Scuba diving is now one of the major form of commercial use of marine protected areas (MPAs) around the world and the control of its potential impacts on the marine environment represents a fundamental key to manage this recreational activity in highly dived areas. A potential tool to tackle such issues has been thought to be the definition of a value of recreational carrying capacity of an area, but this approach has been rarely considered management-effective. Therefore, the first step for effectively managing scuba-diving should be ‘bottom-up’: characterizing the benthic communities potentially affected by diving and evaluating their vulnerability. Aim of this paper is to propose a tool to define an index of vulnerability for dive trails (STVI: scuba trail vulnerability index). This has taken into consideration both physical and biological features of each trail. All the considered features are represented by non-quantitative variables, because either they are purely qualitative or their quantitative measurement is impractical. The management of such qualitative information and its translation into a formal methodology was performed by means of fuzzy logic, which has been repeatedly proposed as a powerful technique to develop indices of environmental quality. The approach adopted in this study provided a useful tool for the preliminary assessment of the potential vulnerability of benthic assemblages to scuba-diving and may represent an alternative method to the assessment of carrying capacity. The application of this index will enable management strategies for potentially reducing the degradation of benthic organisms/assemblages, and allowing a sustainable use of MPAs.  相似文献

Biophysical characteristics of sapwood and outer parenchyma water storage compartments were studied in stems of eight dominant Brazilian Cerrado tree species to assess the impact of differences in tissue capacitance on whole-plant water relations. The rate of decline in tissue water potential with relative water content (RWC) was greater in the outer parenchyma than in the sapwood for most of the species, resulting in tissue-and species-specific differences in capacitance. Sapwood capacitance on a tissue volume basis ranged from 40 to 160 kg m-3 MPa-1, whereas outer parenchyma capacitance ranged from 25 to only 60 kg m-3 MPa-1. In addition, osmotic potentials at full turgor and at the turgor loss point were more negative for the outer parenchyma compared with the sapwood, and the maximum bulk elastic modulus was higher for the outer parenchyma than for the sapwood. Sapwood capacitance decreased linearly with increasing sapwood density across species, but there was no significant correlation between outer parenchyma capacitance and tissue density. Midday leaf water potential, the total hydraulic conductance of the soil/leaf pathway and stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs) all increased with stem volumetric capacitance, or with the relative contribution of stored water to total daily transpiration. However, the difference between the pre-dawn water potential of non-transpiring leaves and the weighted average soil water potential, a measure of the water potential disequilibrium between the plant and soil, increased asymptotically with total stem capacitance across species, implying that overnight recharge of water storage compartments was incomplete in species with greater capacitance. Overall, stem capacitance contributes to homeostasis in the diurnal and seasonal water balance of Cerrado trees.  相似文献

Several pests are capable of decreasing crop production causing severe economical and social losses. Aiming to find novel molecules that could impede the digestion process of different pests, a screening of alpha-amylase and trypsin-like proteinase inhibitors was carried out in Prosopis juliflora, showing the presence of both in dry seeds. Furthermore, a novel trypsin inhibitor, with molecular mass of 13,292 Da, was purified showing remarkable in vitro activity against T. castaneum and C. maculatus.  相似文献

Many biological properties have been attributed to ruthenium complexes including anti-tumor activity and the attenuation of reperfusion damage and infarct size. In this work, we characterize the antioxidant activity of trans-[RuCl2(nic)4] where nic is 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid and trans-[RuCl2(i-nic)4] where i-nic is 4-pyridinecarboxylic acid by (i) evaluation of total antioxidant potential (TRAP); (ii) prevention of DNA damage induced by hydrogen peroxide using the alkaline comet assay; and (iii) the prevention of lipid peroxidation and cell death induced by iron in liver slices. Our results suggest that nic has stronger antioxidant potential when compared to the i-nic. Higher doses (above 200 microM) of these compounds gave genotoxic effects, but the antioxidant potential could be obtained with the use lower doses (0.1-10 microM).  相似文献

Summary Stereological studies showed that treatment of normal adult human adrenocortical cells in primary culture with ACTH or cyclic-AMP for 2 days results in similar increases in the volume of cells, of the mitochondrial and membrane space compartments and of the surface area of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial cristae, and decrease in the lipid content of the cells. These changes were more marked after 8 days of treatment. Treatment for 2 days with cyclic-GMP had no striking effects on cell ultrastructure, whereas an 8-day treatment led to ultrastructural changes similar to those obtained after 2 days of ACTH-or cyclic-AMP-treatment. A discrete population of untreated cortical cells maintained a slow proliferation that was not effected by exposure to cyclic-GMP, but was significantly increased in cultures treated with ACTH or cyclic-AMP. Radioimmunological studies showed that untreated cortical cells kept secreting progesterone and cortisol and that ACTH, but neither cyclic nucleotide, increased the secretion rate per cell of both hormones. These results assign a major role to cyclic-AMP and a minor one to cyclic-GMP in the mediation of the differentiation-promoting and trophic effects, but not in the steroidogenic effects of ACTH on the human adrenal cortex.The authors wish to thank Miss A. Removal of 5 of the 8 most successful males in a fallow deer lek between breeding seasons led to an increase in fighting rate of males and a decrease in mating rate of both sexes. The increase in fighting was likely due to disruption of the social hierarchy. The lower mating rate of females was not due to disruption of copulations by territorial males, nor did it appear to result from disturbance from fights. We suggest that difficulties in mate choice related to an unstable male hierarchy resulted in females either increasing their length of stay in the lek, visiting the lek more than once before mating, or leaving the lek without mating.  相似文献

During a prospective epidemiological study of gastrointestinal health effects associated with the consumption of drinking water produced by reverse-osmosis domestic units, a correlation was demonstrated between the bacterial counts on R2A medium incubated at 35 degrees C and the reported gastrointestinal symptoms in families who used these units. A univariate correlation was found with bacterial counts on R2A medium at 20 degrees C but was confounded by the bacterial counts at 35 degrees C. Other variables, such as family size and amount of water consumed, were not independently explanatory of the rate of illness. These observations raise concerns for the possibility of increased disease associated with certain point-of-use treatment devices for domestic use when high levels of bacterial growth occur.  相似文献
