We describe primers and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) conditions to amplify four dinucleotide, one trinucleotide, and three tetranucleotide microsatellite DNA loci from the bobcat (Lynx rufus). The primers were tested on 22 individuals collected from a population located within southwestern Georgia (USA). The primer pairs developed in this study yielded an average of 7.4 alleles per locus (range four to 10), an average observed heterozygosity of 0.60 (range 0.40 to 0.76), and an average polymorphic information content of 0.70 (range 0.51 to 0.78).  相似文献

A unique community of four syntopic eagle species exists in north‐central Kazakhstan. Questions about behaviour and genetics in these four species would benefit from the development of microsatellite markers. We isolated eight polymorphic microsatellite repeats (AAAG)n from the eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) genome using a hybridization enrichment technique. These loci revealed moderate diversity in a local population of eastern imperial eagles (observed heterozygosity 0.26–0.78), and were also polymorphic in steppe eagles (A. nipalensis) and white‐tailed sea eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla). These primers may be polymorphic in other species of Aquila and Haliaeetus eagles.  相似文献

Much phylogenetic information has been derived from the analysis of sequence similarity in genes and proteins. These data are generally considered to be more reliable than an examination of the phylogenetic distribution of similar biologically active molecules. However, molecules can provide significant phylogenetic information when accompanied by a careful analysis of their structure, synthesis, genetics and function. Molecules may be highly structurally and functionally constrained. Thus, similar or even chemically identical molecules may be unrelated, and this may be discernible only by examination of information beyond the simple structure of the molecule. Phylogenetic variation in the synthesis of tyrosine and lysine demonstrates that chemical identity of molecules may be brought about by unrelated synthetic pathways. The widespread distribution of collagen triple helices is shown to result from convergence under structural and functional constraints. This is demonstrated by an examination of the steric constraints upon collagens and the presence of several independent families of collagen genes. Lysyl oxidase crosslinking occurs in several unrelated proteins, indicating that similarity in the post-translational modification of proteins is not evidence of homology.  相似文献

Studies on the floral morphology of macabo cocoyam (Xanthosoma sugittifolium (L.) Schott) indicated that it required 50 to 70 days for flower formation while fruit maturity took 40 to 60 days after pollination. Among the three types of cocoyams (“white”, “red” and “yellow”), male flowers were more sterile in the “red” and “yellow” types. The spadix consisted of three parts, a bottom pistillate section, a central constricted region with sterile flowers separating the pistil from a third staminate section. The fruiting head formed as a result of hybridisation, is dome shaped and is comprised of a dense cluster of berries. Mean number of berries per fruiting head was 244 ± 40 while the weight of each head was 16.15 ± 6.38 gm. There were an average of 15 ± 6 seeds per berry with 100 seeds weighing 0.0266 ± 0.0048 gm. The longitudinally shaped seed is ridged and grooved like a pumpkin pod when observed under high magnification (400 ×)  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies were used to assess: (1) whether size assortative mating occurred in the New Zealand amphipod Paracalliope fluviatilis and (2) hypotheses developed to explain size assortative mating. We found that assortative mating occurred and that larger females carried more eggs, suggesting they may be more valuable as mates. Laboratory experiments were then used to determine whether: (1) male size influenced the size of the female selected (mechanical constraints hypothesis); (2) male size influenced pairing success in the presence of competition (intrasexual selection hypothesis); (3) take‐overs of females occurred and whether large males were more successful (intrasexual selection hypothesis); (4) guard duration varied relative to male and female size (guard duration hypothesis); and (5) females had control over pairing success and guard duration (intersexual selection hypothesis). Although there was evidence to suggest the existence of intrasexual competition for mates (i.e. both small and large males preferred large females), there was no evidence of overt competition (i.e. takeovers of paired females). There was also no difference with respect to how long small and large males guarded females, but large females were guarded longer by both male size classes. Females handicapped by having their mobility reduced were guarded for the same duration as control females but males were more likely to pair with handicapped females, suggesting that they were easier to amplex. Given the lack of evidence for direct male–male competition or female choice, we suggest that assortative mating may be the result of: (1) indirect competition (e.g. in situ large males may be better able to access and amplex the largest females) or (2) female resistance to small males in combination with higher costs that small males may incur in securing large females. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 92 , 173–181.  相似文献

Eco-hydrological controls on summertime convective rainfall triggers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Triggers of summertime convective rainfall depend on numerous interactions and feedbacks, often compounded by spatial variability in soil moisture and its impacts on vegetation function, vegetation composition, terrain, and all the complex turbulent entrainment processes near the capping inversion. To progress even within the most restricted and idealized framework, many of the governing processes must be simplified and parameterized. In this work, a zeroth‐order representation of the dynamical processes that control convective rainfall triggers – namely land surface fluxes of heat and moisture – is proposed and used to develop a semianalytical model to explore how differential sensitivities of various ecosystems to soil moisture states modify convective rainfall triggers. The model is then applied to 4 years (2001–2004) of half‐hourly precipitation, soil moisture, environmental, and eddy‐covariance surface heat flux data collected at a mixed hardwood forest (HW), a maturing planted loblolly pine forest (PP), and an abandoned old field (OF) experiencing the same climatic and edaphic conditions. We found that the sensitivity of PP to soil moisture deficit enhances the trigger of convective rainfall relative to HW and OF, with enhancements of about 25% and 30% for dry moisture states, and 5% and 15% for moist soil moisture states, respectively. We discuss the broader implications of these findings on potential modulations of convective rainfall triggers induced by projected large‐scale changes in timberland composition within the Southeastern United States.  相似文献
