The task-dependence of the presynaptic inhibition of the muscle spindle primary afferents in human forearm muscles was studied, focusing in particular on the modulation associated with the co-contraction of antagonist muscles and the activation of cutaneous afferents. The changes known to affect the motoneuron proprioceptive assistance during antagonist muscle co-activation in human leg and arm muscles were compared. The evidence available so far that these changes might reflect changes in the presynaptic inhibition of the muscle spindle afferent is briefly reviewed. The possible reasons for changes in presynaptic inhibition during the antagonist muscle co-contraction are discussed. Some new experiments on the wrist extensor muscles are briefly described. The results showed that the changes in the Ia presynaptic inhibition occurring during the co-contraction of the wrist flexor and extensor muscles while the hand cutaneous receptors were being activated (the subject's hand was clenched around a manipulandum) could be mimicked by contracting the wrist extensor muscles alone while applying extraneous stimulation to the hand cutaneous receptors. It is concluded that besides the possible contribution of inputs generated by the co-contraction of antagonist muscles and by supraspinal pathways, cutaneous inputs may play a major role in modulating the proprioceptive assistance during manipulatory movements.  相似文献

Sodium chlorate is an achiral molecule that crystallizes from water in the chiral space group P2(1)3. In the absence of chiral perturbations, a random distribution of (+) and (-) crystals is obtained. Kondepudi(2) has shown that constantly stirring an evaporating NaClO(3) solution gives mostly either (+) or (-) crystals. Repeating this experiment many times gives equal numbers of (+) and (-) sets of crystals. Herein we report that when evaporating aqueous NaClO(3) is subjected to beta particles from an Sr-90 source, an asymmetric distribution of (+) and (-) crystals favoring the (+) crystals is obtained. The beta particles are energetic polarized electrons that are approximately 80% of left-handed helicity. By a poorly understood mechanism, the spin polarized electrons produce chiral nucleating sites that favor formation of the (+)-NaClO(3) crystals. Exposure of the evaporating solution instead to energetic positrons from an Na-22 source yields mainly (-)-NaClO(3) crystals. Polarized positrons are of predominantly right-handed helicity. One may conclude that the chirality of the radiation is correlated with the chirality of the crystals being generated.  相似文献

Abstract

Two types of glandular hairs have been found in Cistus laurifolius L. (Cistaceae). Both types present a great degree of morphological and histochemical variability, not only at population level but even within a single plant. This fact excludes that the hairs of C. laurifolius could be given a diagnostic value. The two hair types have a mixed hydrophilous and lipophilous secretion in which we have identified, especially in one type of them, cathecolic tannins. The powerful antimycotic activity of such tannins, makes the hairs particularly interesting for the possible ecological implications.  相似文献

The incidence of thyroid cancer has continuously increased due to its detection in the preclinical stage. Clinical research in thyroid pathology is focusing on the development of new diagnostic tools to improve the stratification of nodules that have biological, practical and economic consequences on the management of patients. Several clinical questions related to thyroid carcinoma remain open and the use of proteomic research in the hunt for new targets with potential diagnostic applications has an important role in the solutions. Many different proteomic approaches are used to investigate thyroid lesions, including mass spectrometry profiling and imaging technologies. These approaches have been applied to different human tissues (cytological specimens, frozen sections, formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue or Tissue Micro Arrays). Moreover, other specimens are used for biomarker discovery, such as cell lines and the secretome. Alternative approaches, such as metabolomics and lipidomics, are also used and integrated within proteomics.  相似文献

Objective

To investigate dopaminergic function in a large cohort of patients with corticobasal syndrome (CBS) and describe its relationship with clinical features in comparison to Parkinson''s disease and healthy control subjects. In addition, we assessed prevalence and features of individuals with CBS and in vivo evidence of preserved nigral neuronal density.

Background

Substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) neuronal degeneration is a mandatory pathological criterion for definite corticobasal degeneration, though sporadic autopsy-proven cases with ante-mortem imaging evidence of preserved nigral terminals have been recently described.

Methods

In this multicenter study, we investigated presynaptic nigrostriatal function in 36 outpatients fulfilling clinical criteria for “probable corticobasal degeneration” (age 71±7.3 years; disease duration 3.9±1.6 years), 37 PD and 24 healthy control subjects using FP-CIT single photon emission computed tomography. Clinical, neuropsychological, and magnetic resonance imaging assessment was performed to characterize CBS patients. Linear discriminant analysis was used to categorize normal vs. pathological scans.

Results

FP-CIT binding reduction in patients with CBS was characterized by larger variability, more uniform reduction throughout the striatum and greater hemispheric asymmetry compared to PD. Moreover, there was no significant correlation between tracer uptake values and clinical features such as disease duration and severity. Despite all CBS subjects showed obvious bilateral extrapyramidal signs, FP-CIT uptake was found to be normal bilaterally in four CBS patients and only unilaterally in other four cases. Extensive clinical, neuropsychological and imaging assessment did not reveal remarkable differences between CBS subjects with normal vs. pathological FP-CIT uptake.

Conclusions

Our findings support the hypothesis that extrapyramidal motor symptoms in CBS are not invariably associated with SNc neuronal degeneration and that supranigral factors may play a major role in several cases. CBS individuals with normal FP-CIT uptake do not show any clinical or cognitive feature suggesting a different pathology than CBD.  相似文献
