Grazing is one of the prevalent human activities that even today are taking place inside protected areas with direct or indirect effects on ecosystems. In this study we analyzed the effects of grazing on plant species diversity, plant functional group (PFG) diversity and community composition of shrublands. We analyzed plant diversity data from 582 sampling plots located in 66 protected areas of the Greek Natura 2000 network, containing in total 1102 plant species and subspecies. We also classified a priori all plant species in seven PFGs: annual forbs, annual grasses/sedges, legumes, perennial forbs, perennial grasses/sedges, small shrubs and tall shrubs. For each site, grazing intensity was estimated in four classes (no grazing, low, medium and high grazing intensity). We found that, at the spatial and temporal scale of this study, as grazing intensity increased, so did total species richness. However, each PFG displayed a different response to grazing. Short-lived species (annual grasses or forbs and legumes) benefited from grazing and their species richness and proportion in the community increased with grazing. Perennial grasses and forbs species richness increased with grazing intensity, but their dominance decreased, since their proportion in the community declined. Short shrub species richness remained unaffected by grazing, while tall shrub diversity decreased. Finally, in sites without grazing the spatial pattern of species richness of the different PFGs was not congruent with each other, while in grazed sites they were significantly positively correlated (with the exception of tall shrubs). This finding may imply that grazing is a selective pressure organizing the community structure, and imposing a certain contribution of each PFG. So, in Mediterranean shrublands in protected areas with a long historical record of grazing, it seems that grazing promotes species diversity and its continuation on a portion of the landscape may be a necessary part of an effective management plan.  相似文献

In general RNA prediction problem includes genetic mapping, physical mapping and structure prediction. The ultimate goal of structure prediction is to obtain the three dimensional structure of bimolecules through computation. The key concept for solving the above mentioned problem is the appropriate representation of the biological structures. Even though, the problems that concern representations of certain biological structures like secondary structures either are characterized as NP-complete or with high complexity, few approximation algorithms and techniques had been constructed, mainly with polynomial complexity, concerning the prediction of RNA secondary structures. In this paper, a new class of Motzkin paths is introduced, the so-called semi-elevated inverse Motzkin peakless paths for the representation of two interacting RNA molecules. The basic combinatorial interpretations on single RNA secondary structures are extended via these new Motzkin paths on two RNA molecules and can be applied to the prediction methods of joint structures formed by interacting RNAs.  相似文献

A series of novel, potent and selective human β(2) adrenoceptor agonists incorporating a hydantoin or a uracil ring on the right-hand side phenyl ring of (R)-salmeterol is presented. Hydantoin 12a had long duration of action in vitro on guinea pig trachea, and 12h in guinea pigs in vivo at its EC(90) 25 μM. It had lower oral absorption than salmeterol in rats, and lower bioavailability than salmeterol in vivo in both rats and dogs (2% and 5%, respectively). An improved method for measuring the absorbed fraction of analogues dosed to rats, which considers the glucuronidated fraction is presented. Compound 12a was metabolised in human liver microsomes and hepatocytes to the active hydantoic acid 12m.  相似文献

A permutation-based algorithm is introduced for the representation of closed RNA secondary structures. It is an efficient 'loopless' algorithm, which generates the permutations on base-pairs of 'k-noncrossing' setting partitions. The proposed algorithm reduces the computational complexity of known similar techniques in O(n), using minimal change ordering and transposing of not adjacent elements.  相似文献

Considering the latest researches, disruptions in the regulation of mitochondrial dynamics, low energy production, increased reactive oxygen species and mtDNA damage are relevant to human diseases, mainly in neurogenerative diseases and cancer. This article represents inner mitochondrial membrane as a natural superconductor giving also the corresponding mathematical model; nevertheless the creation of electric complexes into the inner mitochondrial membrane due to the unusual concentration of protons disrupts the normal flow of electrons and the production of ATP. Therefore, we propose the term 'electric thromboses' for the explanation of these inadequate electrons' flow, presenting simultaneously a natural mechanism of this important and unique phenomenon.  相似文献

Receptor-mediated endocytosis 8 (RME-8) is a DnaJ domain containing protein implicated in translocation of Hsc70 to early endosomes for clathrin removal during retrograde transport. Previously, we have demonstrated that RME-8 associates with early endosomes in a phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (PI(3)P)-dependent fashion. In this study, we have now identified amino acid determinants required for PI(3)P binding within a region predicted to adopt a pleckstrin homology-like fold in the N terminus of RME-8. The ability of RME-8 to associate with PI(3)P and early endosomes is largely abolished when residues Lys17, Trp20, Tyr24, or Arg26 are mutated resulting in diffuse cytoplasmic localization of RME-8 while maintaining the ability to interact with Hsc70. We also provide evidence that RME-8 PI(3)P binding regulates early endosomal clathrin dynamics and alters the steady state localization of the cation-independent mannose 6-phosphate receptor. Interestingly, RME-8 endosomal association is also regulated by the PI(3)P-binding protein SNX1, a member of the retromer complex. Wild type SNX1 restores endosomal localization of RME-8 W20A, whereas a SNX1 variant deficient in PI(3)P binding disrupts endosomal localization of wild type RME-8. These results further highlight the critical role for PI(3)P in the RME-8-mediated organizational control of various endosomal activities, including retrograde transport.  相似文献

The Ionian archipelago is the second largest Greek archipelago after the Aegean, but the factors driving plant species diversity in the Ionian islands are still barely known. We used stepwise multiple regressions to investigate the factors affecting plant species diversity in 17 Ionian islands. Generalized dissimilarity modelling was applied to examine variation in the magnitude and rate of species turnover along environmental gradients, as well as to assess the relative importance of geographical and climatic factors in explaining species turnover. The values of the residuals from the ISAR log10‐transfomed models of native and endemic taxa were used as a measure of island floristic diversity. Area was confirmed to be the most powerful single explanatory predictor of all diversity metrics. Mean annual precipitation and temperature, as well as shortest distance to the nearest island are also significant predictors of vascular plant diversity. The island of Kalamos constitutes an important plant diversity hotspot in the Ionian archipelago. The recent formation of the islands, the close proximity to the mainland source and the relatively low dispersal filtering of the Ionian archipelago has resulted in islands with a flora principally comprising common species and a low proportion of endemics. Small islands keep a key role in conservation of plant priority sites.  相似文献
