SUMMARY. 1. The horizontal distributions of Daphnia longispina and Bosmina tongispina in Lake Kvernavatn (Norway) were investigated twice in 1982. In late spring, when populations were small, the two species inhabited the same areas, and they were evenly distributed from the littoral to the pelagic. At high population densities, during midsummer, the species were spatially segregated, D. longispina being pelagic and B. longispina littoral in distribution.
2. The distribution and feeding of three-spined sticklebacks (Gasteros-teus aculeatus) were also studied. The sticklebacks were apparently forced into littoral areas by larger piscivorous predators in the pelagic and they were consequently restricted to foraging primarily on B. longispina, which formed dense swarms during daytime in summer.
3. We suggest that predation and competition influence the spatial distribution of zooplankton species. The feeding efficiency of fish foraging on high-density zooplankton populations can be reduced by spatial segregation of zooplankton species. Where high local densities occur, due to swarm formation, predation is changed from size-selective feeding to consumption of spatially isolated individuals.  相似文献

In the range 10?6M - 5 × 10?2M uptake of K+ in excised roots of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Herta) with low and high K content could in both cases be represented by an isotherm with four phases. Uptake, especially in the range of the lower phases, was reduced in high K roots through decreases in Vmax and increases in Km. Similar data for other plants are also shown to be consistent with multiphasic kinetics. The concentrations at which transitions occurred were not affected by the K status, indicating the existence of separate uptake and transition sites. Uptake was markedly reduced in the presence of 10?5M 2,4-dinitrophenol, especially at low K+ concentrations, but the isotherms remained multiphasic. This contraindicates major contributions from a non-carrier-mediated, passive flux. A tentative hypothesis for multiphasic ion uptake envisions a structure which changes conformation as a result of all-or-none changes in a separate transition site. The structure is “tight” at low external ion concentrations (low Vmax. low Km. active uptake, allosteric regulation) and “loose” at high concentrations (high Vmax- high Km- facilitated diffusion, no regulation).  相似文献

D-Mannose, 2-deoxy-D-glucose, 6-deoxy-D-galactose, and 2-deoxy-D-galactose inhibit germination of pine pollen (Pinus mugo Turra) probably competitively with a metabolizable sugar. Inhibition by D-mannose, 2-deoxy-D-glucose, or 6-deoxy-D-galactose is reversed by transfer of pollen to sucrose medium, if the inhibitors was added before tube growth has started. In contrast, inhibition by 2-deoxy-D-galactose is irreversible except after very short exposures to the inhibitor, in which case the transfer results in reduced growth and germination. Incubation with 2-deoxy-D-glucose, 6-deoxy-n-galactose, or 2-deoxy-D-galactose after tube growth has started, results in irreversible inhibition of growth. If D-mannose is used, growth is resumed if the pollen are transferred to sucrose medium. Addition of D-mannose or lowering of the temperature prior to incubation with the deoxyhexoses protected against the irreversible growth inhibition. Uptake of oxygen and 32P-labelled phosphate is reduced upon addition of either of the inhibitors.  相似文献

1. Invasions of top predators may have strong cascading effects in ecosystems affecting both prey species abundance and lower trophic levels. A recently discussed factor that may enhance species invasion is climate change and in this context, we studied the effects of an invasion of northern pike into a subarctic lake ecosystem formerly inhabited by the native top predator Arctic char and its prey fish, ninespined stickleback. 2. Our study demonstrated a strong change in fish community composition from a system with Arctic char as top predator and high densities of sticklebacks to a system with northern pike as top predator and very low densities of sticklebacks. A combination of both predation and competition from pike is the likely cause of the extinction of char. 3. The change in top predator species also cascaded down to primary consumers as both zooplankton and predator‐sensitive macroinvertebrates increased in abundance. 4. Although the pike invasion coincided with increasing summer temperatures in the study area we have no conclusive evidence that the temperature increase is the causal mechanism behind the pike invasion. But still, our study provides possible effects of future pike invasions in mountain lakes related to climate change. We suggest that future pike invasions will have strong effects in lake ecosystems, both by replacing native top consumers and through cascading effects on lower trophic levels.  相似文献

