Benzyladenine (BA) brushed on the cotyledons of 4-day-old seedlings of Pharbitis nil Chois. markedly stimulates flowering. Greates response is obtained for concentrations between 44 and 440 micromolar. The action of BA is on processes in the cotyledon as shown by the response to its site of application, to the dosage applied and to the requirement for its application prior to the dark period. There was little or no effect of BA treatment on either the time measurement processes of photoperiodic induction or on the generation of floral stimulus. Transport of photosynthetic assimilate from the cotyledons to the shoot apex was altered.  相似文献

O2 irreversibly inactivates hydrogenase from Chlamydomonas reinhardi. The mechanism for the inactivation involves the reaction of one molecule of hydrogenase with one molecule of O2 (or two oxygen atoms) in the transition complex of the rate-limiting step. The second order rate constant for this reaction is 190 atmospheres−1 minute−1 (1.4 × 105 molar−1 minute−1). At levels above 0.01 atmosphere O2, the increased numbers of O2 molecules may compete for the site of inactivation hindering the proper orientation for inactivation of any one O2 molecule and resulting in lowered rates of inactivation.  相似文献

The paper uses chemical kinetic arguments and illustrations by computer modelling to discuss the origin and evolution of life. Complex self-reproducing chemical systems cannot arise spontaneously, whereas simple auto-catalytic systems can, especially in an irradiated aqueous medium. Self-reproducing chemical particles of any complexity, in an appropriate environment, have a self-regulating property which permits long-term survival. However, loss of materials from the environment can lead to continuing decay which is circumvented by physical union between different kinds of self-reproducing particles. The increasing complexity produced by such unions (symbioses) is irreversible so that the chemical system evolves. It is suggested that evolution by successive symbioses brough about the change from simple, spontaneously arising, auto-catalytic particles to complex prokaryotic cells.  相似文献

Summary Oögenesis in the oviparous marine teleost, Blennius pholis L., is examined. Eleven developmental stages are identified by ultrastructural observations when changes in the distributions of the organelles and inclusions are described. An exogenous source for the protein yolk precursors is indicated, but less clear is the endogenous contribution. Changes in the follicle epithelium are described together with the formation of the zona which is considered to be follicular in origin. Two types of follicle cell are distinguished and these probably function differently in the process of zona formation. The zona becomes divided into the externa and interna, the latter probably resulting from the chemical ordering by disulphide bonding of the proteinaceous material of the former.We are indebted to Professor E.W. Summary The ultrastructure of the mid-gut cells of aged female Nasonia vitripennis is described. The mid-gut is a shrunken and distorted organ in the aged animal. The individual cells are highly disorganised and the organelle components are altered. The small lipid droplets formed in the apical cell region do not coalesce to form the large central lipid inclusions characteristic of the young animal. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is reduced and some of the mitochondria enlarge. The mid- and apical cell regions also contain large numbers of cytolysosomes. The basal cell region is essentially unchanged, but the channels formed by the infolded basal plasma membranes are dilated. The changes observed are discussed in relation to previous observations on other insect species.We are indebted to Professor E.W. Earlier studies have shown that the activity of the estuarine detrital microflora measured by various enzyme activities, muramic acid and adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) content, heterotrophic potentials, and respiratory activities correlates with the incorporation of C and P into the microbial lipids. In this study, these lipids were reproducibly fractionated into neutral lipid, glycolipid, and phospholipid classes. Distinct differences between the active microflora of oak leaves, sweet gum leaves, and pine needles were evidenced both in the rate of lipid synthesis and in the proportions of neutral lipids, glycolipids, and phospholipids. Successional changes in the microflora of leaves incubated in a semitropical estuary, previously suggested by ATP-to-muramic acid ratios and scanning electron micrography, were reflected in changes in the proportions of C in major lipid classes when analyzed from the same type of detritus. Short incubation times with C gave lipid compositions rich in phospholipids that are typical for the faster-growing bacterial populations; longer incubation with C gave lipid compositions richer in neutral and glycolipids, more characteristic of slower-growing eukaryotes or morphologically more complex prokaryotes. The metabolism of the lipids of the estuarine detrital microflora was examined by a pulse-chase experiment with C. Glycolipids lost C at a rate equal to the loss of C of the slow component of muramic acid. Individual phospholipids lost C from their backbone glycerol esters at different rates.  相似文献

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv. Canadian No. 1), tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. var. humilis) and wheat (triticum monococcum L.) cells were grown in a defined, liquid medium containing either ammonium sulfate, L-glutamine or potassium nitrate as the sole nitrogen source, and the effects of the tricarboxylic-acid (TCA) intermediates, citrate and -ketoglutarate (5, 10, 15 mM), on the growth (dry-weight increase) of these cells was observed. The three cell suspension cultures exhibited a different growth response to the TCA-cycle intermediate supplied, depending upon the concentration of the additive and the nitrogen source. Citrate (5 mM) greatly enhanced growth of alfalfa and wheat cells in an ammonium-based medium but was less effective at higher concentrations, and in the case of alfalfa cells markedly inhibited growth. Tobacco cell growth was inhibited by all citrate concentrations tested. In contrast, all concentrations of -ketoglutarate used stimulated the growth of all three cell cultures in an ammonium-based medium. Alfalfa and wheat cells grown in an L-glutamine-based medium were influenced by citrate in a manner similar to that in ammonium-based medium. The growth of tobacco cells was slightly enhanced by 5 mM citrate but inhibited by higher concentrations. -Ketoglutarate, at all concentrations tested, was stimulatory to the growth of the cells of all three species in a glutamine-based medium, except for alfalfa cells which were inhibited at 15 mM. Both TCA-cycle acids inhibited the growth of alfalfa and tobacco cells grown on a nitrate-based medium whereas the growth of wheat cells was almost unaffected.  相似文献
