Physiological telemetry and proximate tissue analyses were used to assess energy expended by chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta on various behaviours during spawning in Kanaka Creek, British Columbia, Canada, and results were compared with published data on Fraser River sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka , the only other species for which both types of measurements have been taken. Chum salmon arrived at the spawning grounds with body energy densities of 4·84 MJ kg−1 in males and 4·62 MJ kg−1 in females, lower than most sockeye salmon populations, and died with energy densities of c . 4 MJ kg−1, similar to that observed in sockeye salmon and other salmonids. Moisture levels generally increased in body tissues over the spawning life, particularly in female gonads, and lipid levels decreased. Declines in protein observed over the spawning life of other Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus sp. were less evident in Kanaka Creek chum salmon. Holding behaviour constituted the dominant component of the activity schedule and energy budget of both sexes. After holding, the most expensive behaviours were nest digging in females and aggressive displays in males. Dominant males expended the most energy on behaviours each day, as indexed by oxygen consumption (3600 mgO2 kg−1), while satellite males expended nearly as much (3504 mgO2 kg−1) but females expended considerably less (2327 mgO2 kg−1). Kanaka chum salmon engaged more frequently in energetically expensive reproductive behaviours than Stuart River sockeye salmon.  相似文献

In experimental glomerulonephritis, inhibition of renal prostaglandin (PG) synthesis by nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) moderates proteinuria, yet can induce harmful effects on renal blood flow and Na+ - K+ - water balance thereby implicating 1 or more prostanoid receptor subtypes. We investigated the role of the PGE2 EP1 receptor in nephritis since it is expressed in the glomerulus, collecting duct and vasculature in which its activity might contribute to adaptive or maladaptive responses. Accordingly, a mouse model of accelerated antiglomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) nephrotoxic serum (NTS) nephritis was induced in mice with targeted-deletion of the EP1 receptor (EP1-/-). Proteinuria was similar between wild-type (wt) and EP1-/- NTS groups, thus negating a role for this subtype in modulating the glomerular permeability barrier in this model of anti-GBM NTS. However, overall renal damage was more acute in NTS EP1-/- mice, as evidenced by the degree of glomerular mesangial matrix expansion and the frequency of tubular dilatations. These changes in renal pathology were accompanied by stronger impairment of renal function in NTS EP1-/- mice, such that levels of serum creatinine, urea, Na+, and K+ were each significantly higher than those observed in NTS wt mice. Lastly, compared with wt mice, induction of NTS more severely reduced urine osmolality and body mass in EP1-/- mice. Taken together, the increased renal impairment seen in NTS EP1-/- mice suggests that the EP1 subtype plays a compensatory role in the context of acute nephritis.  相似文献

Summary The effect of the carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1(CPT1) inhibitor, Etomoxir, on glucose oxidation rates was determined in ischemic hearts reperfused in the presence of fatty acids. Isolated working rat hearts were perfused with 11 mM (14C)-glucose and 1.2 mM palmitate at a 15 cm H2O preload, 80 mm Hg afterload. Hearts were subjected to either 60 min aerobic perfusion, or 15 min work followed by 25 min global ischemia then 60 min of aerobic reperfusion. Steady state glucose oxidation rates in reperfused ischemic hearts were not significantly different from non-ischemic hearts. If 10–9 M Etomoxir was added immediately prior to reperfusion no significant change in glucose oxidation occurred. Addition of 10–8 M and 10–6 M Etomoxir, however, significantly increased glucose oxidation. Etomoxir also significantly improved recovery of mechanical function at a concentration of 10i–8 M or greater. As we previously reported, no significant improvement of function was seen when 10–9 M Etomoxir was added to the perfusate (Lopaschuk GD et al., Circ Res 63: 1036–1043, 1988). Long chain acylcarnitine levels were significantly reduced in the presence of both 10–9 M and 10–8 M Etomoxir. These data demonstrate that the beneficial effect of Etomoxir on reperfusion recovery of ischemic hearts is not due to a lowering of long chain acylcarnitine levels. Etomoxir may improve recovery of function by overcoming fatty acid inhibition of glucose oxidation.  相似文献

A chemically defined medium satisfactory for growth of a number of laboratory strains and recent isolates ofNeisseria gonorrhoeae has been devised. It contains inorganic salts, dextrose, guanine, cytosine, B-vitamin supplement, and the following amino acids:l-arginine,l-aspartic acid,l-cystine,l-isoleucine,l-leucine,l-proline,l-threonine, andl-valine.Nine of the eleven strains grew satisfactorily in this medium without being provided supplemental CO2 during incubation, and a tenth strain grew in the medium supplemented with glutamine. No single B-vitamin or purine or pyrimidine base was essential for growth of any of the strains, but some combinations of them were stimulatory. Riboflavin, however, was inhibitory. The strains showed variations in requirements for amino acids. The amino acids which were either essential or stimulatory for one or more of the strains were included in the medium. Those to which the strains responded differently were used at concentrations intermediate between those optimal for growth of one strain and inhibitory for another. Conventional agar was inhibitory, but a purified agar, having a gel strength twice that of conventional agar, was satisfactory.
