Ornamental colouration is often due to carotenoid pigments and varies inter- and intra-specifically. This paper reports on variation in beak colour of the gentoo penguin, Pygoscelis papua, corresponding to different geographical locations along a latitudinal gradient in the Antarctic Peninsula (from King George Island (62o15′S–58o37′W) to Rongé Island (64o40′S–62o40′W). The gentoo penguin has a conspicuous red spot on both sides of the beak that indicates the presence of the carotenoid pigment, astaxanthin. Beak colouration was measured with a portable spectrophotometer for 20 individuals in three locations, along the Western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. In the study area, marked variation can be found in terms of factors such us parasite load, human impact, variations in UV radiation and the abundance of krill; all possibly affecting carotenoid availability for signalling purposes. Colour traits were expected to be more intense, that is more vivid, saturated and pure, in places where there is diminished pressure from factors such as contamination, parasites or diseases, all of which may reduce the availability of carotenoids for other functions, such as antioxidant or immune stimulation involving physiological trade-offs. Likewise, colour traits might be predicted to be more intense where carotenoid sources, krill in the case of gentoo penguins, are more available. However, contrary to this initial expectation, our results indicate that northerly penguins’ populations, which are in the most polluted and parasitized areas, have more saturated beaks. An alternative hypothesis suggests that environmental constraints relating to the variation in abundance of krill may explain the geographical variation in colour expression found among gentoo penguins.  相似文献

Inhalation of allergens produced by the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) induces IgE Ab production and the development of asthma in genetically predisposed individuals. The cloning and expression in Escherichia coli of P. americana tropomyosin allergen have been achieved. The protein shares high homology with other arthropod tropomyosins (80% identity) but less homology with vertebrate ones (50% identity). The recombinant allergen was produced in E. coli as a nonfusion protein with a yield of 9 mg/l of bacterial culture. Both natural and recombinant tropomyosins were purified by isoelectric precipitation. P. americana allergen 1 (Per a 1) and Per a 7 (tropomyosin) are to date the only cross-reacting allergens found in cockroaches. ELISA and Western blot inhibition experiments, using natural and recombinant purified tropomyosins from shrimp and cockroach, showed that tropomyosin induced cross-reactivity of IgE from patients allergic to these allergens, suggesting that this molecule could be a common allergen among invertebrates.  相似文献

Binocular vision is a visual property that allows fine discrimination of in-depth distance (stereopsis), as well as enhanced light and contrast sensitivity. In mammals enhanced binocular vision is structurally associated with a large degree of frontal binocular overlap, the presence of a corresponding retinal specialization containing a fovea or an area centralis, and well-developed ipsilateral retinal projections to the lateral thalamus (GLd). We compared these visual traits in two visually active species of the genus Octodon that exhibit contrasting visual habits: the diurnal Octodon degus, and the nocturnal Octodon lunatus. The O. lunatus visual field has a prominent 100° frontal binocular overlap, much larger than the 50° of overlap found in O. degus. Cells in the retinal ganglion cell layer were 40% fewer in O. lunatus (180,000) than in O. degus (300,000). O. lunatus has a poorly developed visual streak, but a well developed area centralis, located centrally near the optic disk (peak density of 4,352 cells/mm2). O. degus has a highly developed visual streak, and an area centralis located more temporally (peak density of 6,384 cells/mm2). The volumes of the contralateral GLd and superior colliculus (SC) are 15% larger in O. degus compared to O. lunatus. However, the ipsilateral projections to GLd and SC are 500% larger in O. lunatus than in O. degus. Other retinorecipient structures related to ocular movements and circadian activity showed no statistical differences between species. Our findings strongly suggest that nocturnal visual behavior leads to an enhancement of the structures associated with binocular vision, at least in the case of these rodents. Expansion of the binocular visual field in nocturnal species may have a beneficial effect in light and contrast sensitivity, but not necessarily in stereopsis. We discuss whether these conclusions can be extended to other mammalian and non-mammalian amniotes.  相似文献

