1. The number of hosts attacked as a function of host density is considered to be an important characteristic of parasitoid behaviour and is used to estimate key parameters such as handling time and ‘instantaneous rate of discovery’. However, little has been done to validate functional response models by direct observation of parasitoid oviposition behaviour. 2. Tamarixia radiata is the most promising parasitoid for biological control attacking Diaphorina citri. Mass rearing and augmentative release seen as a potential strategy for suppression of D. citri has been documented in abandoned citrus, residential areas, and organic groves. Nevertheless, parasitism rates in culture and in the field are only moderate, leading to questions about oviposition behaviour in response to host density. 3. Behaviours of gravid T. radiata females presented with susceptible host instars were categorised and documented by direct observation for 30 min and by camera recordings made over 12 h. Frequency of searching and antennating increased with host density during the 30 min. Probing rejection rates and search duration increased significantly with host density over 12 h. These factors resulted in significantly lower fecundity than expected, possibly due to host mark‐mediated deterrence within the small searching area. Females took approximately 3.6–4.2 min to probe and parasitise a host regardless of host density and exposure duration. These results were markedly different from the 52.2 min estimated from the functional response equation. 4. Further experiments are required to assess the range and persistence of the putative host‐marking pheromone, and to better understand the relationship between functional response parameters and actual behaviour. 相似文献

To study the effect of root-zone pH on characteristic responsesof -fed plants, soybeans (Glycine max {L.}Merr. cv. Ransom) were grown in flowing solution culture for21 d on four sources of N (1.0 mol m3 , 0.67 mol m3 plus 0.33 mol m3, 0.33 mol m3 plus 0.67 mol m3 , and 1.0 mol m3) with nutrient solutions maintained at pH 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, and 4.5. Amino acid concentration increased inplants grown with as the sole source of N at all pH levels. Total amino acid concentration in the rootsof -fed plants was 8 to 10 times higher than in -fed plants, with asparagine accounting for more than 70% of the total in the roots of these plants.The concentration of soluble carbohydrates in the leaves of-fed plants was greater than that of -fed plants, but was lower in roots of -fed plants, regardless of pH. Starch concentration was only slightlyaffected by N source or root-zone pH. At all levels of pH tested,organic acid concentration in leaves was much lower when was the sole N source than when all or part of theN was supplied as . Plants grown with mixed plus N sources were generally intermediate between - and -fed plants. Thus, changes in tissue compositioncharacteristic of nutrition when root-zone pH was maintained at 4.5 and growth was reduced, still occurredwhen pH was maintained at 5.0 or above, where growth was notaffected. We investigated two predictions regarding the incidence of tail regeneration in lizards for three populations of brown anoles exposed to varying predation levels from the same predator (cats). Firstly although inefficient predators are likely to increase the incidence of regenerated tails (i.e. lizards can escape through tail autotomy), highly efficient predators will kill and eat the lizard and thus leave no evidence of autotomy. At the site with no cats, only 4% of anoles demonstrated signs of tail regeneration. This value was not significantly different from the site where feral cats (i.e. ‘efficient’ predators that would capture prey to eat, as supported by behavioural observation) were present (7%). By contrast, 25% of anoles present at the site with pet cats (well‐fed domesticated cats that caught and played with anoles, i.e. were ‘inefficient’ predators) exhibited regenerated tails. Secondly, more obvious lizards are more susceptible to predation attempts. Supporting this hypothesis, our data indicate a higher incidence of regenerated tails (28%) was recorded amongst adult males (which are territorial, occupying exposed positions) compared to females and subadult males (17%) or juveniles (1%). Predation of Rhopalosiphum padi (Homoptera: Aphididae) by polyphagous predatory arthropods during the aphids' pre-peak period in spring barley 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Polyphagous predators (e.g. Araneae, Carabidae and Staphylinidae), collected from spring barley fields during 1981-85, were examined by either gut dissection or a R. padi-specific antiserum in enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in order to detect predation of Rhopalosiphum padi during the aphids' establishment and exponential growth phases. Overall 18% of c. 3000 carabids dissected were shown to feed on R. padi during the aphids' pre-peak period. No overall relationship was found between percentage carabids with R. padi in the diet and peak R. padi densities. Relatively high proportions of Bembidion spp. (particularly B. lampros) and Pterostichus cupreus fed on R. padi during the aphids' establishment phase, and proportions of those predator taxa containing R. padi increased with increasing R. padi densities in both high and low aphid density years. P. melanarius and Harpalus rufipes mainly fed on R. padi during the aphids' exponential growth phase. Overall 11% of c. 1350 predators examined in ELISA gave positive reactions to the R. padi antiserum. Relatively high proportions of linyphiid and lycosid spiders were positive throughout the aphid pre-peak period. Several Acari, Opiliones, Trechus spp. (Carabidae), Philonthus spp. (Staphylinidae), Cantharidae and Chilopoda were positive mainly during the aphids' exponential growth phase. Sample sizes were small, however. Very few of the Bembidion spp. tested in ELISA were positive compared with those examined by gut dissection. The maximum period of R. padi protein (antigen) detection in B. lampros was related to temperature, i.e. 8.5 h at 30°C, 20.5 h at 20°C and 34.5 h at 10°C, respectively. It is suggested that the rate of R. padi protein digestion in B. lampros is faster at higher temperatures than the rate of elimination of prey solids from the guts. Several key predators (in this case B. lampros, P. cupreus and linyphiid spiders) which are abundant in spring cereal fields at a time when R. padi emigrants arrive in the crop and which feed on R. padi during the aphids' establishment phase, are identified.
