ABSTRACT Unbiased estimates of mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) populations are key to meeting diverse harvest management and conservation objectives. We developed logistic regression models of factors influencing sightability of mountain goat groups during helicopter surveys throughout the Cascades and Olympic Ranges in western Washington during summers, 2004–2007. We conducted 205 trials of the ability of aerial survey crews to detect groups of mountain goats whose presence was known based on simultaneous direct observation from the ground (n = 84), Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry (n = 115), or both (n = 6). Aerial survey crews detected 77% and 79% of all groups known to be present based on ground observers and GPS collars, respectively. The best models indicated that sightability of mountain goat groups was a function of the number of mountain goats in a group, presence of terrain obstruction, and extent of overstory vegetation. Aerial counts of mountain goats within groups did not differ greatly from known group sizes, indicating that under-counting bias within detected groups of mountain goats was small. We applied Horvitz-Thompson-like sightability adjustments to 1,139 groups of mountain goats observed in the Cascade and Olympic ranges, Washington, USA, from 2004 to 2007. Estimated mean sightability of individual animals was 85% but ranged 0.75–0.91 in areas with low and high sightability, respectively. Simulations of mountain goat surveys indicated that precision of population estimates adjusted for sightability biases increased with population size and number of replicate surveys, providing general guidance for the design of future surveys. Because survey conditions, group sizes, and habitat occupied by goats vary among surveys, we recommend using sightability correction methods to decrease bias in population estimates from aerial surveys of mountain goats.  相似文献

This study has investigated the taxon‐specific responses of fauna to patch edges, and how these relate to patch attributes (patch size, seagrass biomass and water depth), and hydrodynamics in the seagrass habitat. Faunal abundances were sampled at the edge, 2 m in from the edge, and in the middle of 10 seagrass patches of variable size in Port Phillip Bay, Australia. Five of nine taxa showed edge effects. There were higher abundances at the edge compared with the middle for porcellid harpacticoids, and an increase in abundance from the edge to the middle of the patches for tanaids and isopods. For caprellid and gammarid amphipods, the edge effect varied across patches. Changes in current within the patch and patch size were related to the variability in the edge effect pattern of caprellids. None of the measured environmental variables (seagrass biomass, current and water depth) or patch size had a role in the variable edge effect pattern of gammarid amphipods. At the patch level, the distribution of six of nine taxa in this study, namely isopods, polychaetes, ‘other harpacticoids’, porcellid harpacticoids, cumaceans and gammarid amphipods, was related to differences in average water depth, average seagrass biomass and patch size. Our study indicates that the faunal response to edges cannot be generalized across seagrass habitat, and the implications of habitat area loss will vary depending on the taxon under consideration.  相似文献

Geographical changes in suitability in England and Wales for the cultivation of potatoes under a climate change scenario were predicted for the years 2023 and 2065 by integrating a climate database (1951-80) with climate-driven crop growth models. Initially, model outputs were produced as point values (meteorological site locations) of predicted potential yields for current crop production. The model outputs were validated statistically using actual crop yield figures collated from bibliographic analysis. The most suitable model was run again incorporating projected temperature and precipitation changes for 2023 and 2065. These outputs were then used to predict possible economic changes to farm profitability and general market trends. Results indicated that, although yields may rise, gross margins for maincrop and especially early potatoes may also rise due to shifts in production, to a fall in overall potato output and to price increases.  相似文献

The Australian bass is a catadromous species found in drainages of southeastern Australia. As an economically important resource that is declining in number, the Australian bass is currently extensively stocked in New South Wales and Victoria to meet the requirements of fisheries programs. We have developed six microsatellite markers that amplify in both Australian bass and the congeneric estuary perch. These markers are useful for investigating population genetic structure and for identifying hybrids between these two species.  相似文献

