Climatic changes result in an increased in mean temperature and in a higher incidence of extreme weather events such as heat and cold waves. For ectotherms, such as insect parasitoids, the ability to remain active under extreme climatic conditions is a significant key to fitness. The body size of individuals, and in particular their surface to volume ratio, may play a role in their resistance to thermal conditions. The thermal tolerances are investigated of two closely‐related sympatric parasitoid species [Aphidius avenae Haliday and Aphidius rhopalosiphi De Stefani‐Perez (Hymenoptera: Aphidiinae)] that have a similar ecology but differ in body size and phenologies. The critical thermal limits of individuals are assessed in both sexes of each parasitoid species and the influence of surface–volume ratios on their thermal tolerances. Aphidius avenae is less resistant to low temperatures and more resistant to high temperatures than A. rhopalosiphi. The lower surface to volume ratio of A. avenae individuals may help them to remain active in summer when experiencing heat waves. However, body size is not the sole factor that plays a role in differences of thermal tolerance between species and body size may not be an adaptation to extreme temperatures but rather a by‐product of developmental regulation. Closely‐related sympatric species from the same ecological guild can have different thermal tolerances that may allow them to occur within the same habitat. The present study also highlights the importance of clearly defining how to measure critical thermal limits to determine the thermal tolerance of a species. 相似文献

Bracken, ants and extrafloral nectaries. III. How insect herbivores avoid ant predation 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract. 1. Ants (Myrmica spp. and Formica lemani) visiting the extrafloral nectaries of bracken, Pteridium aquilinum, imposed heavy mortality on caterpillars of a novel moth species experimentally introduced onto bracken fronds. However, the exclusion of ants from bracken fronds had no significant effect on adapted bracken-feeding herbivores in Britain.
2. The feeding stages of British bracken-feeding insects are immune to, or can largely avoid, predation by ants in a variety of ways. Gall formers and miners cannot be attacked by these ants. Two other species hide, one inside tied leaves, the other in a mass of 'spittle'. Another group of species jumps away from, or falls off the plant when touched by ants. Sawfly caterpillars in the genera Strongylogaster, Aneugmenus and Tenthredo have viscous, distasteful haemolymph that repels ants.
3. No species of bracken herbivore has an absolute temporal refuge from ants; during their development they all overlap with ants to some degree.
4. Ant predation appears to have played a significant role in determining the contemporary structure of British bracken-feeding insect communities. Distasteful haemolymph in sawfly caterpillars may have evolved in response to selection from ant predation. Other species may fortuitously possess characteristics, evolved in response to a variety of selective forces, that also reduce the impact of ants; without such characteristics, however, we postulate that they would be unable to live on this plant. An absence of external, foliage feeding Lepidoptera early in the spring, a high proportion of sawfly species, and a high proportion of gall-formers and miners may all be characteristics of the bracken herbivore community which have been influenced by ant predation. 相似文献

Monitoring changes in vegetation growth has been the subject of considerable research during the past several decades, because of the important role of vegetation in regulating the terrestrial carbon cycle and the climate system. In this study, we combined datasets of satellite‐derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and climatic factors to analyze spatio‐temporal patterns of changes in vegetation growth and their linkage with changes in temperature and precipitation in temperate and boreal regions of Eurasia (> 23.5°N) from 1982 to 2006. At the continental scale, although a statistically significant positive trend of average growing season NDVI is observed (0.5 × 10?3 year?1, P = 0.03) during the entire study period, there are two distinct periods with opposite trends in growing season NDVI. Growing season NDVI has first significantly increased from 1982 to 1997 (1.8 × 10?3 year?1, P < 0.001), and then decreased from 1997 to 2006 (?1.3 × 10?3 year?1, P = 0.055). This reversal in the growing season NDVI trends over Eurasia are largely contributed by spring and summer NDVI changes. Both spring and summer NDVI significantly increased from 1982 to 1997 (2.1 × 10?3 year?1, P = 0.01; 1.6 × 10?3 year?1P < 0.001, respectively), but then decreased from 1997 to 2006, particularly summer NDVI which may be related to the remarkable decrease in summer precipitation (?2.7 mm yr?1, P = 0.009). Further spatial analyses supports the idea that the vegetation greening trend in spring and summer that occurred during the earlier study period 1982–1997 was either stalled or reversed during the following study period 1997–2006. But the turning point of vegetation NDVI is found to vary across different regions. 相似文献

