Abstract:  The first mygalomorph spiders from the Lower Cretaceous Crato Lagerstätte of Cearà Province, north-east Brazil, are described, from adult males and females, in two new genera and species: Cretadiplura ceara Selden, gen. et sp. nov. and Dinodiplura ambulacra Selden, gen. et sp. nov. They belong to the extant family Dipluridae, hitherto known as fossils only from Tertiary strata; thus this occurrence extends the family record by some 90 myr.  相似文献

The consequences of population bottlenecks for morphological differentiation were investigated experimentally in the Afrotropical butterfly Bicyclus anynana (Satyrinae). A genetically variable laboratory population was used to establish daughter populations differing in the severity of the founding bottleneck (two, six, 20 and c. 300 individuals), with four to six replicate lines per treatment. Nine quantitative traits of the hind wing were measured (wing area and eight wing pattern characters) in the founders, F1, F2 and F3 generations. A tenth character, egg weight, was measured in all lines in F3. The validity of the neutral additive model was tested by regressing the observed phenotypic variance among replicate lines (Vd) at F3 against the expected additive genetic variance among lines (2FtVA0, where Ft is the coefficient of inbreeding at generation t and VA0 is the additive genetic variance in the base population). This analysis was performed for the first six principal components of the wing character set, and using two series of Ft estimates, one obtained from demographic parameters, the other from molecular markers. Overall, Vd was slightly less than expected, perhaps as a result of some characters being subject to weak stabilizing selection, but the general picture was one of close concordance with the prediction of the neutral additive model. Plots of phenotypic line means, from the parental generation through to F3, illustrate that the observed differentiation was essentially entirely due to the initial sampling event. Carbon dioxide has been rapidly accumulating in the atmosphere and is expected to continue to do so. This accumulation is presumed to have important direct effects on plant growth. The interacting affects of a small increase in CO2 concentration (466 p.p.m., approximately 30% increase from current ambient conditions), nitrogen fertilization and fungal endophyte (Neotyphodium lolii) infection on the growth and chemical composition of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) were investigated. It was found that dry mass production was approximately 50% greater under elevated CO2 than under ambient CO2, but only in conditions of high soil N. High molecular weight carbohydrates and total carbohydrates (LMW + HMW CHO) depended on an interaction between CO2 and endophyte infection. Infected plants contained significantly more carbohydrate than endophyte-free plants, and the difference was greatest in ambient CO2 conditions. Protein concentrations were also influenced by the interaction between CO2 and endophyte-infection. Endophyte-free plants had 40% lower concentrations of soluble protein under elevated CO2 than under ambient CO2, but this CO2 effect on soluble protein was largely absent in endophyte-infected plants. CO2, endophyte-infection and nitrogen interacted to influence the total chlorophyll concentration of the grass such that chlorophyll concentration was always lower in elevated CO2 but this decline was much greater in endophyte-free plants, particularly in conditions of high soil N. In the endophyte-infected plants, the concentrations of the pyrrolopyrazine alkaloid peramine depended on the interaction between CO2 and N fertilization such that peramine concentrations declined with increasing N at ambient CO2 but remained roughly constant across N levels at elevated CO2. A similar pattern was seen for the ergot alkaloid ergovaline. The biochemical responses of perennial ryegrass to elevated CO2 are clearly modified by the presence of endophytic fungi.  相似文献

