Financial stress is widely believed to cause health problems. However, policies seeking to relieve financial stress by limiting debt levels of poor households may directly worsen their economic well-being. We evaluate an alternative policy – increasing the repayment flexibility of debt contracts. A field experiment randomly assigned microfinance clients to a monthly or a traditional weekly installment schedule (N = 200). We used cell phones to gather survey data on income, expenditure, and financial stress every 48 hours over seven weeks. Clients repaying monthly were 51 percent less likely to report feeling “worried, tense, or anxious” about repaying, were 54 percent more likely to report feeling confident about repaying, and reported spending less time thinking about their loan compared to weekly clients. Monthly clients also reported higher business investment and income, suggesting that the flexibility encouraged them to invest their loans more profitably, which ultimately reduced financial stress.  相似文献

Most of eukaryotic genes are interrupted by introns that need to be removed from pre-mRNAs before they can perform their function. This is done by complex machinery called spliceosome. Many eukaryotes possess two separate spliceosomal systems that process separate sets of introns. The major (U2) spliceosome removes majority of introns, while minute fraction of intron repertoire is processed by the minor (U12) spliceosome. These two populations of introns are called U2-type and U12-type, respectively. The latter fall into two subtypes based on the terminal dinucleotides. The minor spliceosomal system has been lost independently in some lineages, while in some others few U12-type introns persist. We investigated twenty insect genomes in order to better understand the evolutionary dynamics of U12-type introns. Our work confirms dramatic drop of U12-type introns in Diptera, leaving these genomes just with a handful cases. This is mostly the result of intron deletion, but in a number of dipteral cases, minor type introns were switched to a major type, as well. Insect genes that harbor U12-type introns belong to several functional categories among which proteins binding ions and nucleic acids are enriched and these few categories are also overrepresented among these genes that preserved minor type introns in Diptera.  相似文献

Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal species, a "Symbiotic" relationship between tress and fungi in forest has a great ecological and economic importance. Here is an attempt to describe database named "EctomycorrhizalDB", addressing ECM diversity of Central Himalaya (Kumaun region), with special emphasis on their characterization, physical properties and morphological features along with specifications. This database would help the scientific community to draw a better understanding of the environmental factors that affects species diversity. Interval mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for 16 yield, agronomic and quality traits in potato was performed on a tetraploid full-sib family comprising 227 clones from a cross between processing clone 12601ab1 and table cultivar Stirling. Thirty-eight AFLP primer combinations and six SSRs provided 514 informative markers which formed a molecular marker map comprising 12 linkage groups (LGs) in 12601ab1 (nine with four homologous chromosomes) which were aligned with 12 in Stirling (11 with four homologous chromosomes), with four partial groups remaining in 12601ab1. Two LGs were identified unequivocally as chromosomes IV and V and eight others were tentatively assigned with chromosomes VII and X unidentified. All of the traits scored had moderately high heritabilities with 54–92% of the variation in clone means over 3 years and two replicates being due to genetic differences. A total of 39 QTLs were identified. A QTL for maturity was identified on chromosome V which explained 56% of the phenotypic variance, whereas the other QTLs individually explained between 5.4 and 16.5%. However, six QTLs were detected for after-cooking blackening and four for each of regularity of tuber shape, fry colour both after storage at 4 and 10°C and sprouting. Just two QTLs were found for each of yield, the two ‘overall’ scores, crop emergence, tuber size and common scab and just one QTL was detected for each of dry matter content, keeping quality, growth cracks and internal condition. The implications for practical potato breeding and for practical linkage and QTL analysis in autotetraploids are discussed.  相似文献

