The ultrastructural stages of female gametogenesis are describedin a Mediterranean marine bivalve, Pinna nobiiis. Firstly, theprocess of oocyte formation is analysed and the formation ofthe yolk granules is discussed. Secondly the degeneration ofoocytes is described and seems to be most common in vitello-genicoocytes. The evolution of the oocyte reserves is particular;they form a dense globulose mass in the acinar lumen which willthen appear in the cytoplasm content of auxiliary cells. Duringearly stages of oogenesis the oocyte is completely surroundedby several layers of auxiliary cells. On formation of the viteliinecoat around the oocyte, the auxiliary cells are restricted tothe stalk and contact is maintained by desmosomes. Interdigitationphenomena are observed. The auxiliary cells appear to play anintegral role in development of the oocyte. Their functionsare the phagocytosis and intracellular digestion of productsoriginating from oocyte degeneration; this function can permita transfer of precursors necessary to vitellogenesis; they havealso a synthetic activity and they accumulate reserves in theircytoplasm, as glycogen and lipids, which can be employed byvitellogenic oocytes. 1. The number of hosts attacked as a function of host density is considered to be an important characteristic of parasitoid behaviour and is used to estimate key parameters such as handling time and ‘instantaneous rate of discovery’. However, little has been done to validate functional response models by direct observation of parasitoid oviposition behaviour. 2. Tamarixia radiata is the most promising parasitoid for biological control attacking Diaphorina citri. Mass rearing and augmentative release seen as a potential strategy for suppression of D. citri has been documented in abandoned citrus, residential areas, and organic groves. Nevertheless, parasitism rates in culture and in the field are only moderate, leading to questions about oviposition behaviour in response to host density. 3. Behaviours of gravid T. radiata females presented with susceptible host instars were categorised and documented by direct observation for 30 min and by camera recordings made over 12 h. Frequency of searching and antennating increased with host density during the 30 min. Probing rejection rates and search duration increased significantly with host density over 12 h. These factors resulted in significantly lower fecundity than expected, possibly due to host mark‐mediated deterrence within the small searching area. Females took approximately 3.6–4.2 min to probe and parasitise a host regardless of host density and exposure duration. These results were markedly different from the 52.2 min estimated from the functional response equation. 4. Further experiments are required to assess the range and persistence of the putative host‐marking pheromone, and to better understand the relationship between functional response parameters and actual behaviour. 相似文献

The widely accepted phylogenctic position of Chondrichthyes as the sister group to all other living gnathostomes makes biomechanical analyses of this group of special significance for estimates of skull function in early jawed vertebrates. We review key findings of recent experimental research on the feeding mechanisms of living elasmobranchs with respect to our understanding of jaw depression mechanisms in gnathostome vertebrates. We introduce the possibility that the ancestral jaw depression mechanism in gnathostomes was mediated by the coracomandibularis muscle and that for hyoid depression by the coracohyoideus muscle, as in modern Chondrichthyes and possibly placoderms. This mechanism of jaw depression appears to have been replaced by the sternohyoideus (homologous to the coracohyoideus) coupling in Osteichthycs following the split of this lineage from Chondrichthyes. Concurrent with the replacement of the branchiomandibularis (homologous to the coracomandibularis) coupling by the sternohyoideus coupling as the dominant mechanism of jaw depression in Osteichthyes was the fusion and shift in attachment of the intcrhyoideus and intermandibularis muscles (producing the protractor hyoideus muscle, mistakenly refereed to as the geniohyoideus), which resulted in a more diversified role of the sternohyoideus coupling in Osteichthyes. The coracohyoideus coupling appears to have been already present in vertebrates where it functioned in hyoid depression, as in modern Chondrichthyes, before it acquired the additional role of jaw depression in Osteichthyes. 相似文献

The immediate effects of tillage on protected soil C and N pools and on trace gas emissions from soils at precultivation levels of native C remain largely unknown. We measured the response to cultivation of CO2 and N2O emissions and associated environmental factors in a previously uncultivated U.S. Midwest Alfisol with C concentrations that were indistinguishable from those in adjacent late successional forests on the same soil type (3.2%). Within 2 days of initial cultivation in 2002, tillage significantly (P=0.001, n=4) increased CO2 fluxes from 91 to 196 mg CO2‐C m?2 h?1 and within the first 30 days higher fluxes because of cultivation were responsible for losses of 85 g CO2‐C m?2. Additional daily C losses were sustained during a second and third year of cultivation of the same plots at rates of 1.9 and 1.0 g C m?2 day?1, respectively. Associated with the CO2 responses were increased soil temperature, substantially reduced soil aggregate size (mean weight diameter decreased 35% within 60 days), and a reduction in the proportion of intraaggregate, physically protected light fraction organic matter. Nitrous oxide fluxes in cultivated plots increased 7.7‐fold in 2002, 3.1‐fold in 2003, and 6.7‐fold in 2004 and were associated with increased soil NO3? concentrations, which approached 15 μg N g?1. Decreased plant N uptake immediately after tillage, plus increased mineralization rates and fivefold greater nitrifier enzyme activity, likely contributed to increased NO3? concentrations. Our results demonstrate that initial cultivation of a soil at precultivation levels of native soil C immediately destabilizes physical and microbial processes related to C and N retention in soils and accelerates trace gas fluxes. Policies designed to promote long‐term C sequestration may thus need to protect soils from even occasional cultivation in order to preserve sequestered C. 相似文献