It is argued that groups of similarly coloured species of coccinellids are Müllerian mimicry rings. This is based on a synthesis of the literature about the nature of their biology and aposematic colour patterns, their highly developed chemical defence and the responses of bird predators to them. The system of multiple mimicry ‘rings’ is illustrated for the Dutch coccinellid fauna. Some polymorphic species, including Adalia, exhibit red forms and black melanic forms which are apparently components of different putative mimicry rings. A similar reasoning is put forward with regard to the orange and the black forms of the soldier beetle Cuntharis livida. Hypotheses involving spatial variation in comimics, as have been developed to account for some other cases of polymorphic Miillerian mimicry, predict that sympatric polymorphic species exhibiting similar sets of phenotypes will show parallels in their geographical variation. This is tested for A. bipunctata and A. decempunctata in The Netherlands. On this local scale there is no parallel variation; A. bipunctata exhibits marked geographical differentiation whereas A. decempunctata shows a general uniformity in morph frequency. Observations on their population biology show that only in A. bipunctata is there a major spring period of adult reproduction on shrubs exposed to direct sunshine. Previous work has demonstrated an influence of thermal melanism in this period of the life cycle. It is suggested that local responses in species such as A. bipunctata may reflect a partial ‘escape’ from stabilizing aposematic selection. The basis of a steep cline found in C. livida, which opposes one in A. bipunctata, is unknown and unlikely to be related to mimicry. There is some evidence that the polymorphism is influenced by non-random mating. When species and communities of coccinellids are considered on a wide geographical scale many observations about their colour patterns and spatial variation, especially those of Dobzhansky, support an interaction between selection favouring mimetic resemblance and forms of climatic selection, especially thermal melanism. The polymorphism in Adalia is discussed in relation to a system of multiple mimicry rings and to Thompson's recent theoretical treatment of the maintenance of some polymorphisms for warning coloration by a balance between aposematic and apostatic selection. This becomes more tenable in coccinellids because of evidence that bird predators show a variable response to them. Frequency-independent selection arising from thermal melanism can provide the basis of spatial variation in equilibrium points. An alternative to such a hypothesis is one in which differences in unpalatability between species of coccinellids are emphasized (after experiments of Pasteels and colleagues). Some less unpalatable species such as Adalia may have responded to periods of prolonged disruptive selection acting in a frequency-dependent way to promote polymorphic mimicry associated with different modal colour patterns and intermediate in nature between classical Batesian and Müllerian mimicry. The likely occurrence of a supergene controlling polymorphism in some coccinellids is consistent with such an explanation.  相似文献

The epidermal salt-secreting glands of Limonium (Plumbaginaceae)are enclosed in a cuticular envelope. Ions and metabolites enterthe glands from the mesophyll through gaps in the cuticularenvelope, the transfusion zones. Net influxes of ions acrossthe transfusion zone were calculated from measurements of secretionrates and transfusion zone areas. When leaves of L. pereziiF. T. Hubb. were treated with 300 mol m–3 NaCl, transfusionzone influxes of Na+ K+, Ca++ and Cl as high as 7?0?10–5,1.7?10–5, 5?8?10–7 and 8.5?10–5 mol m–2s–1 respectively, were calculated. Abstract. The development of water impermeable seed coats of two members each of the leguminoseae family [ Crotalaria spectabilis Roth, Sesbania exaltata (Raf) Cory] and the malvaceae family [Anoda cristata (L.) Schlecht, Abutilon theophrasti Medic.] was investigated. Highest peroxidase (POD) activity of Anoda and Abutilon seed coat extracts was highly correlated with the developmental stages when soluble phenolics were maximally converted into lignin. Although extensive lignification occurred during seed coat development in both legumes, the patterns of POD activity, soluble phenolic levels and time of lignification were different from those of the malvaceous species. POD activity levels in developing coats of the malvaceous seeds increased as phenolics decreased. Both POD activity and phenolic levels decreased during seed coat development of the legumes. POD was immunocytochemically and immunochemically detected in seed coats of all four species; however, results for polyphenol oxidase were negative. The results confirmed POD involvement in lignification of leguminous and malvaecous species and support and extend our earlier view that POD is involved in lignin formation during development of impermeable seed coats.  相似文献

  • 1 Larvae of the black swallowtail butterfly, Papilio polyxenes Fabr., from New York and Costa Rica were reared under the same environmental conditions on Daucus carota L. and Spananthe paniculata Jacq. (Umbelliferae), which are the host plants most commonly used by the two populations, respectively. Feeding rates, growth rates and feeding efficiencies of the fifth instar larvae were measured by standard techniques.
  • 2 Larvae from each population grew faster on the host-plant species from their region of origin than did larvae from the other population, though differences on S.paniculata were not significant. On D.carota the faster growth by New York larvae was attributable to greater efficiency. On S.paniculata, by contrast, the somewhat faster growth by Costa Rican larvae seemed to have resulted chiefly from faster feeding. The two populations have thus come to differ in metabolic and, probably, behavioural responses to host plants.
  • 3 S.paniculata was a superior host plant for larvae of both populations, even though the total energy, nitrogen and water content of its foliage was similar to that of D.carota.
  • 4 These results are consistent with the hypothesis that insects in the two populations have diverged in adaptation to their host plants following curtailment of gene flow between them as the species colonized Central America from the north.

