Because of inadequate supply of water, inhabitants of five villagesclose to Tapachula, Chiapas, México, store water in cement tanksthat support large populations of Aedes aegypti. Biologicalcontrol using indigenous fish species were studied to control A. aegypti larvae in thosecontainers, since other organisms used as biological control agents areexpensive and unfamiliar to inhabitants of those towns. Other measures(chemical or physical control) are expensive and time consuming. Fiveindigenous fish species, Lepisosteus tropicus (Gill)(Lepisosteiformes: Lepisosteidae), Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier)(Cypriniformes: Characinidae), Brycon guatemalensis (Regan)(Cypriniformes: Characinidae), Ictalurus meridionalis(Günther) (Cypriniformes: Ictaluridae) and Poecilia sphenopsValenciennes (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae), currently used asmosquito control agents in the area were tested. Container indexes (ameasure of disease transmission potential) in the tested area werealways zero during the year of the study, independent of towns and fishspecies; this was significantly (P < 0.05) different from containerindexes prior to the test as well as from controls without fish. Nosignificant (P > 0.05) differences were recorded in the efficiency ofthe tested fish species feeding on A. aegypti larvae. Our resultsshow that all tested fish species can be considered as good biologicalagents for controlling A. aegypti larvae in Southern Mexico. 相似文献

Summary Biosynthesis of candicidin byStreptomyces acrimycini JI2236 was strongly inhibited by phosphate.p-Aminobenzoic acid (PABA) synthase activity, required for the synthesis of PABA, a candicindin precursor, was reduced by 72% in cells grown in medium supplemented with 7.5 mM phosphate. Hybridization studies showed that the DNA region ofS. acrimycini carrying thepabAB gene (encoding PABA synthase) is very similar to the homologous region ofS. griseus 3570.S. acrimycini was easily transformed with plasmids containing thepabAB gene ofS. griseus. Four transformants were studied in detail; three of the transformants synthesized higher levels of PABA synthase and two transformants produced more candicidin than control cultures transformed with pIJ699. The fourth transformant was unable to synthesize the antibiotic. Formation of PABA synthase and candicidin production was equally sensitive to phosphate regulation in transformants with thepabAB than in the untransformedS. acrimycini strain. 相似文献

Two elements, the products of genes copG and rnall , are involved in the copy-number control of plasmid pLS1. RNA II is synthesized in a dosage-dependent manner. Mutations in both components have been characterized. To determine the regulatory role of the two genes, we have cloned copG , rnall or both elements at various gene dosages into pLS1-compatible plasmids. Assays of incompatibility towards wild-type or mutant pLS1 plasmids showed that: (i) the rnall gene product, rather than the DNA sequence encoding it, is responsible for the incompatibility, and (ii) CopG and RNA II act in trans and are able to correct up fluctuations in pLS1 copy number. A correlation between the gene dosage at which the regulatory elements were supplied and the incompatibility effect on the resident plasmid was observed. The entire copG-rnall circuit has a synergistic effect when compared with any of its components in the correction of pLS1 copy-number fluctuations, indicating that, in the homoplasmid steady-state situation, the control of pLS1 replication is exerted by the co-ordinate action of CopG and RNA II. 相似文献

- The redbay ambrosia beetle, Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), vectors the mycopathogen that causes laurel wilt, a lethal vascular disease of trees in the Lauraceae. Since being detected in Georgia, USA in 2002, this invasive pest has become established in 11 additional states.
- With continued spread, X. glabratus will likely enter Mexico. In advance of this event, this study was initiated to assess the risk posed to eight native laurels and Hass avocados, the predominant cultivar grown in Mexico.
- Wood bolts from each species were used in (a) field tests to determine the relative attraction of female X. glabratus, (b) laboratory bioassays to evaluate boring preferences, and (c) GC–MS analyses to identify host kairomones. For comparison, tests included control bolt treatments consisting of silkbay (an attractive U.S. laurel) and Simmonds avocado (a Florida cultivar susceptible to laurel wilt).
- Hass avocado and two native laurels (Persea schiedeana and Ocotea heribertoi vel aff.) were highly attractive to females and elicited strong boring responses. These species were high in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, including α-copaene and α-cubebene.
- Results of this study suggest that X. glabratus could become a serious agricultural and forest pest upon incursion into Mexico, with severe economic and ecological impacts.

Semi-purified DEN-4 envelope protein, obtained in Pichia pastoris, was capable of generating neutralising and protecting antibodies after immunisation in mice. Here we compared two purification processes of this recombinant protein using two chromatographic steps: immune-affinity chromatography and immobilised metal ion adsorption chromatography (IMAC). The protein purified by both methods produced functional antibodies reflected by titres of haemagglutination inhibition and neutralisation. Abstract The G + C content in a sequenced region of 27 kb of the Nocardia lactamdurans genome is 70.4 and 70.6% in the 14 characterized ORFs, showing an extreme average G + C content (94.9%) in the third codon position. The codon usage parameters of the N. lactamdurans genes studied are closely related and depart weakly from the values of other species of the genus Nocardia .
