Aim Classic theory suggests that species‐rich communities should be more resistant to the establishment of exotic species than species‐poor communities. Although this theory predicts that exotic species should be less diverse in regions that contain more native species, macroecological analyses often find that the correlation between exotic and native species richness is positive rather than negative. To reconcile results with theory, we explore to what extent climatic conditions, landscape heterogeneity and anthropogenic disturbance may explain the positive relationship between native and exotic plant richness. Location Catalonia (western Mediterranean region). Methods We integrated floristic records and GIS‐based environmental measures to make spatially explicit 10‐km grid cells. We asked whether the observed positive relationship between native and exotic plant richness (R2= 0.11) resulted from the addition of several negative correlations corresponding to different environmental conditions identified with cluster analysis. Moreover, we directly quantified the importance of common causal effects with a structural equation modelling framework. Results We found no evidence that the relationship between native and exotic plant richness was negative when the comparison was made within environmentally homogeneous groups. Although there were common factors explaining both native and exotic richness, mainly associated with landscape heterogeneity and human pressure, these factors only explained 17.2% of the total correlation. Nevertheless, when the comparison was restricted to native plants associated with human‐disturbed (i.e. ruderal) ecosystems, the relationship was stronger (R2= 0.52) and the fraction explained by common factors increased substantially (58.3%). Main conclusions While our results confirm that the positive correlation between exotic and native plant richness is in part explained by common extrinsic factors, they also highlight the great importance of anthropic factors that – by reducing biotic resistance – facilitate the establishment and spread of both exotic and native plants that tolerate disturbed environments. 相似文献

Obese white adipose tissue is hypoxic but is incapable of inducing compensatory angiogenesis. Brown adipose tissue is highly vascularized, facilitating delivery of nutrients to brown adipocytes for heat production. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms by which white and brown adipocytes respond to hypoxia. Brown adipocytes produced lower amounts of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) than white adipocytes in response to low O(2) but induced higher levels of hypoxia-associated genes. The response of white adipocytes to hypoxia required HIF-1α, but its presence alone was incapable of inducing target gene expression under normoxic conditions. In addition to the HIF-1α targets, hypoxia also induced many inflammatory genes. Exposure of white adipocytes to a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) ligand (troglitazone) attenuated induction of these genes but enhanced expression of the HIF-1α targets. Knockdown of PPARγ in mature white adipocytes prevented the usual robust induction of HIF-1α targets in response to hypoxia. Similarly, knockdown of PPARγ coactivator (PGC) 1β in PGC-1α-deficient brown adipocytes eliminated their response to hypoxia. These data demonstrate that the response of white adipocytes requires HIF-1α but also depends on PPARγ in white cells and the PPARγ cofactors PGC-1α and PGC-1β in brown cells. 相似文献

Aim Peperomia subgenus Tildenia consists of c. 60 species growing in seasonal habitats of Neotropical mountain areas from Mexico to Argentina. The subgenus can be split geographically, with almost equal diversity in the Northern Hemisphere (centred in Mexico and Guatemala) and in the Southern Hemisphere (centred in Peru and Bolivia). Only a few species are known from a limited number of localities between these two hotspots. As such, Tildenia is an ideal candidate with which to test time, direction and mode of migration of high mountain taxa against the background of the ‘Great American Biotic Interchange’. Location The Andes with focus on the Central Andes, and the Mexican mountain chains, especially the Trans‐Mexican Volcanic Belt. Methods To elucidate the spatio‐temporal origin, subsequent colonization and radiation of Tildenia, we combine Bayesian phylogenetics based on the chloroplast trnK–matK–psbA region, georeferenced distribution data, and fossil calibrated molecular dating approaches using both penalized likelihood and relaxed phylogenetics. Reconstruction of the ancestral distribution area was performed using dispersal–vicariance analysis and dispersal–extinction–cladogenesis. Results Peperomia subgenus Tildenia is subdivided into six Andean clades and one Mexican and Central American clade originating from a north/central Peruvian ancestor. Molecular dating approaches converge on a stem age of c. 38 Ma for Tildenia and a mostly Miocene diversification and colonization. Main conclusions We detect a strong correlation between diversification of Tildenia and orogenetic events in the respective distribution centres. In the Andes, distribution was influenced by the Altiplano–Eastern Cordillera System as well as the Amotape‐Huancabamba Zone, where the latter serves as both migration barrier and migration bridge for different clades. In contrast to most studies of high‐elevation taxa, we provide support for a south–north colonization towards Central America and Mexico, and provide additional, independent evidence for the latest view on the timing of the Great American Biotic Interchange. In Mexico, the Trans‐Mexican Volcanic Belt has played a major role in more recent radiations together with climatic oscillation and the formation of refugia. 相似文献

