  • 1 Seston elemental composition (C, N, P) and the orthophosphate uptake rate constant, k(upt), were measured in the epilimnion of the eutrophic ?ímov Reservoir in the period March-August 1989.
  • 2 Seasonal series of log C/P, log N/P and log [k(upt)] values were highly correlated (r2 in the range 0.84–0.93), but, based on literature-derived criteria, k(upt) values indicated stronger P deficiency than did the C/P values.

Ranunculus flabellaris Rafin., an aquatic buttercup, exhibitsheterophylly at the level of cellular ultrastructure. Comparedto terrestrial leaves, underwater leaves have thinner epidermalcell walls and more numerous paramural bodies per epidermaland mesophyll cell cross-section. The number of chloroplastsand mitochondria in cell cross-sections also contrasts betweenthe two leaf types. Despite within-and between-leaf variations,different patterns of organelle distribution for the two leafforms were found using principal coordinates analysis. In addition,underwater leaf chloroplasts are smaller, have fewer grana,a greater number of thylakoids/granum, and less starch comparedto chloroplasts from terrestrial leaves. At the ultrastructurallevel, submergence in ABA solution does not produce a leaf withas many characteristics of the terrestrial environment, as shownin previous studies of leaf morphology and anatomy. While numberand distribution of organelles in ABA-treated leaves are similarto terrestrial leaves, some features of chloroplast internalstructure and paramural body number and distribution resembleunderwater leaves. It is postulated that ABA acts as a morphogeninvolved in guiding the irreversible processes of leaf development,but certain subcellular characteristics may be determined directlyby the physical environment. The intermediate-sized filaments present in epidermal keratinocytes derived from mouse skin and in an established cell line (HEL) derived from spontaneous transformation of murine keratinocytes grown in vitro, have been examined by immunofluorescence microscopy, using antibodies directed against subunit proteins of different classes of intermediate-sized filaments, as well as by electron microscopy and gel electrophoresis of cytoskeletal preparations highly enriched in intermediate-sized filaments. The keratinocytes derived from neonatal skin, which are capable of only limited replication in vitro, show only a single type of intermediate-sized filaments, i.e., the tonofibril-like arrays of filaments containing prekeratin. HEL cells, which proliferate indefinitely in vitro, retain the tonofilament-like structures typical of differentiated epidermal cells but in addition display intermediate-sized filaments of the vimentin type, i.e., the filament system typically found in mesenchymal and mesenchyme-derived cells. We discuss the possibility that (i) the advent of vimentin-type filaments in epidermal cells in culture is related either to the transformed state or the in vitro growth conditions as such and (ii) other differentiated epithelial cells proliferating in vitro may have more than one system of intermediate-sized filaments.  相似文献

Abstract.Different stages of presumptive winged morphs (males, gynoparae and alate virginoparae) of the blackberry‐cereal aphid, Sitobion fragariae , were exposed to attack by Aphidius ervi . Even though the mechanism influencing wing development in the three aphid morphs differs, the effects of parasitism were similar. Alatiform structures were completely inhibited in all three morphs when the initial attack took place in their first or early second stadium. The disruption of wing development also resulted in apterous/alate‐intermediate forms when aphids were attacked from first (males and gynoparae) or early second (alate virginoparae) up to the fourth larval stadium. The fact that wing development was still disrupted when aphids with well developed wingbuds were parasitized indicates that the early stages of parasitization were influential. Thus, the morphogenetic effects may be exerted by the parasitoid egg or calyx fluid.  相似文献