With a unique data set comprising 1041 boreal forested and low human impacted lakes included in three Swedish lake inventories for 1995, 2000 and 2005 and with time series for 12 of the lakes from 1988 to 2008 we show that nitrate‐nitrogen (NO3‐N) is accumulated in freshwaters along with increasing atmospheric nitrogen deposition (Ndep). At the same time we observe decreasing DOC : NO3‐N ratios in the water column. We suggest that NO3‐N is accumulated in freshwaters when denitrifying bacteria are limited by their energy source rather than the availability of NO3‐N, i.e. at low DOC : NO3‐N ratios. We obtained further support for a close relationship between Ndep driven DOC : NO3‐N ratios and the efficiency of nitrate removal by using a published global data set on measured nitrate removal rates in unproductive reference streams. Owing to the currently decreasing Ndep in large regions of, for instance, Northern Europe, this process is now reversed, resulting in increasing DOC : NO3‐N ratios and more efficient nitrate removal from freshwaters. Depending on NOx emissions, nitrogen limited regions may expand with an immediate effect on nitrate concentrations in freshwaters.  相似文献

The Kinglet Calyptura Calyptura cristata is one of the most enigmatic bird species in South America, known only from specimens collected in the 19th century and a few recent observations. Knowledge of its biology is scanty and its systematic position is obscure. Traditionally, Calyptura was placed in the Cotingidae, but associated with genera that are now known to fall outside the Cotingidae. In an attempt to clarify its phylogenetic position, sequence data from four nuclear markers were obtained from a 180‐year‐old museum study skin of Calyptura, and incorporated into a comprehensive dataset of tyrant flycatchers, cotingas, manakins and allies. Our analyses demonstrate that Calyptura is most closely related to Platyrinchus and Neopipo and that these three genera constitute a deep branch in the clade containing the Rhynchocyclidae (tody‐tyrants and flatbills) and Tyrannidae (typical tyrant flycatchers). The Calyptura specimen is one of the oldest avian museum specimens from which a substantial amount of nuclear DNA sequence data have been obtained, and highlights the immense value of museum collections for DNA‐based phylogenetic studies.  相似文献

Luk?evi?s, E., Ahlberg, P.E., Stinkulis, ?., Vasi?kova, J. & Zupi??, I. 2011: Frasnian vertebrate taphonomy and sedimentology of macrofossil concentrations from the Langsēde Cliff, Latvia. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 356–370. The siliciclastic sequence of the Upper Devonian of Kurzeme, Western Latvia, is renowned for abundant vertebrate fossils, including the stem tetrapods Obruchevichthys gracilis and Ventastega curonica. During the first detailed taphonomic study of the vertebrate assemblage from the Ogre Formation cropping out at the Langsēde Cliff, Imula River, abundant vertebrate remains have been examined and identified as belonging to one psammosteid, two acanthodian and three sarcopterygian genera; the placoderm Bothriolepis maxima dominates the assemblage. Besides fully disarticulated placoderm and psammosteid plates, separate sarcopterygian scales and teeth, and acanthodian spines, partly articulated specimens including complete distal segments of Bothriolepis pectoral fins, Bothriolepis head shields and sarcopterygian lower jaws have been found. The size distribution of the placoderm bones demonstrates that the individuals within the assemblage are of approximately uniform age. Distinct zones have been traced within the horizontal distribution of the bones. These linear zones are almost perpendicular to the dominant dip azimuth of the cross‐beds and ripple‐laminae and most probably correspond to the depressions between subaqueous dunes. Concavity ratio varies significantly within the excavation area. The degree of fragmentation of the bones and disarticulation of the skeletons suggest that the carcasses were reworked and slightly transported before burial. Sedimentological data suggest deposition in a shallow marine environment under the influence of rapid currents. The fossiliferous bed consists of a basal bone conglomerate covered by a cross‐stratified sandstone with mud drapes, which is in turn overlain by ripple laminated sandstone, indicating the bones were buried by the gradual infilling of a tidal channel. All the Middle–Upper Devonian vertebrate bone‐beds from Latvia are associated with sandy to clayey deposits and have been formed in a sea‐coastal zone during rapid sedimentation episodes, but differ in fossil abundance and degree of preservation. □Agnathans, Devonian, facies analysis, fish, fossil assemblage, palaeoenvironment.  相似文献

