1. Species responses to global warming are predicted to be manifest as poleward and upward extension of species ranges, whereas cold‐adapted species experience range retractions. We report on recent range retraction of a freshwater crustacean, the Arctic fairy shrimp Branchinecta paludosa (Branchiopoda, Anostraca) from alpine ponds of southern Norway, a southernmost extension of its otherwise arctic range. 2. The species was mapped during two separate surveys, in 1970 and 2011. In 1970, it occurred in numerous ponds from the tree line at 900 m altitude to high alpine sites at 1500 m. Re‐sampling of the same ponds 41 years later revealed extinction of populations from ponds along the lowest 200 m of its altitudinal range. 3. Reconstruction of summer temperatures for the periods 1965–70 and 2005–10 revealed a thermal increase for the period, corresponding to a c. 200‐m upward shift of the local isotherms. More specifically, the number of warm summer days had doubled in the lowest 200 m of the region, which might be particularly detrimental for the species. 4. The extinctions at lower altitudes were not compensated for by corresponding upward colonisations. A phenetic classification based on overall morphological similarity between the species in the family Plectonemertidae (genera Plectonemertes, Campbellonemertes, Potamonemertes, Leptonemertes, Katechonemertes, Argonemertes, Anliponemertes, and Acteonemertes) was undertaken and the result compared with a cladistic and an evolutionary classification. Similarity between species was computed by Gower's general coefficient of similarity and various techniques were used to find patterns in the similarity matrix: single-linkage, average-linkage, and complete-linkage clustering, together with principal coordinate analysis. Although the explicit aim of phenetics is not to estimate the phylogeny, the classification based on overall similarity still portrays phylogeny better than an intuitive assessment of morphological similarity, as judged by the cladistic analysis. The classification does not support the previously proposed hypothesis that the two freshwater genera Campbellonemertes and Potamonemertes have descended from a terrestrial ancestor. 相似文献

Nanosecond, high‐voltage electric pulses (nsEP) induce permeabilization of the plasma membrane and the membranes of cell organelles, leading to various responses in cells including cytochrome c release from mitochondria and caspase activation associated with apoptosis. We report here evidence for nsEP‐induced permeabilization of mitochondrial membranes in living cells. Using three different methods with fluorescence indicators—rhodamine 123 (R123), tetramethyl rhodamine ethyl ester (TMRE), and cobalt‐quenched calcein—we have shown that multiple nsEP (five pulses or more, 4 ns duration, 10 MV/m, 1 kHz repetition rate) cause an increase of the inner mitochondrial membrane permeability and an associated loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. These effects could be a consequence of nsEP permeabilization of the inner mitochondrial membrane or the activation of mitochondrial membrane permeability transition pores. We employed three different methods to estimate predation rates on moose in a newly colonized wolf territory in Norway. In
the first two methods, we estimated predation rates based on the difference in calf/cow ratios outside and inside the wolf
pack territory from (1) hunter observations and (2) aerial surveys. In the last method, (3) we estimated loss of calves of
radio-collared cows inside and outside the wolf pack territory. The difference in mortality rates estimated between the area
subject to predation and the area outside the wolf pack territory essentially constitutes the additive component of predation.
We also tested the sensitivity of violating the assumptions of methods 1 and 2 related to equal fecundity and mortality because
of other factors than predation inside and outside the wolf pack territory. Predation rates varied considerably between years
and methods used, with hunter observations (method 1) giving the lowest and aerial surveys (method 2) giving the highest estimates.
Method 3 (radio telemetry) was the most direct assessment of predation and probably the best approach to estimate predation
rates in moose. However, all three methods show the same yearly changes and may therefore be appropriate to question trends