1. Artificial mixing in the hypertrophic Lake Nieuwe Meer was successful in preventing blooms of the cyanobacterium Microcystis. During the 2 years of artificial, deep mixing the number of colonies of Microcystis per litre and also per m2 was lower than in the two preceding control years. Hardly any nuisance scums of Microcystis occurred in the lake.
2. The phytoplankton shifted from a cyanobacteria-dominated community in summer to a mixed community of flagellates, green algae and diatoms. Reduced sedimentation losses in the mixed lake, probably in combination with a lower pH, favoured non-buoyant algae, while the entrainment of cyanobacteria in the turbulent flow nullified their advantage of buoyancy.
3. The chlorophyll concentrations were much lower in the mixed lake, but the euphotic depth did not show clear differences between the years. The chlorophyll content integrated through depth (m–2) increased in the artificially mixed lake.
4. The deep lake normally stratified in summer, but artificial mixing of the lake in 1993 resulted in a homogeneous temperature and oxygen distribution with depth. In spring 1994, the mixing was applied intermittently with a reduction of 75% of the energy costs, while the mixing was still sufficient to prevent stratification.
5. Determination of the buoyancy state of the colonies on a sunny and calm day showed that the buoyancy loss was low close to the bubble plumes, and high at some distance from these plumes. This suggests that Microcystis could escape the mixing at some distance from the plumes, and could synthesize more carbohydrates during its stay in the upper illuminated layer of the lake than the deep mixed colonies close to the bubble plumes. Determination of the buoyancy state appeared to be a good and simple method to investigate the extent of entrainment of colonies in the turbulent flow.  相似文献

  • 1 Females of the aphid hyperparasitoid Dendrocerus carpenteri (Curtis) search successfully for hosts during both day and night. Oviposition numbers per host patch did not differ significantly between day and night.
  • 2 D.carpenteri females also displayed a nocturnal flight activity, showing that they are not only capable of searching on a given host plant but also of dispersing between host plants.
  • 3 Nocturnal oviposition activity was mainly influenced by egg load. Females with a high egg load laid more eggs at night than females with a comparatively low egg load. Thus, D.carpenteri females may use nocturnal foraging to compensate for the lack of oviposition opportunities during day.
  • 4 D.carpenteri females which foraged continuously for hosts both day and night (= for 24 h per day) benefitted from an 1.4-fold increase in lifetime reproductive success when compared to females which foraged only by day (= for 16 h per day).
  • 5 The benefit of night foraging for this species is a significantly increased reproductive success.

The effects of tebufenozide, a nonsteroidal agonist of ecdysone, on egg development and reproduction in the anautogenic mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Culicidae, Diptera) are examined. The study population originates from Hyderabad, India. A dose‐dependent toxicity is observed when varying concentrations (10 µg L?1 to 10 pg L?1 ) of a flowable formulation of tebufenozide, known as Mimic 2F, are applied to first‐instar larvae in water. The median lethal dose (LC50) against larvae is very low at 1.29 ng L?1 H2O. Doses below the LC50 induce vitellogenesis in the females that subsequently emerge, and these females lay eggs autogenically (without blood feeding). Autogenous egg clutches are laid through three ovarian cycles. The number of eggs laid in each clutch is lower compared with an anautogenous clutch. An autogenic population has been maintained for over 15 generations after the primary induction, during which time the females have not been allowed to feed on blood. By comparison, doses higher than the LC50 inhibit ovarian development. There is a gradual degeneration of the ovaries, and the females die approximately 20 days after imaginal ecdysis without commencing vitellogenesis. The results are discussed in relation to the endocrine and nutritional regulation of vitellogenesis in C. quinquefasciatus, and the possibility of using tebufenozide to regulate populations of some species of mosquito .  相似文献

The method of indolo-α-pyrone fluorescence-determination of indoleacetic acid was investigated to study possible interference from 4-chloro-indoleacetic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, which occur naturally. Both compounds show about 40% of the fluorescence of indoleacetic acid after conversion into their a-pyrones. Other halogenated indoleacetic acids show between zero and 60% of the fluorescence of indoleacetic acid. It is concluded that the concentration of indoleacetic acid cannot be determined in crude extracts in the presence of 4-chloro- or 5-hydroxy-indoleacetic acid, because separate determinations of each of these compounds are not possible by changing the excitation or fluorescence wave-lengths of the testing equipment.  相似文献
