A supposed hybrid population ( Agave peacockii ) between Agave marmorata and Agave kerchovei in a semiarid ecosystem at Zapotitlán Salinas, in the Mexican State of Puebla, was investigated, and its hybrid status corroborated in morphometric terms. A Stepwise Discriminant Analysis of the ratios: Number of leaved Rosette diameter, Leaf width/Leaf length, Number of spines/Leaf length, Distance between the upper spine and the tip of the leaf/Leaf length, and Distance between the upper spine and the tip of the leaf/Number of spines, supported our hypothesis of the existence of these naturally occurring hybrids, which are intermediate and distinct from the parental species. A null model was constructed to contrast the real case with a possible artifact, and the results also supported our hypothesis. The possible meaning of this kind of hybridization is discussed.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) ears were removed to investigate long-term regulation of photosynthesis by sink demand at ambient CO2 and 22 °C. The CO2 level was also increased to 660 μmol mol?1 and temperature was lowered to 5 °C to examine short-term responses of photosynthesis to low sink demand. Sink removal inhibited photosynthesis and increased leaf levels of glucose, fructose and ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate (RuBP), and the glucose-6-phosphate (G6P)/fructose-6-phosphate (F6P) and RuBP/3-phosphoglycerate (PGA) ratios under growth conditions, but had no effect on the activity and activation state of ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (Rubisco) either under growth or short-term conditions, suggesting an inhibition of photosynthesis by decreased in vivo catalysis of Rubisco. Photosynthesis increased similarly in eared and earless shoots after a rise in CO2 concentration, and the ratio of triose-phosphates (glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate, TP) to PGA was similar or higher for removed than intact ears, suggesting that feedback inhibition of photosynthesis was not caused by a limitation of ATP synthesis in chloroplasts. Under short-term conditions (660 μmol mol?1 CO2, 5 °C), TP and RuBP levels and the TP/PGA and TP/RuBP ratios were increased by sink removal, indicating an additional limitation of photosynthesis by the rate of RuBP regeneration.  相似文献

Nitrate reductase (NR) activity has been characterized on cell-freeextracts of the marine unicellular green alga, Acetabulariamediterranea. Reduced methyl viologen and bromophenol blue aswell as NAD(P)H were effective electron donors for the enzyme. NADH-NR activity increased during cell development reachingits maximum level when the cells approached their maximum length.A substantial increase was also seen in enucleated cells. Theenzyme activity was only present in the green parts of the celland became diminished as the stalks bleached in ageing cells.Under a 12 h light: 12 h darkness photoperiod, NADH-NR activityexhibited pronounced daily fluctuations reaching its maximumon the first hour of illumination (this increase was impairedby cycloheximide) and a minimum in the middle of the dark period. In N-starved algal cultures, NR was constitutively present atappreciable levels and new synthesis took place in the presenceof either NO3 or low concentrations of NH+4 . However, in thepresence of this cation the enzyme remained mostly in its inactiveform, and could be reactivated in vitro with ferrycyanide. The number and type of isoforms of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and their activities were compared in mitochondria and peroxisomes isolated from cotyledons of three different oilseed seedlings. Mitochondrial and peroxisomal isoforms of SOD could be distinguished in nondenaturing polyacrylamide gels by their differential sensitivities to KCN and/or H2O2. The type of SOD was not the same for each organelle in each of the three oilseed species. For example, a single Mn–SOD was found in cotton and cucumber mitochondria, whereas four CuZn–SODs were present in mitochondria from sunflower. At least one CuZn–SOD isoform was found in the peroxisomes of all three species. Cucumber peroxisomes contained both a CuZn–SOD and a Mn–SOD, cotton peroxisomes contained a single CuZn–SOD, whilst four separate CuZn–SODs, but no Mn–SOD were found in sunflower peroxisomes. Using antibodies against CuZn–SOD from watermelon peroxisomes or from chloroplasts of Equisetum , a single polypeptide of c . 16·5 kDa was detected on immunoblots of peroxisomal fractions from the three species. Post-embedment, electron-microscopic double immunogold-labelling showed that CuZn–SOD, with malate synthase used as marker enzyme of peroxisomes, was localized in the matrix of these organelles of all three species. These results suggest that CuZn–SOD is a characteristic matrix enzyme of peroxisomes in oilseed cotyledons.  相似文献

1. The southern monarch, Danaus erippus, uses mainly Asclepias curassavica as its host in the Neotropics, a plant species bearing articulated anastomosing laticifers. When artificially severed, A. curassavica has been shown to release significantly less latex than other Asclepias species. 2. The present study tested the hypothesis that sabotaging behaviour changes during the ontogeny of D. erippus and recorded latex outflow of A. curassavica during sabotaging and feeding. Larvae displayed vein‐cutting behaviour, which was initially observed in the second instar, became more pronounced in the third and fourth instars, and less frequent in the fifth instar. When present, latex outflow was never more than 1 µl at a time during either vein cutting or feeding, regardless of the instar. 3. Mandibular and midrib morphometrics revealed that larvae selected thicker midrib sites for severing as instars progressed; however, no correlation between mandibular size and midrib size severed was found within instars. 4. Costs of sabotaging behaviour and the effects of A. curassavica latex outflow on D. erippus larvae were also examined. Sabotaging behaviour did not incur growth costs for larvae, and only latex exudation volumes at least 10‐fold greater than those observed due to D. erippus sabotaging or feeding, caused significantly higher larval mortality than controls. 5. Since latex outflow is minimal or non‐existent in A. curassavica, sabotaging behaviour in D. erippus is mostly limited by morphological constraints and is probably driven by chemical stimulants rather than latex defence. In turn, latex does not constitute a major defence of A. curassavica against D. erippus.  相似文献