Questions surrounding the chronology, place, and character of the initial human colonization of the Americas are a long-standing focus of debate. Interdisciplinary debate continues over the timing of entry, the rapidity and direction of dispersion, the variety of human responses to diverse habitats, the criteria for evaluating the validity of early sites, and the differences and similarities between colonization in North and South America. Despite recent advances in our understanding of these issues, archaeology still faces challenges in defining interdisciplinary research problems, assessing the reliability of the data, and applying new interpretative models. As the debates and challenges continue, new studies take place and previous research reexamined. Here we discuss recent exploratory excavation at and interdisciplinary data from the Monte Verde area in Chile to further our understanding of the first peopling of the Americas. New evidence of stone artifacts, faunal remains, and burned areas suggests discrete horizons of ephemeral human activity in a sandur plain setting radiocarbon and luminescence dated between at least ~18,500 and 14,500 cal BP. Based on multiple lines of evidence, including sedimentary proxies and artifact analysis, we present the probable anthropogenic origins and wider implications of this evidence. In a non-glacial cold climate environment of the south-central Andes, which is challenging for human occupation and for the preservation of hunter-gatherer sites, these horizons provide insight into an earlier context of late Pleistocene human behavior in northern Patagonia. 相似文献

We have previously discussed the action of 1 α,25-(OH)2D3, (24R) 24,25-(OH)2 D3 and (25S) 25,26-(OH)2D3 on parathyrin secretion by isolated rat parathyroid cells. In this work, we have compared these effects with those obtained with 1 α -OH D3, 25-OH D3 and 1 α -OH D2.In decreasing order, the activities were : 1 α,25-(OH)2D3> 1 α -OH D3 (24R) 24,25-(OH)2D3 > 25-OH D3 > (25S) 25,26(OH)2D3> 1 α -OH D2. The presence of two hydroxyl groups with one hydroxyl group in α position seems to have the higher activity to inhibit the parathyroid secretion. The purpose of the present study was to analyze testosterone secretion from individual purified Leydig cells, using a reverse hemolytic plaque assay (RHPA) as an approach for identifying and characterizing subtypes of Leydig cells. Leydig cells from adult rats and protein A-coated ovine erythrocytes were mixed and incubated for appropriate lengths of time in the presence or absence of antitestosterone antibody, hormones or an analog of cyclic AMP. The slides from RHPA were histochemically stained for 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 beta-HSD). Results show that testosterone secreting cells can be clearly identified by the formation of hemolytic plaques. The proportion of plaque-forming cells increases with incubation time, reaching a plateau at 60 min in the presence of gonadotropin. It was observed that not all 3 beta-HSD positive cells form plaques. It is concluded that the purified Leydig cell population has cells with differential steroidogenic and androgen-secretory activities. 相似文献

Summary The permeability of fenestrated capillaries in an organ is believed to be homogeneous. However, the permeability of fenestrated capillaries in different organs and to various exogenous tracers varies from a complete restriction, as found in the eye (Pino and Essner 1980, 1981; Pino 1985a) to the freely permeable peritubular capillaries of the kidney (Venkatachalam and Karnovsky 1972). In the present report we demonstrate that within any single intestinal villus from the ileo-jejunum of the rat, the permeability of fenestrated capillaries is not uniform. Exogenous hemoglobin (Einstein-Stokes radius [ESR] = 3.2 nm) exits all capillaries at any villar level in less than 5 min. In contrast, all villar capillaries restrict catalase (ESR = 5.2 nm) at 5 min, but by 60 min the tracer is present extravascularly in crypt and lower villar regions. Apical capillaries are slightly permeable to catalase at 2 h, but the bulk of the tracer remains in the lumina. The particulate tracer ferritin (ESR = 6.1 nm) is restricted 3–10 times more by apical capillaries than basal ones and is found in increasing concentration extravascularly at lower villar and crypt levels after 20 min. Following an 18-h circulation, a second dosage of ferritin is restricted by the endothelium at all villar levels. Immunocytochemical localizations of the plasma proteins albumin (ESR = 3.5 nm) and IgG (ESR = 5.5 nm) revealed an apparent lack of restriction at all villar levels. These results demonstrate that apical villar capillaries in the ileojejunum are more restrictive to exogenous molecules with ESR5.2nm. Also, the passage of tracer molecules out of an endothelium alters the subsequent permeability of that vessel. 相似文献

