Summary To investigate scene segmentation in the visual system we present a model of two reciprocally connected visual areas comprising
spiking neurons. The peripheral area P is modeled similar to the primary visual cortex, while the central area C is modeled
as an associative memory representing stimulus objects according to Hebbian learning. Without feedback from area C, spikes
corresponding to stimulus representations in P are synchronized only locally (slow state). Feedback from C can induce fast
oscillations and an increase of synchronization ranges (fast state). Presenting a superposition of several stimulus objects,
scene segmentation happens on a time scale of hundreds of milliseconds by alternating epochs of the slow and fast state, where
neurons representing the same object are simultaneously in the fast state. We relate our simulation results to various phenomena
observed in neurophysiological experiments, such as stimulus-dependent synchronization of fast oscillations, synchronization

Satellite cells are myogenic stem cells responsible for the post-natal growth, repair and maintenance of skeletal muscle.
This review focuses on the basic biology of the satellite cell with emphasis on its role in muscle repair and parallels between
embryonic myogenesis and muscle regeneration. Recent advances have altered the long-standing view of the satellite cell as
a committed myogenic stem cell derived directly from the fetal myoblast. The experimental basis for this evolving perspective
will be highlighted as will the relationship between the satellite cell and other newly discovered muscle stem cell populations.

Data on the genetic structure of tree and shrub populations on the continental scale have accumulated dramatically over the past decade. However, our ability to make inferences on the impact of the last ice age still depends crucially on the availability of informative palaeoecological data. This is well illustrated by the results from a recent project, during which new pollen fossil maps were established and the variation in chloroplast DNA was studied in 22 European species of trees and shrubs. Species exhibit very different levels of genetic variation between and within populations, and obviously went through very different histories after Ice Ages. However, when palaeoecological data are non-informative, inferences on past history are difficult to draw from entirely genetic data. On the other hand, as illustrated by a study in ponderosa pine, when we can infer the species' history with some certainty, coalescent simulations can be used and new hypotheses can be tested. 相似文献

The early diverging eukaryotic parasite Giardia lamblia is unusual in that it contains two apparently identical nuclei in the vegetative trophozoite stage. We have determined the nuclear and cellular genome ploidy of G. lamblia cells during all stages of the life cycle. During vegetative growth, the nuclei cycle between a diploid (2N) and tetraploid (4N) genome content and the cell, consequently, cycles between 4N and 8N. Stationary phase trophozoites arrest in the G2 phase with a ploidy of 8N (two nuclei, each with a 4N ploidy). On its way to cyst formation, a G1 trophozoite goes through two successive rounds of chromosome replication without an intervening cell division event. Fully differentiated cysts contain four nuclei, each with a ploidy of 4N, resulting in a cyst ploidy of 16N. The newly excysted cell, for which we suggest the term 'excyzoite', contains four nuclei (cellular ploidy 16N). In a reversal of the events occurring during encystation, the excyzoite divides twice to form four trophozoites containing two diploid nuclei each. The formation of multiple cells from a single cyst is likely to be one of the main reasons for the low infectious doses of G. lamblia . 相似文献

The Database of Arabidopsis thaliana Annotation (D At A) was created to enable easy access to and analysis of all the Arabidopsis genome project annotation. The database was constructed using the completed A.thaliana genomic sequence data currently in GenBank. An automated annotation process was used to predict coding sequences for GenBank records that do not include annotation. D At A also contains protein motifs and protein similarities derived from searches of the proteins in D At A with motif databases and the non-redundant protein database. The database is routinely updated to include new GenBank submissions for Arabidopsis genomic sequences and new Blast and protein motif search results. A web interface to D At A allows coding sequences to be searched by name, comment, blast similarity or motif field. In addition, browse options present lists of either all the protein names or identified motifs present in the sequenced A.thaliana genome. Recent zebrafish studies have shown that the late appearing pancreatic endocrine cells are derived from pancreatic ducts but the regulatory factors involved are still largely unknown. Here, we show that the zebrafish sox9b gene is expressed in pancreatic ducts where it labels the pancreatic Notch-responsive cells previously shown to be progenitors. Inactivation of sox9b disturbs duct formation and impairs regeneration of beta cells from these ducts in larvae. sox9b expression in the midtrunk endoderm appears at the junction of the hepatic and ventral pancreatic buds and, by the end of embryogenesis, labels the hepatopancreatic ductal system as well as the intrapancreatic and intrahepatic ducts. Ductal morphogenesis and differentiation are specifically disrupted in sox9b mutants, with the dysmorphic hepatopancreatic ducts containing misdifferentiated hepatocyte-like and pancreatic-like cells. We also show that maintenance of sox9b expression in the extrapancreatic and intrapancreatic ducts requires FGF and Notch activity, respectively, both pathways known to prevent excessive endocrine differentiation in these ducts. Furthermore, beta cell recovery after specific ablation is severely compromised in sox9b mutant larvae. The role of the β2AR (β2 adrenergic receptor) after stroke is unclear as pharmacological manipulations of the β2AR have produced contradictory results. We previously showed that mice deficient in the β2AR (β2KO) had smaller infarcts compared with WT (wild-type) mice (FVB) after MCAO (middle cerebral artery occlusion), a model of stroke. To elucidate mechanisms of this neuroprotection, we evaluated changes in gene expression using microarrays comparing differences before and after MCAO, and differences between genotypes. Genes associated with inflammation and cell deaths were enriched after MCAO in both genotypes, and we identified several genes not previously shown to increase following ischaemia (Ccl9, Gem and Prg4). In addition to networks that were similar between genotypes, one network with a central core of GPCR (G-protein-coupled receptor) and including biological functions such as carbohydrate metabolism, small molecule biochemistry and inflammation was identified in FVB mice but not in β2KO mice. Analysis of differences between genotypes revealed 11 genes differentially expressed by genotype both before and after ischaemia. We demonstrate greater Glo1 protein levels and lower Pmaip/Noxa mRNA levels in β2KO mice in both sham and MCAO conditions. As both genes are implicated in NF-κB (nuclear factor κB) signalling, we measured p65 activity and TNFα (tumour necrosis factor α) levels 24 h after MCAO. MCAO-induced p65 activation and post-ischaemic TNFα production were both greater in FVB compared with β2KO mice. These results suggest that loss of β2AR signalling results in a neuroprotective phenotype in part due to decreased NF-κB signalling, decreased inflammation and decreased apoptotic signalling in the brain. 相似文献