- 1 The literature on bark‐stripping by red deer Cervus elaphus in Europe is reviewed to reveal quantitative variation in this behaviour and relate it to deer density and local characteristics such as dominant tree species, occurrence of artificial feeding, altitude, region and size of the study site. We also review the importance of bark in red deer diets over the seasons and discuss the causes of bark‐stripping, focusing on the significance of bark as food.
- 2 Over the 36 sites examined, the rate of bark‐stripping was highly variable (from 0 to 84% of susceptible trees debarked), with less damage in Scotland than in other European sites for which bark‐stripping rates were higher at high red deer density. Altitude, the size of the study site, the number of dominant tree species and the occurrence of artificial feeding do not significantly relate to the rate of bark‐stripping.
- 3 Bark sometimes made up a large proportion of red deer diet (> 10%), especially in areas with severe winters (high levels of snow), whereas in study sites with mild winters, bark was practically not eaten at all.
- 4 These results suggest that severe bark‐stripping could be related to a reduction in food resource availability. This food availability hypothesis needs to be better documented, dealing particularly with the possible interaction between food availability and red deer density.

We report on the characterization and mapping of 76 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers for Lolium perenne. These markers are publicly available or obtained either from genomic libraries enriched for SSR motifs or L. perenne expressed sequence tag (EST) clones. Four L. perenne mapping populations were used to map the SSR markers. A consensus linkage map of the four mapping populations containing 65 of the SSR markers is presented, together with primer information and a quality score indicating the usefulness of the SSR marker in different populations. The SSR markers identified all seven L. perenne linkage groups. 相似文献

Summary The male cells in the ovotestis of hibernating snails undergo multiplication when the temperature of the environment is raised from 5°C to 25°C. If the temperature is maintained at 25°C for 4 weeks the process of spermatogenesis is completed but the rate of spermatogenesis (DNA synthesis) starts decreasing from the 3rd week (Table 1; Fig. 1). Brain ablation in hibernating snails maintained at 25°C causes a significant increase in DNA synthesis exclusively in male cells of the ovotestis. This suggests that the brain exerts an inhibitory influence on spermatogenic multiplication. This influence is effective only during the first and the fourth week of exposure of hibernating snails to 25°C (Fig. 1; Table 1) indicating the existence of an endogenous cyclical control. Spermiogenesis is, however, not affected by brain extirpation (Fig. 4 A,B,C). When reimplanted in the head haemocoel the brain appears normal histologically (Fig. 5 A,B) and it reestablishes the inhibitory influence on DNA synthesis in the ovotestis only during the first day of temperature-induction. During the 1st, 3rd and 4th week the reimplanted brain, deprived of its neural connections, fails to exert its inhibitory influence suggesting that for this influence to function neural connections to the brain are essential. Surprisingly, the implanted brain seems to inhibit DNA synthesis during the 2nd week of temperature-induction (Table 1). These experiments show that the brain control temperature-induced spermatogenic multiplication in the ovotestis in snails at the onset of hibernation and this control is exerted by one or more inhibitory factors originating from the brain which may function in concert or independently to produce the neuroendocrine effect. It seems therefore justified to consider spermatogenesis in hibernating snails as being neuroendocrinologically controlled. 相似文献

Unlike other tribes of Gentianaceae, Exaceae have so far received little attention regarding their karyological evolution. Indeed, only 35 chromosome number counts (19 species) have been referenced to date, representing only a negligible fraction of the tribal diversity. In this paper, we performed an intensive chromosome count on material collected in the field (South and central Africa, plus Madagascar), encompassing 155 populations and c. 60 species from four genera of Exaceae, including Exacum, Ornichia, Sebaea and Tachiadenus. Fifty nine species (14 Exacum, one Ornichia, 42 Sebaea and two Tachiadenus) were examined for the first time, revealing a broad set of chromosome numbers (2n = 18, 28, 32, 36, 42, 56) and the occurrence of polyploid systems within Exacum and Sebaea. These results allow us to postulate x = 7, 8 or 9 as possible base chromosome numbers for Exaceae and emphasize the importance of both dysploidy and polyploidy processes in the evolution of the tribe. Finally, chromosome numbers appear to be associated to some morphological or geographical traits, suggesting new systematic combinations and likely active speciation patterns in the group. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 556–566. 相似文献