Habitat loss and fragmentation affect species richness in fragmented habitats and can lead to immediate or time‐delayed species extinctions. Asynchronies in extinction and extinction debt between interacting species may have severe effects on ecological networks. However, these effects remain largely unknown. We evaluated the effects of habitat patch and landscape changes on antagonistic butterfly larvae–plant trophic networks in Mediterranean grasslands in which previous studies had shown the existence of extinction debt in plants but not in butterflies. We sampled current species richness of habitat‐specialist and generalist butterflies and vascular plants in 26 grasslands. We assessed the direct effects of historical and current patch and landscape characteristics on species richness and on butterfly larvae–plant trophic network metrics and robustness. Although positive species‐ and interactions–area relationships were found in all networks, structure and robustness was only affected by patch and landscape changes in networks involving the subset of butterfly specialists. Larger patches had more species (butterflies and host plants) and interactions but also more compartments, which decreased network connectance but increased network stability. Moreover, most likely due to the rescue effect, patch connectivity increased host‐plant species (but not butterfly) richness and total links, and network robustness in specialist networks. On the other hand, patch area loss decreased robustness in specialist butterfly larvae–plant networks and made them more prone to collapse against host plant extinctions. Finally, in all butterfly larvae–plant networks we also detected a past patch and landscape effect on network asymmetry, which indicates that there were different extinction rates and extinction debts for butterflies and host plants. We conclude that asynchronies in extinction and extinction debt in butterfly–plant networks provoked by patch and landscape changes caused changes in species richness and network links in all networks, as well as changes in network structure and robustness in specialist networks. 相似文献

Crypt cells—one of the three cell types composing Strombidae digestive tubules—are characterized by the presence of numerous metal-containing phosphate granules termed spherocrystals. We explored the bioaccumulation and detoxification of metals in Strombidae by exposing wild fighting conch Strombus pugilis for 9 days to waterborne CuSO4 and ZnSO4. The total amount of Cu and Zn was determined in the digestive gland and in the rest of the body by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) analyses. The digestive gland spherocrystal metal content was investigated based on the semi-quantitative energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) elemental analysis. ICP analyses of unexposed individuals revealed that 87.0?±?5.9% of the Zn is contained in the digestive gland, where its concentration is 36 times higher than in the rest of the body. Regarding Cu, 25.8?±?16.4% of the metal was located in the digestive gland of the control individuals, increasing to 61.5?±?16.4% in exposed individuals. Both Cu and Zn concentrations in the digestive gland increased after exposures, pointing to a potential role of this organ in the detoxification of these metals. EDX analysis of spherocrystals revealed the presence of Ca, Cl, Fe, K, Mg, P, and Zn in unexposed individuals. No difference was found in the relative proportion of Zn in spherocrystals of exposed versus control individuals. Contrastingly, copper was never detected in the spherocrystals from controls and Zn-exposed individuals, but the relative proportion of Cu in spherocrystals of Cu-exposed individuals varied from 0.3 to 5.7%. The CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM) was induced in the green unicellular alga Chlorella when cells were transferred from high (5% CO2) to low (0.03%) CO2 concentrations. The induction of the CCM correlated with the formation of a starch sheath specifically around the pyrenoid in the chloroplast. With the aim of clarifying whether the starch sheath was involved in the operation of the CCM, we isolated and physiologically characterized a starchless mutant of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, designated as IAA-36. The mutant strain grew as vigorously as the wild type under high and low CO2 concentrations, continuous light and a 12 h light/12 h dark photoperiod. The CO2 requirement for half-maximal rates of photosynthesis [K0.5(CO2)] decreased from 40 μM to 2–3 μM of CO2 when both wild type and mutant were switched from high to low CO2. The high affinity for inorganic carbon indicates that the IAA-36 mutant is able to induce a fully active CCM. Since the mutant does not have the pyrenoid starch sheath, we conclude that the sheath is not involved in the operation of the CCM in Chlorella cells. 相似文献