We have analyzed 7,137 samples from 125 different caste, tribal and religious groups of India and 99 samples from three populations of Nepal for the length variation in the COII/tRNA(Lys) region of mtDNA. Samples showing length variation were subjected to detailed phylogenetic analysis based on HVS-I and informative coding region sequence variation. The overall frequencies of the 9-bp deletion and insertion variants in South Asia were 1.9 and 0.6%, respectively. We have also defined a novel deep-rooting haplogroup M43 and identified the rare haplogroup H14 in Indian populations carrying the 9-bp deletion by complete mtDNA sequencing. Moreover, we redefined haplogroup M6 and dissected it into two well-defined subclades. The presence of haplogroups F1 and B5a in Uttar Pradesh suggests minor maternal contribution from Southeast Asia to Northern India. The occurrence of haplogroup F1 in the Nepalese sample implies that Nepal might have served as a bridge for the flow of eastern lineages to India. The presence of R6 in the Nepalese, on the other hand, suggests that the gene flow between India and Nepal has been reciprocal.  相似文献

The cysteine residues of the gamma crystallins, a family of ocular lens proteins, are involved in the aggregation and phase separation of these proteins. Both these phenomena are implicated in cataract formation. We have used bovine gammaB crystallin as a model system to study the role of the individual cysteine residues in the aggregation and phase separation of the gamma crystallins. Here, we compare the thermodynamic and kinetic behavior of the recombinant wild-type protein (WT) and the Cys18 to Ser (C18S) mutant. We find that the solubilities of the two proteins are similar. The kinetics of crystallization, however, are different. The WT crystallizes slowly enough for the metastable liquid-liquid coexistence to be easily observed. C18S, on the other hand, crystallizes rapidly; the metastable coexisting liquid phases of the pure mutant do not form. Nevertheless, the coexistence curve of C18S can be determined provided that crystallization is kinetically suppressed. In this way we found that the coexistence curve coincides with that of the WT. Despite the difference in the kinetics of crystallization, the two proteins were found to have the same crystal forms and almost identical X-ray structures. Our results demonstrate that even conservative point mutations can bring about dramatic changes in the kinetics of crystallization. The implications of our findings for cataract formation and protein crystallization are discussed.  相似文献

We have shown mouse to be an useful animal model for studies on the estrogen-mediated synthesis and secretion of lipoproteins since, unlike in rats, low density lipoprotein receptors are not upregulated in mice [3]. This results into the elevation of plasma levels of apolipoprotein (apo) B and apoE, and lowering of apoA-I-containing particles. The mechanisms of apoB and apoE elevation by estrogen have been elucidated [6], but the mechanism of lowering of plasma levels of HDL is still not known. Among other factors, apoA-I, cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP), scavenger receptor B1 (SR-B1), and hepatic lipase are potential candidates that modulate plasma levels of HDL. Since estrogen treatment increased hepatic apoA-I mRNA and apoA-I synthesis, and mouse express undetectable levels of CETP, we tested the hypothesis that estradiol-mediated lowering of HDL in mice may occur through modulation of hepatic lipase (HL). Four mouse strains (C57L, C57BL, BALB, C3H) were administered supraphysiological doses of estradiol, and plasma levels of HDL as well as HL mRNA were quantitated. In all 4 strains estradiol decreased plasma levels of HDL by 30%, and increased HL mRNA 2–3 fold. In a separate experiment groups of male C57BL mouse were castrated or sham-operated, and low and high doses of estradiol administered. We found 1.4–2.5 fold elevation of HL mRNA with concomitant lowering of HDL levels. Ten other mouse strains examined also showed estradiol-induced elevation of HL mRNA, but the extent of elevation was found to be strain-specific. Based on these studies, we conclude that hepatic lipase is an important determinant of plasma levels of HDL and that HL mRNA is modulated by estrogen which in turn may participate in the lowering of plasma levels of HDL.  相似文献

The coexistence of many species within ecological communities poses a long‐standing theoretical puzzle. Modern coexistence theory (MCT) and related techniques explore this phenomenon by examining the chance of a species population growing from rarity in the presence of all other species. The mean growth rate when rare, , is used in MCT as a metric that measures persistence properties (like invasibility or time to extinction) of a population. Here we critique this reliance on and show that it fails to capture the effect of temporal random abundance variations on persistence properties. The problem becomes particularly severe when an increase in the amplitude of stochastic temporal environmental variations leads to an increase in , since at the same time it enhances random abundance fluctuations and the two effects are inherently intertwined. In this case, the chance of invasion and the mean extinction time of a population may even go down as increases.  相似文献
