Previous work on cotton flower pigments is outlined. The major flavonoids are glycosides of gossypetin, quercetin, and kampferol. Twelve flavonol glycosides have been tentatively isolated and identified, while a number of minor components remain unidentified. The gossypetin glycosides are gossypin, gossypitrin and a C7-linked glycoside of unknown sugar residue. The quercetin glycosides include isoquercitrin, rutin, a third C3-linked glycoside with unknown sugar residue, quercimeritrin and a second C7-linked glycoside with sugar residue unknown. The kampferol glycosides include trifolin, kampferol rutinoside and 2 other C3-linked glycosides with unknown sugar residues. The major anthocyanin throughout the genus is cyanidin. Mutants which affect visible flower color were studied in 3 species (G. arboreum, G. hirsutum, and G. barbadense). The majority of these mutants act to decrease or prevent the synthesis of gossypetin glycosides. The only exceptions to this are the mutants at the Ya locus in G. arboreum, which affect all of the C7-linked glycosides in one case, and in the other reduce over-all flavonol production. In all instances, the species could be positively identified by the residual array of pigments not affected by the mutant alleles concerned; i.e., visual similarity of phenotypes did not obscure the basic pattern of pigmentation characteristic of the different species.  相似文献

Type I topoisomerases (EC 5.99.1.2) are those enzymes capable of relaxing negatively supercoiled DNA without the need for ATP. The central role played by these enzymes in cell function suggests that the structure of type I topoisomerases may be highly conserved in eukaryotic cells. However, the extent of the conservation among eukaryotes is unknown. Human DNA topoisomerase I is an autoimmune antigen (Scl-70) of scleroderma patients. We have found that the autoimmune antibodies in human Scl-70 sera recognize protein from various plants, and these proteins display DNA relaxation function. In addition, Scl-70 antibodies were able to inhibit enzymatic activity of plant topoisomerase I. Therefore, the immunological cross-reactivity of the plant topoisomerase with human antibodies demonstrates that, despite divergence of eukaryotic organisms, these plant and animal enzymes retain structurally similar enzymatic features.  相似文献

Summary The value of iron ore is adversely affected by phosphorus in concentrations over 0.03% by weight. The present research concerns the use of metabolic products of aPenicillium-like fungus to leach insoluble phosphates (hydroxyapatite) from ores. Ion chromatography was used to measure metabolism of glucose into acidic fragments. The rate and products of glucose degradation depended on both the chemical composition of the growth medium (buffered or not) and incubation conditions (shaken or quiescent). The principal products were identified as oxalic acid and isomers of propylene dicarboxylic acid, mainly itaconic acid. Continued, slow metabolism of itaconic acid generates more oxalic acid. Aliphatic acids were not detected. Both iron ore phosphate and calcium phosphate were partially solubilized by either the spent broth or aqueous oxalic acid. Solubilization of ore phosphorus was greatly assisted by hydrochloric acid added to the spent broth in small increments. The data suggest biological alternatives to costly leaching procedures that use only mineral acids.  相似文献

Humans and non‐human mammals exhibit fundamentally similar vocal responses to increased noise, including increases in vocalization amplitude (the Lombard effect) and changes to spectral and temporal properties of vocalizations. Different research focuses have resulted in significant discrepancies in study methodologies and hypotheses among fields, leading to particular knowledge gaps and techniques specific to each field. This review compares and contrasts noise‐induced vocal modifications observed from human and non‐human mammals with reference to experimental design and the history of each field. Topics include the effects of communication motivation and subject‐specific characteristics on the acoustic parameters of vocalizations, examination of evidence for a proposed biomechanical linkage between the Lombard effect and other spectral and temporal modifications, and effects of noise on self‐communication signals (echolocation). Standardized terminology, cross‐taxa tests of hypotheses, and open areas for future research in each field are recommended. Findings indicate that more research is needed to evaluate linkages among vocal modifications, context dependencies, and the finer details of the Lombard effect during natural communication. Studies of non‐human mammals could benefit from applying the tightly controlled experimental designs developed in human research, while studies of human speech in noise should be expanded to include natural communicative contexts. The effects of experimental design and behavioural context on vocalizations should not be neglected as they may impact the magnitude and type of noise‐induced vocal modifications.  相似文献

BackgroundAs the global climate changes in response to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, weather and temperature are expected to become increasingly variable. Although heat sensitivity is a recognized clinical feature of multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system, few studies have examined the implications of climate change for patients with this disease.Methods and findingsWe conducted a retrospective cohort study of individuals with MS ages 18–64 years in a nationwide United States patient-level commercial and Medicare Advantage claims database from 2003 to 2017. We defined anomalously warm weather as any month in which local average temperatures exceeded the long-term average by ≥1.5°C. We estimated the association between anomalously warm weather and MS-related inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department visits using generalized log-linear models. From 75,395,334 individuals, we identified 106,225 with MS. The majority were women (76.6%) aged 36–55 years (59.0%). Anomalously warm weather was associated with increased risk for emergency department visits (risk ratio [RR] = 1.043, 95% CI: 1.025–1.063) and inpatient visits (RR = 1.032, 95% CI: 1.010–1.054). There was limited evidence of an association between anomalously warm weather and MS-related outpatient visits (RR = 1.010, 95% CI: 1.005–1.015). Estimates were similar for men and women, strongest among older individuals, and exhibited substantial variation by season, region, and climate zone. Limitations of the present study include the absence of key individual-level measures of socioeconomic position (i.e., race/ethnicity, occupational status, and housing quality) that may determine where individuals live—and therefore the extent of their exposure to anomalously warm weather—as well as their propensity to seek treatment for neurologic symptoms.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that as global temperatures rise, individuals with MS may represent a particularly susceptible subpopulation, a finding with implications for both healthcare providers and systems.  相似文献