SYNOPSIS. Swimming is a common and important component of vertebratebehavior. Therefore the study of swimming form and functionis essential to understanding vertebrate biology. An interactiveprocess between biologists and hydrodynamicists has proven extremelysuccessful in providing such understanding. This process startswith a definition of forces that may act on an animal; viscousand pressure drag, acceleration reaction, lift and body inertia,and ground reaction. Dominant force components are selectedon the basis of ground contact, Reynolds number, reduced frequency,and shape. Conservation of momentum requires forces and theirmoments be in balance leading to models describing swimmingmotions and associated forces. These provide the bridge betweenthe hydrodynamics studies and biological applications. Numericalsolutions to models estimate thrust and drag, and rates of working,which are several times greater than expected for manmade non-flexingbodies. These solutions are used in prediction of optimal two-phaseswimming behaviors, alternating high resistance swimming withlow resistance behavior such as gliding. Qualitative predictionsfrom models define optimal forms for various behaviors and habitats.Optimal forms tend to be mutually exclusive, providing benchmarksfor analyses relating form and function in an ecological context.Life history patterns are also affected by locomotor capabilitiesof various morphologies. Scale effects limit the distributionof propulsors. Numerical solutions to models are probably onlygood within an order of magnitude because of the assumptionsin their formulation, but rankings of mechanisms or organismsare adequate for comparative study. Predictions must be temperedby consideration of non-locomotor function, developmental limitationsof structural options, and non-equilibrium community structures.  相似文献

In Freycinetia reineckei the staminate flower (on the staminate spikes) comprises 3 or 4 (sometimes 2) stamens and a pistillode with 2 (sometimes 4) carpellodes, and the pistillate flower (on the pistillate spikes) is formed of a pistil with 2 (sometimes 4) carpels and of 3 or 4 (sometimes 2) staminodes. This perfect floral homology, also observed in all the other species that were studied with both pistillate and staminate material, strongly suggests that the flower of Freycinetia is basically and potentially bisexual, and may explain the occasional sexual lability and bisexuality of that flower (occurrence of both pistillate and staminate inflorescences, and/or of bisexual inflorescences with bisexual flowers and/or unisexual flowers, on the same individuals) in some species, and also the frequent occurrence of bisexual spikes in this species. These may be partitioned into pistillate, staminate, mixed and sterile zones. In the pistillate zones the flowers have the same aspect and structure as the pistillate flowers. In the staminate zones the flowers generally comprise 3 or 4 (sometimes 2) stamens and a ‘semi-pistil’ some have both stamens and staminodes. The semi-pistils are intermediate between pistils and pistillodes in length, aspect and structure, but always have placentas and ovules. In the mixed zones the flowers are generally formed of a pistil and 3 or 4 (sometimes 2) stamens, and are therefore true hermaphrodite flowers; some have both stamens and staminodes. In the sterile zones the flowers comprise a semi-pistil and 3 or 4 (sometimes 2) staminodes. The staminodes are anatomically very similar to the stamens, especially in the staminate, mixed, and sterile zones, in which they exhibit a wide range of variation in length, aspect and structure. The perfect floral homology as generic character on one hand, and the occasional bisexuality both with and without bisexual flowers and other aspects of sex expression (e.g. occurrence of both pistillate and staminate shoots on the same individuals) in some species on the other hand, seem to indicate that Freycinetia is a basically monoecious, sex changing genus.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Food web manipulation, by removal of planktivorous or benthivorous fish, is a promising method for reducing phytoplankton concentrations in shallow lakes. The part that nutrients may play in the success of such a measure is not well documented.
2. In this study, we analysed the flow of phosphorus through the food web of the shallow, eutrophic Lake Wolderwijd/Nuldernauw. Our studies occurred in the years 1981 (when a bloom of cyanobacteria occurred) and 1987 (no bloom); a hypothetical situation was also examined in which most of the bream are assumed to be removed.
3. The analysis shows that the success of biomanipulation is probably due not only to an increased grazing pressure on the phytoplankton, but also to a decreased availability of phosphorus. The reason for this is the removal of detrital phosphorus by increased sedimentation as a result of a predicted increase in growth of macrophytes after biomanipulation.  相似文献
