We studied the novel weapons hypothesis in the context of the broadly distributed tree species Eucalyptus globulus. We evaluated the hypothesis that this Australian species would produce stronger inhibitory effects on species from its non‐native range than on species from its native range.Location

We compared species composition, richness and height of plant communities in 20 paired plots underneath E. globulus individuals and open areas in two sites within its native range and each non‐native region. We also compared effects of litter leachates of E. globulus on root growth of seedlings in species from Australia, Chile, the U.S.A. and India.Results
In all sites and countries, the plant community under E. globulus canopies had lower species richness than did the plant community in open areas. However, the reduction was much greater in the non‐native ranges: species richness declined by an average of 51% in the eight non‐native sites versus 8% in the two native Australian sites. The root growth of 15 out of 21 species from the non‐native range were highly suppressed by E. globulus litter leachates, whereas the effect of litter leachate varied from facilitation to suppression for six species native to Australia. The mean reduction in root growth for Australian plants was significantly lower than for plants from the U.S.A., Chile and India.Main conclusions
Our results show biogeographical differences in the impact of an exotic species on understorey plant communities. Consistent with the novel weapons hypothesis, our findings suggest that different adaptations of species from the native and non‐native ranges to biochemical compounds produced by an exotic species may play a role in these biogeographical differences. 相似文献32.

A statistical methodology for estimating dataset size requirements for classifying microarray data using learning curves is introduced. The goal is to use existing classification results to estimate dataset size requirements for future classification experiments and to evaluate the gain in accuracy and significance of classifiers built with additional data. The method is based on fitting inverse power-law models to construct empirical learning curves. It also includes a permutation test procedure to assess the statistical significance of classification performance for a given dataset size. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of adiponectin (APN) in a mouse model of laser induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV). We have shown by immunohistochemistry that the expression of APN, adiponectin receptor 1, adiponectin receptor 2 and T cadherin gradually increased from day 1 to day 7 post-laser in laser treated mice compared to controls. Recombinant APN (rAPN) was injected intraperitoneally (i.p., 25 microg/mouse) or intravitreally (2 microg/eye) in lasered mice. Another set of lasered mice received APN peptide via i.p. (75 microg/mouse) or intravitreal (30 microg/eye) route. Control mice received a similar treatment with PBS, control protein or control peptide after laser treatment. We found that in the i.p. and intravitreal injection of rAPN resulted in 78% and 68% inhibition respectively in the size of CNV complex compared to control mice. Similar results were observed when APN peptide was injected intravitreally or i.p. Treatment with rAPN or the peptide resulted in decreased levels of vascular endothelial growth factor. Thus, APN inhibited choroidal angiogenesis and may have therapeutic implications in the treatment of wet age related macular degeneration. 相似文献

TGF-β subtypes are expressed in tissues derived from cranial neural crest cells during early mouse craniofacial development. TGF-β signaling is critical for mediating epithelial-mesenchymal interactions, including those vital for tooth morphogenesis. However, it remains unclear how TGF-β signaling contributes to the terminal differentiation of odontoblast and dentin formation during tooth morphogenesis. Towards this end, we generated mice with conditional inactivation of the Tgfbr2 gene in cranial neural crest derived cells. Odontoblast differentiation was substantially delayed in the Tgfbr2fl/fl;Wnt1-Cre mutant mice at E18.5. Following kidney capsule transplantation, Tgfbr2 mutant tooth germs expressed a reduced level of Col1a1 and Dspp and exhibited defects including decreased dentin thickness and absent dentinal tubules. In addition, the expression of the intermediate filament nestin was decreased in the Tgfbr2 mutant samples. Significantly, exogenous TGF-β2 induced nestin and Dspp expression in dental pulp cells in the developing tooth organ. Our data suggest that TGF-β signaling controls odontoblast maturation and dentin formation during tooth morphogenesis. 相似文献

In maize, Zea mays L., the timing of vegetative phase transition from juvenile to adult vegetative phases can be modified through selection. A reduction in the juvenile vegetative phase has been associated with resistance to diseases and pests. The major maize pest in temperate areas is Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) and in Europe Sesamia nonagrioides Lefebvre. The objective of our study was to determine the effects of divergent selection for the timing of vegetative phase transition in maize on resistance to corn borers. Three cycles of divergent selection for early and late phase transition in a field corn synthetic and in a sweet corn population were evaluated separately under S. nonagrioides and O. nubilalis artificial infestation. For the field corn experiment, yield and moisture improved with selection for phase transition in both directions, but improvement was due to artifacts of selection, rather than to the change in phase transition. There were no correlated responses for corn borer damage, yield, or grain moisture due to selection for the timing of vegetative phase transition. In the sweet corn experiment, selection for the timing of vegetative phase transition had no significant effects on corn borer damage in sweet corn harvested at the fresh stage. Our results do not support the use of phase transition as an indirect criterion for improving resistance to corn borers in maize. The relationship between phase transition and pest resistance reported by other studies could depend on the genotypes or could be too weak to be detected in a selection program with wild-type maize. 相似文献