Upper Viséan platform limestones from Ireland and northern England contain occasionally hemispherical to bean-shaped structures attached to fenestellid bryozoan colonies. These problematic structures are described and compared with another Mississippian problematicum, Draffania. Both problematic taxa exhibit a similar skeletal structure, but have some different morphological features. They also have comparable stratigraphic records and occupied similar palaeoecological niches. Possible affinities of this new problematicum with foraminiferans, crinoids, algae, and bryozoans are discussed, but its definite taxonomic status remains to be elucidated.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Fields such as ecology, macroecology, and conservation biology rely on accurate and comparable data. This is especially important for mostly unknown and megadiverse taxa such as spiders and regions such as the Mediterranean. Short-term sampling programmes are increasingly seen as the best option for sampling spiders. Comparability of results, however, demands standard procedures both in methodology and in sampling period. Cost-efficiency dictates that this period should be the most species rich.
2. Pitfall trapping was conducted in 23 sites from north to south Portugal, comprising three large-scale environmental zones and many different habitat types, during 10 months in each site. The annual richness pattern, differences in this pattern between areas and habitats, the complementarity between sampling periods and possible environmental correlates of richness were studied.
3. May and June present the optimal time for collecting spiders in Mediterranean areas. Northern areas have a later peak in richness and dense tree-cover sites offer more flexibility for sampling, with a higher proportion of species present at each period throughout the year.
4. Day length is the environmental factor most correlated with species richness. Maximum daily temperature may reduce richness, especially in southernmost areas, where summer temperatures can be extremely harsh.
5. It is recommended that short-term sampling programmes, intended to give a reasonable picture of spider communities in Portugal and in the Iberian Peninsula (and possibly extending to all the Mediterranean), should be conducted during May or June, with variable flexibility according to area and habitat. The proposed suggestions should appeal to everyone working in the field, given the cost-efficiency and comparability of results by adopting a common standardised approach.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Previous research has demonstrated that parasitism of larval macrolepidoptera on Acer negundo (box elder) is greater than that of larvae on Salix nigra. 2. In this study, percentage larval parasitism of species on box elder and black willow was calculated for distinct portions of the season, to determine if the higher levels of parasitism on box elder resulted from greater parasitism during a particular portion of the season. 3. Larval parasitism was higher on box elder regardless of the portion of the season; however, the seasonal pattern of parasitism differed for each tree species, i.e. late-season box elder parasitism increased and late-season black willow parasitism decreased relative to early- and mid-season parasitism. 4. The degree to which higher levels of parasitism were associated with host and parasitoid traits such as average larval abundance, number of species, type of host, and parasitoid species load of macrolepidoptera, as well as average number of species of parasitoids during each portion of the season was determined. 5. In addition, the possibility that differences in the pattern of parasitism on box elder and black willow were caused by the presence of a greater number of numerically dominant parasitoid species in late-season box elder was investigated. 6. None of the variables, other than type of host species, were associated with higher levels of parasitism in late-season box elder. 7. Late-season, single-tree species on box elder (i.e. species that occurred only on box elder) were more heavily parasitised, compared with dual-tree species. This difference was not observed earlier in the season nor on black willow. 8. Further, single-tree species on late-season box elder included three numerically dominant species that suffered significantly greater larval parasitism than any other type of species on either of the two trees. 9. This study supported previous predictions, that suggested the importance of larval coloration: there was a higher proportion of green larvae among the most highly parasitised host species, i.e. single-tree, numerically dominant species.  相似文献

Taxonomy:  Cladosporium fulvum is an asexual fungus for which no sexual stage is currently known. Molecular data, however, support C. fulvum as a member of the Mycosphaerellaceae, clustering with other taxa having Mycosphaerella teleomorphs . C. fulvum has recently been placed in the anamorph genus Passalora as P. fulva . Its taxonomic disposition is supported by its DNA phylogeny, as well as the distinct scars on its conidial hila, which are typical of Passalora , and unlike Cladosporium s.s. , which has teleomorphs that reside in Davidiella , and not Mycosphaerella .
Host range and disease symptoms:  The presently known sole host of C. fulvum is tomato (members of the genus Lycopersicon ). C. fulvum is mainly a foliar pathogen. Disease symptoms are most obvious on the abaxial side of the leaf and include patches of white mould that turn brown upon sporulation. Due to stomatal clogging, curling of leaves and wilting can occur, leading to defoliation.
C. fulvum as a model pathogen:  The interaction between C. fulvum and tomato is governed by a gene-for-gene relationship. A total of eight Avr and Ecp genes, and for four of these also the corresponding plant Cf genes, have been cloned. Obtaining conclusive evidence for gene-for-gene relationships is complicated by the poor availability of genetic tools for most Mycosphaerellaceae – plant interactions. Newly developed tools, including Agrobacterium -mediated transformation and RNAi, added to the genome sequence of its host tomato, which will be available within a few years, render C. fulvum attractive as a model species for plant pathogenic Mycosphaerellaceae.
