorilla social structure and life histories from four study sites, and make comparisons with eastern gorilla populations. Data were obtained from two study sites with gorilla groups undergoing the habituation process (Lossi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Bai Hokou, Central African Republic) and two bai studies (Maya Nord and Mbeli Bai, Republic of Congo). The size and structure of these groups were similar to those seen in eastern gorillas. However, differences in the occurrence of various group transitions (group formations, changes between one-male and multimale composition, and group disintegrations) exist, and western gorillas notably exhibit much higher rates of male emigration and correspondingly fewer multimale groups compared to mountain gorillas. Certain phenomena have been observed only rarely, including predation by leopards. The preliminary data show no significant differences in birth rates between western gorillas and mountain gorillas. The ecological variability across gorilla habitats likely explains the flexibility in the social system of gorillas, but we need more information on the social relationships and ecology of western gorillas to elucidate the causes for the similarities and differences between western and eastern gorillas on the levels of individuals, social groups, and population dynamics. 相似文献

A murine antibody FvCys fragment with a single additional cysteine residue at the C terminus of the VH domain was expressed in Escherichia coli from a modified expression plasmid containing the structural genes for the VH and VL domains derived from the anti-lysozyme hybridoma D1.3. Chemical cross-linking between the introduced sulfhydryl groups of two FvCys fragments by means of bis-maleimidohexane was used to generate a bisFvCys conjugate. The stability of the bisFvCys conjugate and an FvCys analogue that had been reacted with N-ethyl-maleimide to block the free sulfhydryl group, FvCys(BL), were compared after 125I-labeling. The bisFvCys conjugate was completely stable to incubation in solution at 37 degrees C for 24 h whereas only 60% of the FvCys(BL) fragment remained soluble. After i.v. administration to normal Wistar rats, both Fv proteins were rapidly cleared from the circulation with biphasic kinetics that were best fitted to a two-compartment open pharmacokinetic model. The alpha-phase half-life of the bisFvCys conjugate, 0.32 h, was significantly longer than that of the FvCys(BL) fragment, 0.15 h (p less than 0.001) whereas there was no significant difference between the beta-phase half-lives, 1.4 to 1.6h. No chain cleavage or covalent attachment to serum protein was detected by SDS-PAGE analysis of serum samples.