New studies show that the retina also undergoes pathological changes during the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). While transgenic mouse models used in these previous studies have offered insight into this phenomenon, they do not model human sporadic AD, which is the most common form. Recently, the Octodon degus has been established as a sporadic model of AD. Degus display age-related cognitive impairment associated with Aβ aggregates and phosphorylated tau in the brain. Our aim for this study was to examine the expression of AD-related proteins in young, adult and old degus retina using enzyme-linked or fluorescence immunohistochemistry and to quantify the expression using slot blot and western blot assays. Aβ4G8 and Aβ6E10 detected Aβ peptides in some of the young animals but the expression was higher in the adults. Aβ peptides were observed in the inner and outer segment of the photoreceptors, the nerve fiber layer (NFL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL). Expression was higher in the central retinal region than in the retinal periphery. Using an anti-oligomer antibody we detected Aβ oligomer expression in the young, adult and old retina. Immunohistochemical labeling showed small discrete labeling of oligomers in the GCL that did not resemble plaques. Congo red staining did not result in green birefringence in any of the animals analyzed except for one old (84 months) animal. We also investigated expression of tau and phosphorylated tau. Expression was seen at all ages studied and in adults it was more consistently observed in the NFL-GCL. Hyperphosphorylated tau detected with AT8 antibody was significantly higher in the adult retina and it was localized to the GCL. We confirm for the first time that Aβ peptides and phosphorylated tau are expressed in the retina of degus. This is consistent with the proposal that AD biomarkers are present in the eye.  相似文献

Recent studies have demonstrated that bone marrow stromal cells can undergo adipogenesis or osteoblastogenesis in vivo, and in vitro, and that peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) plays a central role in the control of adipocyte differentiation. In the present study, we treated a murine stromal cell line (TMS-14) with a cocktail of dexamethasone, insulin and glucose (DIG cocktail), which caused the cells to convert to fat-laden cells with adipocyte-like morphology. We also exposed TMS-14 cells to DIG cocktail followed by 15-deoxy Delta(12,14)-prostaglandin J2 (15d-PGJ2), a ligand of PPAR gamma, interleukin- 11 (IL-11), 9-cis retinoic acid (9-cis RA) and vitamin K2. 15d-PGJ2 enhanced DIG cocktail-induced adipogenesis, whereas IL-11, 9-cis RA and vitamin K2 each inhibited adipogenesis induced by DIG cocktail. The gene expressions of four adipogenesis markers, PPAR gamma 2, adipocyte P2 (aP2), adipocyte determination and differentiation factor 1 (ADD1), and fatty acid synthase (FAS) were enhanced by DIG cocktail and these expressions were more enhanced by 15d-PGJ2, in contrast they were attenuated by 9-cis RA. IL-11 also attenuated the adipogenesis markers except ADD1. Western blotting showed that 15d-PGJ2 enhanced the levels of PPAR gamma, C/EBP alpha and RXR alpha proteins, while IL-11 and 9-cis RA decreased the level of PPAR gamma protein, but not C/EBP alpha protein and vitamin K2 decreased the level of C/EBP alpha protein. We also tested the effect of 15d-PGJ2 on osteoblastogenesis, using TMS-12 cells, another stromal cell clone from the same mouse, which differentiate into osteoblasts spontaneously. 15d-PGJ2 did not affect osteoblastogenesis, as detected by von Kossa staining and Cbfa-1 gene expression. These data indicate that 15d-PGJ2 enhances the expression of both PPAR gamma and C/EBP alpha and as a result it stimulates adipogenesis in murine bone marrow cells.  相似文献