Samples from 200–300 randomly selected spring barley crops were taken annually at growth stage 73–77 (milky ripe) from 1976 to 1980. The number of samples from each region was proportional to the area of barley grown in each region. The percentage of the area of the top two leaves affected by diseases was recorded. Mildew (Erysiphe graminis) was the most widespread and severe disease recorded. Brown rust (Puccinia hordei) and rhynchosporium (Rhyn-chosporium secalis) occurred frequently but at relatively low levels. Yellow rust {Puccinia striiformis) and septoria (Septoria nodorum) were seen on less than 50% of the samples in most years, and halo spot (Selenophoma donacis) and net blotch (Pyrenophora teres) were rarely recorded. There was an association between the severity of rhynchosporium and the number of rain days in May and June. The highest levels of brown rust occurred in the south and east and rhynchosporium was more common in Wales and the south-west than in the east, but there were no differences in the regional distribution of other diseases. Cultivar resistance, sowing date, previous cropping and fungicide usage were all found to be associated with altered disease levels. The proportion of crops treated with a foliar fungicidal spray rose from 26% in 1976 to 47% in 1980. The use of tridemorph declined but that of triadimefon increased reaching 29% of crops treated by 1980. The use of ethirimol as a seed treatment declined from 16% of crops grown from treated seed in 1976 to 7% in 1980. Estimated yield losses between 1976 and 1980 varied between 4% and 9% due to mildew, between 0.3% and 0.8% due to brown rust and between 0.2% and 0.5% due to rhynchosporium.  相似文献

A new model for simulating nitrogen leaching fromforested ecosystems has been applied to data from anexperimentally manipulated 30-year-old Sitka sprucestand. The manipulation experiment (at Aber, in north-western Wales, UK) was part of the European NITREXproject and involved five years of additions ofinorganic nitrogen to the spruce stand. The model(MERLIN) is a catchment-scale, mass-balance model thatsimulates both biotic and abiotic processes affectingnitrogen in ecosystems.The structure of MERLIN includes representationsof the inorganic soil, one plant compartment and twosoil organic compartments. Fluxes in and out of thesimulated ecosystem and transfers between compartmentsare regulated by atmospheric deposition, hydrologicaldischarge and biological processes such as plantuptake, litter production, immobilization,mineralization, nitrification and denitrification.Rates of nitrogen uptake, cycling and release amongpools are regulated by carbon productivity, inorganicnitrogen availability and the C:N ratios of theorganic pools. Inputs to the model are temporalsequences of carbon fluxes and pools, hydrologicaldischarge and external sources of nitrogen.The NITREX experiment at Aber began in 1990 withweekly additions of ammonium nitrate(NH4NO3) at a rate of 35 kg N ha-1 yr-1.Data were collected from both control andtreatment plots within the stand. The site-intensivedata from the control plots at Aber were augmented bydata taken from a chronosequence of 20 Sitka sprucestands and data from a survey of 5 moorland catchmentsin the same region to providecalibration data for the model. The data were used toestablish current conditions at the Aber site and toreconstruct historical sequences of carbon fluxes andpools from 1900 to the present day with which to drivethe model. The reconstructed sequences included anincrease in nitrogen deposition and a vegetationchange from moorland to plantation forest in 1960. Thecalibrated model was then used to predict the effectsof the experimental nitrogen additions begun in 1990.MERLIN successfully reproduced the observedincrease in NO3 leaching from aging spruce standsthat results from forest maturation and increasednitrogen deposition (as inferred from thechronosequence and forest survey data in the region).MERLIN also correctly predicted the increases insoilwater NO3 concentrations, the changes innitrogen content of tree and soil organic matterpools, and the changes in nitrogen fluxes that occurin spruce stands in response to increased nitrogeninputs (as observed in the nitrogen additionexperiment).  相似文献

The activity of photosystems one and two (PS I and PS II) wasmeasured in chloroplasts isolated from the primary leaves ofPhaseolus vulgaris. During foliar senescence, the rates of electrontransport through PS I and PS II declined by approximately 25%and 33% respectively. These losses of activity could not accountfor the decrease of 80% in the rate of coupled, non-cyclic electrontransport during senescence. It is therefore suggested thatan impairment of electron flow between the photosystems limitednon-cyclic electron transport in chloroplasts from older leaves.In this study the activity of PS II was measured using oxidizedp-phenylenediamine as the electron acceptor, and trifluralinas an inhibitor of electron transport between PS II and PS I.In chloroplasts from young leaves the reduction of ferricyanidewas a measure of non-cyclic electron transport, but in preparationsfrom older leaves ferricyanide received a large proportion ofelectrons from PS II.  相似文献

