Dynamics of compensation for the deprivations of segregation and discrimination, and the support of multiculturalism derived from ethnic cohesion explain the consumption of out-of-home highbrow leisure events by minority/ethnic individuals, immigrants, and their descendants as efforts toward their integration and assimilation in metropolitan areas. Using data from the Houston Area Survey, I examine whether there are any significant ethnic disparities in the attendance at museums and live theatres, which represent a relevant dimension of out-of-home highbrow leisure in Houston. I found that the odds of frequently attending museums and live theatres are lower for Anglos compared with non-Anglos, and higher for US-born individuals with at least one foreign parent compared with US-born individuals with US-born parents. These findings reveal that the audiences of museums and live theatres in Houston are already characterized by a noteworthy ethnic diversity.  相似文献

Prior studies have implicated an involvement of the Msx1 homeobox gene in cleft palate in mice and its homolog in humans (called MSX1 in the HOX7 gene, located on chromosome 4). In this study we present evidence of a sex-dependent association between MSX1 and non-syndromic cleft lip/palate (NSCLP) in the Chilean population. The sample included 73 NSCLP cases, 37 from multiplex families (Mx), 36 from simplex families (Sx), and 87 controls. Polymerase chain reaction amplification of the MSX1 intragenic microsatellite (CA)n-sequence shows significant (p = 0.035) differences in the allele frequencies between NSCLP-Mx males and control males. These differences are mainly due to frequency differences in allele *2 (173 base pairs) among cases (21.9%) and controls (13.2%). When the NSCLP cases are subdivided by sex and positive family history (Mx versus Sx), the Mx males (27.8%) as well as the total NSCLP-Mx cases (25.7%) showed significantly higher frequencies of allele *2, compared to controls (11.4% and 13.2%, respectively). Analysis of the genotype data indicates that the relative risk for NSCLP is greater for persons carrying allele *2 (i.e., odds ratio [OR] larger than 1), reaching significance for all Mx cases (OR = 2.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10 to 6.52) and even more pronounced for Mx males (OR = 3.33; 95% CI, 1.08 to 10.32). Taken together, these findings support the hypothesis that the genetic variation at the MSX1 locus is a predisposing gene involved in sex-dependent susceptibility to clefting and that it also differentiates simplex from multiplex families.  相似文献

Although alphaviruses have been extensively studied as model systems for the structural organization of enveloped viruses, no structures exist for the phylogenetically distinct eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE)-Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) lineage of New World alphaviruses. Here we report the 25-A structure of VEE virus, obtained from electron cryomicroscopy and image reconstruction. The envelope spike glycoproteins of VEE virus have a T=4 icosahedral arrangement, similar to that observed in Old World Sindbis, Semliki Forest, and Ross River alphaviruses. However, VEE virus has pronounced differences in its nucleocapsid structure relative to nucleocapsid structures repeatedly observed in Old World alphaviruses.  相似文献

In addition to known protein-coding genes, large amounts of apparently non-coding sequence are conserved between the human and mouse genomes. Antithrombin (AT) circulates in two isoforms, alpha- (90-95%) and beta-AT (5-10%). AT inhibits clotting factors such as thrombin and factor Xa, a reaction catalyzed by heparin. Heparin has been used in many clinical situations but suffers from limitations such as a short intravenous half-life, bleeding risk, and the inability to inhibit thrombin bound to fibrin clots. In order to overcome some of heparin's limitations, we prepared a covalent AT-heparin complex (ATH) that has increased intravenous half-life, reduced bleeding risk, and can directly inhibit clot-bound thrombin. However, structural analysis is required to further develop this promising antithrombotic agent. It was found that the proportion of isoforms in ATH (55% alpha-AT, and 45% beta-AT) was significantly different than that in the commercial AT starting material (80% alpha-AT and 20% beta-AT). Further analysis of the rate of heparin-catalyzed inhibition of thrombin by AT isoforms prepared from ATH revealed that the beta-variant reacted approximately 2-fold faster.  相似文献

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) and noradrenaline (NA) are co-transmitters at many sympathetic synapses, but it is not yet clear if their release is independently regulated. To address this question, we quantified the electrically evoked release of these co-transmitters from perivascular nerve terminals to the mesenteric circulation in control and drug-treated rats. 6-Hydroxydopamine reduced the tissue content and the electrically evoked release of ir-NPY and NA as well as the rise in perfusion pressure. A 0.001 mg/kg reserpine reduced the content of ir-NPY and NA, but did not modify their release nor altered the rise in perfusion pressure elicited by the electrical stimuli. However, 0.1mg/kg reserpine reduced both the content and release of NA but decreased only the content but not the release of ir-NPY; the rise in perfusion pressure was halved. Clonidine did not affect the release of ir-NPY while it lowered the outflow of NA, not altering the rise in perfusion pressure elicited by the electrical stimuli. Yohimbine, did not modify the release of ir-NPY but increased the NA outflow, it antagonized the clonidine effect. Therefore, presynaptic alpha2-adrenoceptors modulate the release of NA but not NPY, implying separate regulatory mechanisms.  相似文献

The formulation of the culture medium for a Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line has been investigated in terms of the simultaneous replacement of glucose and glutamine, the most commonly employed carbon and nitrogen sources, pursuing the objective of achieving a more efficient use of these compounds, simultaneously avoiding the accumulation of lactate and ammonium in the medium. The key factor in this process is the selection of compounds that are slowly metabolized. Among the different compounds studied, galactose and glutamate provide the best results, allowing support of cell growth with an optimal balance between nutrient uptake and cell requirements and the generation of minimal quantities of lactate and ammonium. The attained results also highlight the capacity of the cells to redistribute their metabolism as a response to the changes in medium composition.  相似文献
