Observations on territoriality and the associated odour-marking and foraging behaviours in male Pachymelus limbarus Saussure, a Malagasy endemic anthophorid bee, are reported. Data indicated a monandrous mating system where virgin females are attracted, probably by pheromonal cues, to male-patrolled territories associated with flowering, nectariferous Plectran- rhussensu lato species (Lamiaceae). One male observed in detail applied odour marks every 30–80 minutes on twigs around a food-resource area that contained c. 850 flowers. This marking behaviour always preceded territory residence. The male spent c. 80% of his time patrolling. Meanwhile, any intruding flying insect was inspected or chased, which caused conspecific males, as well as often females, to leave the site. The resident male fed frequently on flowers within his territory (c. 3,600 flower-visits on fine days), except immediately following odour-marking bouts. His flower-visiting was often released by interactions with intruding insects entering the territory. The observations provide the first example of male territoriality based on resource defence polygyny in the bee family Anthophoridae. The importance of resource distribution in the evolution of male territoriality in bees is discussed.  相似文献

Summary A peptide consisting of 20 amino acid residues, derived from a C-terminal fragment of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and showing high affinity to NPY receptors, was synthesised. Its sequence is PAADLARYRHYIN-LITRQRY-NH2, and the solution structure was calculated from NMR-derived distance and torsion angle restraints, obtained at 15°C in a solvent mixture of water and 30% (v/v) 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol, by using DIANA and restrained energy minimisation. The structure was found to consist of a well-defined -helix in the centre, with a few residues at the termini having less well defined conformations. The spinlattice and spin-spin relaxation rates of -carbons have been determined on 13C at natural abundance. From 1D experiments the global rotational correlation time was determined and from 2D experiments the dynamics of each individual residue was obtained. The results demonstrate that the C-H vectors in the -helix essentially follow the global motion. Towards the termini, contributions from local dynamics increase. This tendency is correlated to the increasing uncertainty of the structure towards the peptide ends. An effective molecular volume was calculated from the temperature dependence of the global rotational correlation time. This is well compatible with a monomeric peptide, solvated by water and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol. The presence of peptide dimers was ruled out as being inconsistent with the relaxation data.Supplementary material available from the authors: Two data tables and 10 PDB coordinate files of the calculated NMR structures of P7. One data table contains all detected and integrated NOE intensities; the other connects each proton and pseudoatom to an atom number used in the NOE table. The major virion protein of polyomavirus, VP1, consists of about six isoelectric species designated A through F. The minor species D, E, and F are phosphorylated and are thought to serve as viral receptors. We first wanted to distinguish whether all VP1 species are derived by post-translational modification from a common amino acid sequence or whether one or more of the species contain a region(s) of altered amino acid sequence resulting from alternate mRNA processing. We compared the VP1 species by detailed peptide mapping with several combinations of specific protease and radioisotopic labels. This approach enabled us to examine more than 80% of the predicted VP1 sequence, including the amino-and carboxy-termini. We found no evidence of sequence differences among any of the VP1 species. The specific incorporation of 32Pi was found to be the same for all of the phosphorylated species. Comparison of the phosphorylation sites of in vivo 32Pi-labeled D, E, and F by peptide mapping showed them to be identical. Each phosphorylated species contained a single major phosphopeptide and several minor phosphopeptides. The major phosphoamino acid, identified by acid hydrolysis, was phosphothreonine, with phosphoserine also present. By using chemical cleavage methods, we localized the major phosphorylation region to a central portion of the VP1 sequence. We discuss some features of this region and relate this information to functional implications of phosphorylation.  相似文献

Background  

Several types of selective forces can act to promote parasite specialization. Parasites might specialize on some suitable hosts at the cost of decreasing effectiveness when exploiting other species of hosts, and specialization can be more easily selected for in hosts that the parasites will easily find. Thus demographic characteristics of suitable hosts such as population density and its spatial consistency could be key factors predicting probability of parasite specialization and speciation. Here, we explore this hypothesis by studying the relationship between occurence of specialized races of the European cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) (i.e. gentes) and mean and coefficient of variation in population density estimated for 12 different European regions.  相似文献

We used stochastic dynamic programming to investigate a spectacular migration strategy in the black brant Branta bernicla nigricans, a species of goose. Black brant migration is well suited for theoretical analysis since there are a number of existing strategies that easily can be compared. In early autumn, almost the entire population of the black brant gathers at Izembek Lagoon on the Alaska Peninsula to stage and refuel before the southward migration. There are at least three distinct strategies, with most geese making a spectacular direct migration more than 5000km across the Gulf of Alaska to their wintering grounds in southern Baja California or mainland Mexico. This is a potentially dangerous strategy since foraging is not possible during the overseas passage. Some individuals instead use shorter flights to make a detour along the coast, a longer route that all individuals use for northwards migration in spring. Since flight costs accelerate with increasing body mass, migration by short flights is energetically cheaper than long-distance flights. A small but increasing part of the population has recently begun to winter at Izembek. We investigated this migration under two different suppositions using a dynamic state variable model. First, if the geese are free to make a strategic choice, under what assumptions should they prefer direct migration and under what assumptions should they prefer detour migration/winter residency? Second, provided that the dominating direct migration strategy is optimal, what conditions will force the geese to go for detour migration/winter residency? In the second case the geese may try to follow an optimal direct migration strategy, but stochastic events may force them to choose a suboptimal policy. We also simulated possible effects of global warming. The model suggests that the fuel level at arrival in Izembek and fuel gain rates are key factors and that tail winds must have been reliable in the past, otherwise direct migration could not have evolved. It also suggests that a change to milder winters may promote an unexpectedly abrupt change from long-distance to short-distance migration or winter residency. Finally, it produced a number of predictions that might be testable in the field.  相似文献

Large symbiont-hosting snails of the genus Alviniconcha (Gastropoda: Abyssochrysidae) are among the dominant inhabitants of hydrothermal vents in the Western Pacific and Indian oceans. The genus was originally described as monotypic, but unique DNA sequences for mitochondrial genes revealed six distinct evolutionary lineages that we could not distinguish based on external morphology. Subsumed under the name Alviniconcha hessleri Okutani & Ohta, the distinct allopatric and sympatric lineages have been assigned placeholder epithets that complicate scientific communications. Based on the present multi-gene sequence data, we hereby describe five Alviniconcha species (in the order of their discovery) – A. kojimai sp. nov., A. boucheti sp. nov., A. marisindica sp. nov., A. strummeri sp. nov. and A. adamantis sp. nov. Thus, we restrict application of the name A. hessleri to specimens that are genetically similar (≥95% for COI) to those found at localities in the Mariana Trough. Single distinct Alviniconcha species inhabit vent fields along the Central Indian Ridge, the Mariana volcanic arc, and the Mariana back-arc basin, whereas vents in the Manus, Fiji and Lau back-arc basins may host two or three additional species. Formal recognition of these species facilitates future attempts to assess their physiological differences and symbiont associations. Furthermore, their reported distributions have significant biogeographic implications, affecting estimates of the diversity within and overlap among Indo-Pacific vent localities.