Our study combined a mitochondrial cytochrome b phylogeny with cranial measurements from giant pouched rats collected across sub‐Saharan Africa. The mitochondrial phylogeny resolves two West African clades and a clade with east and central Africa representatives. This last clade can be further divided into four subclades. Altogether they represent six species (Cricetomys gambianus, Cricetomys ansorgei, Cricetomys emini, and three undescribed taxa) that can be distinguished on the basis of their mitochondrial DNA sequences and craniometry. In the absence of adequate craniometric data the existence of Cricetomys kivuensis cannot be confirmed by our data. Our combined molecular and craniometric data allowed us to broadly delineate the distribution ranges of the detected species. Cricetomys gambianus occurs in the savannah and forest clearings of West Africa. Cricetomys ansorgei is distributed in the savannah of East and southern Africa. Cricetomys emini, as currently recognized across the Guineo‐Congolian forest of Africa, is shown to be diphyletic. Cricetomys sp. 1, a separate operational taxonomic unit closely resembling C. emini, occurs in the forest zone of West Africa. An undescribed sister‐species of C. ansorgei, Cricetomys sp. 2, occurs in the forest of Central Africa along the left bank of the Congo River. Cricetomys sp. 3 occurs on the right bank of the Congo River from Cameroon to the Republic of Congo, whereas the true C. emini also occurs on the right bank of the Congo River but appears to be restricted to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Cranial phenotype within the genus tends to conform to ecological zonation (either forest or savannah) rather than to phylogenetic affiliation of the species concerned, suggesting that diversifying selection across environmental gradients could be responsible for biological diversification within the genus.  相似文献

1. Non‐native trout have been stocked in streams and lakes worldwide largely without knowledge of the consequences for native ecosystems. Although trout have been introduced widely throughout the Sierra Nevada of California, U.S.A., fishless streams and their communities of native invertebrates persist in some high elevation areas, providing an opportunity to study the effects of trout introductions on natural fishless stream communities. 2. We compared algal biomass and cover, organic matter levels and invertebrate assemblages in 21 natural fishless headwater streams with 21 paired nearby streams containing stocked trout in Yosemite National Park. 3. Although environmental conditions and particulate organic matter levels did not differ between the fishless and trout streams, algal biomass (as chlorophyll a concentration) and macroalgal cover were, on average, approximately two times and five times higher, respectively, in streams containing trout. 4. There were no differences in the overall densities of invertebrates in fishless versus paired trout streams; however, invertebrate richness (after rarefaction), evenness, and Simpson and Shannon diversities were 10–20% higher in fishless than in trout streams. 5. The densities of invertebrates belonging to the scraper‐algivore and predator functional feeding guilds were higher, and those for the collector‐gatherer guild lower, in fishless than trout streams, but there was considerable variation in the effects of trout on specific taxa within functional feeding groups. 6. We found that the densities of 10 of 50 common native invertebrate taxa (found in more than half of the stream pairs) were reduced in trout compared to fishless streams. A similar number of rarer taxa also were absent or less abundant in the presence of trout. Many of the taxa that declined with trout were conspicuous forms (by size and behaviour) whose native habitats are primarily high elevation montane streams above the original range of trout. 7. Only a few taxa increased in the presence of trout, possibly benefiting from reductions in their competitors and predators by trout predation. 8. These field studies provide catchment‐scale evidence showing the selective influence of introduced trout on stream invertebrate and algal communities. Removal of trout from targeted headwater streams may promote the recovery of native taxa, community structure and trophic organisation.  相似文献