The effect of red light (660 nm), far-red light (730 nm) and dark treatment on the subsequent enzyme activity in homogenates of Avena coleoptiles was investigated. The activities of succinic dehydrogenase (SDH), lactic dehydro-genase (LDH) and glucose-6-P dehydrogenase (GDH) were investigated. The activity of SDH was greatest in material receiving continuous darkness. LDH and GDH activity was stimulated by both light treatments compared with the dark values. Little or no difference in enzyme activity was found using either a single 15 min flash of light or continuous light for 24 h. Admixtures of extracts from dark treated and light treated material in a 1:1 ratio gave unexpected levels of enzyme activity. SYNOPSIS. The ultrastructure of the known tissue stages of Cryptosporidium wrairi Vetterling, Jervis, Merrill, and Sprinz, 1971 parasitizing the ileum of guinea pigs is described. Young trophozoites are surrounded by 4 unit membranes, the outer 2 of host origin, the inner 2 the pellicle of the parasite. Each trophozoite contains a vesicular nucleus with a large nucleolus. Its cytoplasm contains ribosomes, but eventually fills with cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. As the trophozoite matures the area of attachment of the parasite to the host cell becomes vacuolated, with vertical membranous folds. It is apparent that the parasite acquires nourishment from the host cell thru this area of attachment. As schizonts develop, (a) multiple nuclei appear, (b) the endoplasmic reticulum enlarges, (c) the attachment zone increases in area, (d) large vacuoles, which develop as endocytotic vesicles in the attachment area, are found in the cytoplasm and (e) the inner unit membrane of the parasite pellicle is resorbed around the sides of the developing schizont. Following nuclear division, merozoites develop from the schizont by budding. Merozoites have an ultrastructure similar to that described for other coccidia except that no mitochondria, micropores, or subpellicular tubules were observed. Merozoites penetrate the epithelial cell causing invagination of the microvillar membrane and lysing it. No unit membrane is formed between the parasite and the host cell. However, the cell produces one or 2 dense bands adjacent to the parasite attachment area. The macrogamete contains a nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, attachment zone, and large vacuoles. It also contains a variety of granules, some of which are polysaccharide. The immature microgametocyte contains multiple compact nuclei. No mature microgametocytes or zygotes were found. 相似文献

Leaf mesophyll of Medicago sativa (L.) was investigated to determinethe roles of cell division and cell expansion in tissue growth.Samples of leaf tissue were macerated, stained, and squashed.The slides were studied under a phase microscope to determinethe percentage of recently divided cells and the average celldiameter for leaflets of varying lengths. Cell division wasgreatest in young leaflets and virtually ceased as a leaf lengthof 12 mm was attained. For leaflets less than 12 mm in length,the rate of increase in cell size appeared to be inversely associatedto the degree of cell division. For alfalfa leaflets greaterthan 12 mm in length, the mean cell size increased in proportionto leaf length since cell division had virtually ceased. 相似文献

Abstract: The hypothesis that conodonts are vertebrates rests solely on evidence of soft tissue anatomy. This has been corroborated by microstructural, topological and developmental evidence of homology between conodont and vertebrate hard tissues. However, these conclusions have been reached on the basis of evidence from highly derived euconodont taxa and the degree to which they are representative of plesiomorphic euconodonts remains an open question. Furthermore, the range of variation in tissue types comprising the euconodont basal body has been used to establish a hypothesis of developmental plasticity early in the phylogeny of the clade, and a model of diminishing potentiality in the evolution of development systems. The microstructural fabrics of the basal tissues of the earliest euconodonts (presumed to be the most plesiomorphic) are examined to test these two hypotheses. It is found that the range of microstructural variation observed hitherto was already apparent among plesiomorphic euconodonts. Thus, established histological data are representative of the most plesiomorphic euconodonts. However, although there is evidence of a range in microstructural fabrics, these are compatible with the dentine tissue system alone, and the degree of variation is compatible with that seen in clades of comparable diversity. 相似文献