MOLAR OCCLUSION IN LATE TRIASSIC MAMMALS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. A new genus and species of late Triassic mammal, Megazostrodon rudnerae, from Lesotho in southern Africa is described. The molars are similar to those of the British Eozostrodon parvus except that they are slightly larger and the upper molars have a large external cingulum supporting well-developed cusps. 2. Molar occlusion is discussed in two groups of late Triassic mammals: Eoxostrodon and the closely related Megazostrodon on one the hand and the unnamed primitive symmetrodonts on the other. It is shown that in Eoxostrodon the upper and lower molars did not have matching occlusal surfaces upon eruption but that wear produced matching occlusal surfaces. These surfaces are confined to the internal surface of the upper molars and the external surface of the lower molars and form a series of wide-angled triangles. The main cusp of an upper molar occluded between the main and posterior subsidiary cusp of the lower molar and the main cusp of the lower molar occluded between the main and anterior subsidiary cusp of the upper molar, 3. It is shown that the molars of Docodon and HaIdanodon were possibly derived from those of a primitive mammal such as Eozostrodon. The transition involved the development on the upper molars of an internal extension which, as it increased in size, established contact with the dorsal surfaces of two adjacent lower molars. The process involved is fundamentally different from that leading to tribosphenic molars. 4. In Megaxostrodon the main cusp of the upper molars occluded between the posterior and anterior subsidiary cusps of two adjacent lower molars, i.e. more posteriorly than in Eozostrodon. Primitive Rhaetic symmetrodonts were derived from mammals which had this type of occlusion and which were also closely related to Eoxostrodon and Megaxostrodon. The transition involved a rotation of the subsidiary cusps of the upper molars externally and those of the lower molars internally. This rotation increased the shearing surfaces between occluding upper and lower molars. Cusp rotation was carried further in the acute-angled symmetrodonts (Peralestes and Spalacotherium) and pantotheres. It appears that marked cusp rotation was coupled with the acquisition of transverse movements of the lower jaw during mastication. Transverse movement was apparently not possible in cynodonts, in Eoxostrodon (and related forms) and in Docodon. 5. The evolution of therian molars involves cusp rotation as originally proposed by the Cope—Osborn theory. Criticisms of the Cope—Osborn theory are re-evaluated in light of the new late Triassic material. 6. In Rhaetic symmetrodonts, molar wear produces matching occlusal facets, but the amount of attrition necessary to produce these facets was considerably less than in Eoxostrodon. In acute-angled symmetrodonts and in pantotheres, the molars erupt with more precise occlusal surfaces and attrition was not necessary to produce matching surfaces. 7. On the basis of the structure of the molar teeth it was concluded that Eozostrodon, Megazostrodon and Erythrotherium were closely related to the Rhaetic symmetrodonts. Slightly different occlusal relationships between upper and lower molars indicated that in these early mammals constant occlusal relations were being established. 8. Primitive cynodonts, such as Thrinaxodon, are characterized by alternate tooth replacement; there is a total lack of a constant occlusal relationship between upper and lower postcanine teeth. In Thrinaxodon individual postcanines were replaced several times. The crown structures of successive generations of postcanines were different so that a freshly erupted postcanine tooth had a crown structure quite distinct from the tooth which it replaced. It has been shown that the crown structure of one of the generations of postcanine teeth of Thrinaxodon is almost identical to that of Eozostrodon except that Thrinaxodon postcanines have a single root, On the basis of this similarity and the over-all structure of the primitive cynodont skull, it was concluded that Rhaetic mammals (excluding ictidosaurs and haramyids) could be derived from primitive cynodonts. 9. All the orders of Jurassic mammals (with the possible exception of multituber-culates) were probably derived from late Triassic mammals. The apparent close relationship of late Triassic mammals is evidence of a monophyletic origin of this class.  相似文献

Observations in Worcestershire have shown that heavy losses of salad onions due to white rot may occur on sites which have not been known to carry a previous susceptible crop. Reasons for this are discussed. During five seasons a good control of the disease has been obtained by treating the seed with pure calomel applied with a resin-alcohol sticker. The treatment also gave some control of damping off of seedlings due to Corticium solani. Broadcasting 4 % calomel dust at 2½-3 cwt. per acre was less satisfactory in controlling white rot. In one season promising results were obtained with seed treatment of bulb onions.  相似文献
