Seven methods for predicting species diversity from inventory data were tested based on two model data sets. These data sets, derived from state automobile license plates observed in Mexico City and Lawrence, Kansas, had the advantage of providing known 'communities' to be sampled, allowing evaluation of different inference methods. Of the seven methods, those of Chao (1984 ), Clench ( Soberón & LLorente, 1993 ), and model Mth of CAPTURE ( Otis et al ., 1978 ) were the most robust. Error inherent in calculations based on raw data was reduced substantially using a series of bootstrap manipulations. We recommend that optimal design of inventories should include stopping rules based on precision of results rather than on effort expended, an approach that offers considerable advantages, in terms of both accuracy of results and efficiency of sampling efforts.  相似文献

1. We quantified production and consumption of stream‐dwelling tadpoles and insect grazers in a headwater stream in the Panamanian uplands for 2 years to assess their effects on basal resources and energy fluxes. At the onset of our study, this region had healthy, diverse amphibian populations, but a catastrophic disease‐driven decline began in September 2004, which greatly reduced amphibian populations. 2. Insect grazer production was 348 mg ash‐free dry mass (AFDM) m?2 year?1 during the first year of the study and increased slightly to 402 mg AFDM m?2 year?1 during the second year. 3. Prior to amphibian declines, resource consumption by grazers (tadpoles and insects) was estimated at 2.9 g AFDM m?2 year?1 of algal primary production, which was nearly twice the estimated amount available. Insect grazers alone accounted for c. 81% of total primary consumption. During the initial stages of the declines, consumption remained at c. 2.9 g AFDM m?2 year?1, but only 35% of the available resource was being consumed and insect grazers accounted for c. 94% of total consumption. 4. Production and resource consumption of some insect grazers increased during the second year, as tadpoles declined, indicating a potential for functional redundancy in this system. However, other insect grazer taxa declined or did not respond to tadpole losses, suggesting a potential for facilitation between tadpoles and some insects; differential responses among taxa resulted in the lack of a response by insect grazers as a whole. 5. Our results suggest that before massive population declines, tadpoles exerted strong top‐down control on algal production and interacted in a variety of ways with other primary consumers. 6. As amphibian populations continue to decline around the globe, changes in the structure and function of freshwater habitats should be expected. Although our study was focused on tropical headwater streams, our results suggest that these losses of consumer diversity could influence other aquatic systems as well and may even reach to adjacent terrestrial environments.  相似文献

Abstract: Wildlife managers increasingly are using remotely sensed imagery to improve habitat delineations and sampling strategies. Advances in remote sensing technology, such as hyperspectral imagery, provide more information than previously was available with multispectral sensors. We evaluated accuracy of high-resolution hyperspectral image classifications to identify wetlands and wetland habitat features important for Columbia spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris) and compared the results to multispectral image classification and United States Geological Survey topographic maps. The study area spanned 3 lake basins in the Salmon River Mountains, Idaho, USA. Hyperspectral data were collected with an airborne sensor on 30 June 2002 and on 8 July 2006. A 12-year comprehensive ground survey of the study area for Columbia spotted frog reproduction served as validation for image classifications. Hyperspectral image classification accuracy of wetlands was high, with a producer's accuracy of 96% (44 wetlands) correctly classified with the 2002 data and 89% (41 wetlands) correctly classified with the 2006 data. We applied habitat-based rules to delineate breeding habitat from other wetlands, and successfully predicted 74% (14 wetlands) of known breeding wetlands for the Columbia spotted frog. Emergent sedge microhabitat classification showed promise for directly predicting Columbia spotted frog egg mass locations within a wetland by correctly identifying 72% (23 of 32) of known locations. Our study indicates hyperspectral imagery can be an effective tool for mapping spotted frog breeding habitat in the selected mountain basins. We conclude that this technique has potential for improving site selection for inventory and monitoring programs conducted across similar wetland habitat and can be a useful tool for delineating wildlife habitats.  相似文献

One major challenge in genetic diversity analysis of minor grass species is the lack of informative molecular markers. A set of 210 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers developed from wheat and barley were evaluated for their transferability to three rough fescue species [Festuca altaica Trinius, F. campestris (Rydb.) and F. hallii (Vassey) Piper]. Twelve SSR primer pairs displayed scorable polymorphism among and within the species. The number of alleles per primer pair ranged from three to 17 with an average of 8.3 for all the species and greatly varied for each species. About 82% of SSR variation resided within the species. Festuca hallii was genetically most distinct among the three species.  相似文献

Searches for Chagas disease vectors were performed at the type locality from which Triatoma sherlocki Papa et al. (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) was described in the municipality of Gentio do Ouro, in the state of Bahia, Brazil, and in a small artisan quarry‐mining community ~13 km distant in a remote area of the same municipality. The latter site represents a new locality record for this species. Adults, nymphs and exuviae of T. sherlocki were found in 21% of human dwellings, indicating that the species is in the process of domiciliation. Prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in collected bugs was 10.8%. Simple predictive approaches based on environmental similarity were used to identify additional sites likely suitable for this species. The approach successfully predicted an additional five sites for the species in surrounding landscapes. Ecological and entomological indicators were combined to discuss whether this scenario likely represents an isolated case or an emerging public health problem.  相似文献

The chrysomelid beetles Chrysochus auratus and C. cobaltinus form a narrow hybrid zone in western North America. We used a combination of direct and indirect analyses to examine the fitness of Chrysochus hybrids. For the direct analyses, we compared the mating frequency, longevity, fecundity and fertility of hybrid females and parentals. For the indirect approach, we tested predictions of multilocus genotype frequencies at a focal site in the hybrid zone, based on the frequencies of mating combinations during the previous generation. Hybrid females produced fewer eggs than did parentals and the eggs they produced in the lab failed to hatch, in contrast to those of parental females. In addition, contrary to predictions that 15.8% of the individuals at the focal site would have multilocus genotypes other than those expected of parentals or F1 individuals, we found no such genotypes at this site. This hybrid zone appears to be an example of a classic tension zone, with endogenous selection against hybrid individuals. We discuss the implications of low hybrid fitness for the evolution of premating barriers in this system, and argue that the integration of direct and indirect approaches is a powerful means of assessing the relative fitness of hybrids, particularly for species in which mate choices are easy to observe in the field.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 273–286.  相似文献

We present an efficient computational architecture designed using supervised machine learning model to predict amyloid fibril forming protein segments, named AmylPepPred. The proposed prediction model is based on bio-physio-chemical properties of primary sequences and auto-correlation function of their amino acid indices. AmylPepPred provides a user friendly web interface for the researchers to easily observe the fibril forming and non-fibril forming hexmers in a given protein sequence. We expect that this stratagem will be highly encouraging in discovering fibril forming regions in proteins thereby benefit in finding therapeutic agents that specifically aim these sequences for the inhibition and cure of amyloid illnesses.
