The possible structure of human blood-group antigens, as found in cochlear hair cells of 3-day-old rats, is suggested. Data were obtained from immunocytochemical studies using 77 antibodies against the major human blood group antigens of the ABO, H, I and Lewis genetic systems. Neither the anti-A-related nor the anti-Lewis-related antibodies showed any positive immunoreaction on hair cells. In contrast, anti-B, anti-AB and anti-H antibodies displayed specific positive immunoreactive patterns on the hair cells. The results suggest that, in immature hair cells, two main glycoconjugate structures of the lactoseries are present: H type 2 antigen, which is the precursor of the B type 2 antigen, and the B type 2 antigen itself. Similar H and B carbohydrate structures have been reported in rat olfactory receptors. The type 2 glycoconjugates carrying these H and B antigens of auditive and olfactory receptors are resistant to fixation and paraffin embedding, suggesting that they might be glycoproteins. These auditive and olfactory H and B antigens must be different from the B-related antigens that are expressed by pseudo-unipolar neurons of rat posterior root ganglia, that are built from type 4 core chains, and that are destroyed by routine paraffin embedding procedures. 相似文献

The behaviour of β-1,3-glucanase activity during Aspergillus nidulans autolysis was studied in a basal medium and in the same medium supplemented with 0.5 g l-1 of microcrystalline cellulose, laminarin, pectin, seedling of Lycopersicum esculentum extract, chitin and xylan respectively. In any case β-1,3-glucanase activity was detected in the culture fluid before the onset of the autolysis, but afterwards a progressive increase of β-1,3-glucanase activity took place with incubation time. In the media supplemented with pectin and seedling of Lycopersicum esculentum extract higher activity in the first days of autolysis was found. The activity at the end of the studied process by sample was 2.5, 2.1, 2.5, 1.9, 2.2, 2.3 and 2.3 U, and the specific activity 83, 53, 85, 55, 64, 90 and 53 mU mg-1 of protein for each medium respectively. The β-1,3-glucanase activity in Aspergillus nidulans seems to be related to autolysis and not to the presence of different substances in the culture medium. The behaviour of β-1,3-glucanase activity during the degradative process was followed by FPLC ion-exchange chromatography. Three proteins (I, II, III) with β-1,3-glucanase activity were separated and quantified. These proteins have similar behaviour in all the media. Proteins I and II increase progressively with incubation time but protein III is only present at the first and last days of autolysis. 相似文献

Tropical montane communities host the world's highest beta diversity of birds, a phenomenon usually attributed to community turnover caused by changes in biotic and abiotic factors along elevation gradients. Yet, empirical data on most biotic factors are lacking. Nest predation is thought to be especially important because it appears to be common and can change selective pressures underlying life history traits, which can alter competitive interactions. We monitored 2538 nests, 338 of which had known nest predators, to evaluate if nest predation changes along a tropical elevational gradient. We found that nest predation decreased with elevation, reflecting the loss of lowland predators that do not tolerate colder climates. We found different “super” nest predators at each elevation that accounted for a high percentage of events, suggesting that selection pressures exerted by nest predator communities may be less diffuse than has been hypothesized, at least for birds nesting in the understory. 相似文献

Sex determination (SD) shows huge variation among fish and a high evolutionary rate, as illustrated by the Pleuronectiformes (flatfishes). This order is characterized by its adaptation to demersal life, compact genomes and diversity of SD mechanisms. Here, we assembled the Solea senegalensis genome, a flatfish of great commercial value, into 82 contigs (614 Mb) combining long- and short-read sequencing, which were next scaffolded using a highly dense genetic map (28,838 markers, 21 linkage groups), representing 98.9% of the assembly. Further, we established the correspondence between the assembly and the 21 chromosomes by using BAC-FISH. Whole genome resequencing of six males and six females enabled the identification of 41 single nucleotide polymorphism variants in the follicle stimulating hormone receptor (fshr) consistent with an XX/XY SD system. The observed sex association was validated in a broader independent sample, providing a novel molecular sexing tool. The fshr gene displayed differential expression between male and female gonads from 86 days post-fertilization, when the gonad is still an undifferentiated primordium, concomitant with the activation of amh and cyp19a1a, testis and ovary marker genes, respectively, in males and females. The Y-linked fshr allele, which included 24 nonsynonymous variants and showed a highly divergent 3D protein structure, was overexpressed in males compared to the X-linked allele at all stages of gonadal differentiation. Three new Ecuadorian species of Axinaea (Melastomataceae) are described: Axinaea flava, A. glauca, and A.lawessonii. All three species are endemic to southern Ecuador. Axinaea flava and A.glauca grow in the transition zone between montane forest and pbramo. They share characters such as shrubby habit, dense to moderate pubescence and coriaceous, rigid, erect leaves, which may be related to their high altitude habitat. Axinaea flava is the only species of the genus with a yellow corolla. Axinaea glauca, a shrub less than 1 m high, is the smallest Axinaea species known. Field observations show that these two species have a restricted habitat and their known populations are small, probably less than 100 individuals. The third species, A.lawessonii, grows in wet montane forests. It can grow as a shrub or a slender tree and its leaves are glabrous and less rigid than those of A.flava and A.glauca, characters which are probably a consequence of the more humid and benign habitat. Axinaea lawessonii is the only species of the genus in which the leaf margins have uncinate teeth. The species is rather frequent in southern Ecuador and has been collected in a dozen localities, most of which are within the Podocarpus National Park. 相似文献

A statistical methodology for estimating dataset size requirements for classifying microarray data using learning curves is introduced. The goal is to use existing classification results to estimate dataset size requirements for future classification experiments and to evaluate the gain in accuracy and significance of classifiers built with additional data. The method is based on fitting inverse power-law models to construct empirical learning curves. It also includes a permutation test procedure to assess the statistical significance of classification performance for a given dataset size.
