Background

Pandemic A (H1N1) 2009 mortality rates varied widely from one country to another. Our aim was to identify potential socioeconomic determinants of pandemic mortality and explain between-country variation.

Methodology

Based on data from a total of 30 European countries, we applied random-effects Poisson regression models to study the relationship between pandemic mortality rates (May 2009 to May 2010) and a set of representative environmental, health care-associated, economic and demographic country-level parameters. The study was completed by June 2010.

Principal Findings

Most regression approaches indicated a consistent, statistically significant inverse association between pandemic influenza-related mortality and per capita government expenditure on health. The findings were similar in univariable [coefficient: –0.00028, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): –0.00046, –0.00010, p = 0.002] and multivariable analyses (including all covariates, coefficient: –0.00107, 95% CI: –0.00196, –0.00018, p = 0.018). The estimate was barely insignificant when the multivariable model included only significant covariates from the univariate step (coefficient: –0.00046, 95% CI: –0.00095, 0.00003, p = 0.063).

Conclusions

Our findings imply a significant inverse association between public spending on health and pandemic influenza mortality. In an attempt to interpret the estimated coefficient (–0.00028) for the per capita government expenditure on health, we observed that a rise of 100 international dollars was associated with a reduction in the pandemic influenza mortality rate by approximately 2.8%. However, further work needs to be done to unravel the mechanisms by which reduced government spending on health may have affected the 2009 pandemic influenza mortality.  相似文献

Accumulated evidence indicates that ROS fluctuations play a critical role in cell division. Dividing plant cells rapidly respond to them. Experimental disturbance of ROS homeostasis affects: tubulin polymerization; PPB, mitotic spindle and phragmoplast assembly; nuclear envelope dynamics; chromosome separation and movement; cell plate formation. Dividing cells mainly accumulate at prophase and delay in passing through the successive cell division stages. Notably, many dividing root cells of the rhd2 Arabidopsis thaliana mutants, lacking the RHD2/AtRBOHC protein function, displayed aberrations, comparable to those induced by low ROS levels. Some protein molecules, playing key roles in signal transduction networks inducing ROS production, participate in cell division. NADPH oxidases and their regulators PLD, PI3K and ROP-GTPases, are involved in MT polymerization and organization. Cellular ROS oscillations function as messages rapidly transmitted through MAPK pathways inducing MAP activation, thus affecting MT dynamics and organization. Introduction  

Cancer and infections are leading causes of mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) after diseases of the circulatory system, and therefore preventing these complications is important. In this study, we examined two categories of preventive services in SLE: cancer surveillance (cervical, breast, and colon) and immunizations (influenza and pneumococcal). We compared the receipt of these services in SLE to the general population, and identified subgroups of patients who were less likely to receive these services.  相似文献

Background

There is growing interest in the nature of slow variations of the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal observed in functional MRI resting-state studies. In humans, these slow BOLD variations are thought to reflect an underlying or intrinsic form of brain functional connectivity in discrete neuroanatomical systems. While these ‘resting-state networks’ may be relatively enduring phenomena, other evidence suggest that dynamic changes in their functional connectivity may also emerge depending on the brain state of subjects during scanning.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In this study, we examined healthy subjects (n = 24) with a mood induction paradigm during two continuous fMRI recordings to assess the effects of a change in self-generated mood state (neutral to sad) on the functional connectivity of these resting-state networks (n = 24). Using independent component analysis, we identified five networks that were common to both experimental states, each showing dominant signal fluctuations in the very low frequency domain (∼0.04 Hz). Between the two states, we observed apparent increases and decreases in the overall functional connectivity of these networks. Primary findings included increased connectivity strength of a paralimbic network involving the dorsal anterior cingulate and anterior insula cortices with subjects'' increasing sadness and decreased functional connectivity of the ‘default mode network’.

Conclusions/Significance

These findings support recent studies that suggest the functional connectivity of certain resting-state networks may, in part, reflect a dynamic image of the current brain state. In our study, this was linked to changes in subjective mood.  相似文献

Background  

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) transduce signals from extracellular space into the cell, through their interaction with G proteins, which act as switches forming hetero-trimers composed of different subunits (α,β,γ). The α subunit of the G protein is responsible for the recognition of a given GPCR. Whereas specialised resources for GPCRs, and other groups of receptors, are already available, currently, there is no publicly available database focusing on G Proteins and containing information about their coupling specificity with their respective receptors.  相似文献

The preparation of a collection of 131 small molecules, reminiscent of families of long chain N-acyl tyrosines, enamides and enol esters that have been isolated from heterologous expression of environmental DNA (eDNA) in Escherichia coli, is reported. Background  

Integral membrane proteins constitute about 20–30% of all proteins in the fully sequenced genomes. They come in two structural classes, the α-helical and the β-barrel membrane proteins, demonstrating different physicochemical characteristics, structure and localization. While transmembrane segment prediction for the α-helical integral membrane proteins appears to be an easy task nowadays, the same is much more difficult for the β-barrel membrane proteins. We developed a method, based on a Hidden Markov Model, capable of predicting the transmembrane β-strands of the outer membrane proteins of gram-negative bacteria, and discriminating those from water-soluble proteins in large datasets. The model is trained in a discriminative manner, aiming at maximizing the probability of correct predictions rather than the likelihood of the sequences.  相似文献

The effect on DNA and the antibacterial activity of a series of high nuclearity nickel compounds with three, four and five metal atoms were examined. The compounds have a mixed ligand composition with salicylhydroxamic acid and di-2-pyridyl-ketonoxime as chelate agents. In the trinuclear compound Ni(3)(shi)(2)(Hpko)(2)(py)(2)(1), two metal ions show a square planar geometry while the third one is in an octahedral environment. The compounds with four and five nickel atoms construct metallacrown cores with two distinct connectivities. The tetranuclear vacant metallacrown [12-MC(Ni(II)N(Hshi)2(pko)2)-4](2+) shows the connectivity pattern [-O-Ni-O-N-Ni-N-](2), while the pentanuclear ([Ni(II)][12-MC(Ni(II)N(shi)2(pko)2)-4])(2+) follows the pattern [-Ni-O-N-](4). Two distinct arrangements of the chelates around the ring metal ions were observed; a 6-5-6-5-6-5-6-5 arrangement for the [12-MC(Ni(II)N(Hshi)2(pko)2)-4] core and a 6-6-5-5-6-6-5-5 arrangement for the [12-MC(Ni(II)N(shi)2(pko)2)-4] core. Magnetic variable temperature susceptibility study of the trinuclear compound revealed the presence of one paramagnetic nickel(II) ion with strong crystal field dependence, with D=5.0(4) cm(-1), g(xy)=2.7(3) and g(z)=2.3(3). The effect of the synthesized Ni(II) complexes on the integrity and electrophoretic mobility of nucleic acids was examined. Only compounds 2, 3 and 4 altered the mobility of pDNA, forming high molecular weight concatamers at low concentrations or precipitates at higher concentrations. Antibacterial activity screening of the above compounds suggests that nickel compounds 2, 3 and 4 were the most active and can act as potent antibacterial agents.  相似文献