The maintenance of gene flow in species that have experienced population contractions and are geographically fragmented is important to the maintenance of genetic variation and evolutionary potential; thus, gene flow is also important to conservation and management of these species. For example, the Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) has recovered after severe population reductions during the 19th and 20th centuries, but population numbers remain below historical levels. In this study, we characterized gene flow among management units of the Reddish Egret by using ten nuclear microsatellite markers and part of the mitochondrial (mtDNA) control region from 176 nestlings captured at eight localities in Mexico (Baja California, Chiapas, Tamaulipas, and Yucatan), the USA (Texas, Louisiana, and Florida), and the Bahamas. We found evidence of population structure and that males disperse more often and across longer distances compared with females, which is congruent with previous banding and telemetry data. The maternally inherited mtDNA and biparentally inherited microsatellite data supported slightly different MU models; however, when interpreted together, a four MU model that considered population structure and geographic proximity was most optimal. Namely, MU 1 (Baja California); MU 2 (Chiapas); MU 3 (Yucatan, Tamaulipas, Texas, and Louisiana); and MU 4 (Florida and the Bahamas). Regions outside our sampled localities (e.g., the Greater Antilles and South America) require additional sampling to fully understand gene flow and movement of individuals across the species’ entire range. However, the four MUs we have defined group nesting localities into genetically similar subpopulations, which can guide future management plans.  相似文献

The localization of Oskar at the posterior pole of the Drosophila oocyte induces the assembly of the pole plasm and therefore defines where the abdomen and germ cells form in the embryo. This localization is achieved by the targeting of oskar mRNA to the posterior and the localized activation of its translation. oskar mRNA seems likely to be actively transported along microtubules, since its localization requires both an intact microtubule cytoskeleton and the plus end-directed motor kinesin I, but nothing is known about how the RNA is coupled to the motor. Here, we describe barentsz, a novel gene required for the localization of oskar mRNA. In contrast to all other mutations that disrupt this process, barentsz-null mutants completely block the posterior localization of oskar mRNA without affecting bicoid and gurken mRNA localization, the organization of the microtubules, or subsequent steps in pole plasm assembly. Surprisingly, most mutant embryos still form an abdomen, indicating that oskar mRNA localization is partially redundant with the translational control. Barentsz protein colocalizes to the posterior with oskar mRNA, and this localization is oskar mRNA dependent. Thus, Barentsz is essential for the posterior localization of oskar mRNA and behaves as a specific component of the oskar RNA transport complex.  相似文献

Plant homeodomain (PHD) fingers are frequently present in proteins involved in chromatin remodelling, and some of them bind to histones. The family of proteins inhibitors of growth (ING) contains a PHD finger that bind to histone-3 trimethylated at lysine 4, and those of ING1 and ING2 also act as nuclear phosphoinositide receptors. We have determined the structure of ING4 PHD, and characterised its binding to phosphoinositides and histone methylated tails. In contrast to ING2, ING4 is not a phosphoinositide receptor and binds with similar affinity to the different methylation states of histone-3 at lysine 4.  相似文献

Anaerobic metabolism and oxygen carrying-capacity of white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) exposed to short term (three days) and long term (two weeks) moderate hypoxia (2-2.6 mg/L) was investigated. Glucose and lactate levels in hemolymph increased under both hypoxic conditions, indicating an activation of anaerobic pathways during the two-weeks exposure period. In muscle, no differences of glucose and lactate levels were observed between the control group and the exposed groups. In animals exposed to hypoxia for two weeks, hemocyanin and copper in hemolymph were higher than in animals under normoxic conditions or exposed for three days. These results indicate that an increase in oxygen carrying-capacity in shrimp is evident only after a sustained condition of hypoxia. Copper levels in the hepatopancreas decreased in both hypoxic conditions, suggesting a mobilization of copper stores for hemocyanin synthesis. These results indicate that penaeid shrimp can tolerate moderate hypoxic conditions by physiological adaptations, such as anaerobic metabolism and increased oxygen carrying-capacity. These adaptations require an adequate dietary supply of proteins and copper for hemocyanin synthesis and of carbohydrates for anaerobic metabolism.  相似文献
