Extensive surveys of possible aphid habitats in South Australia indicated that irrigated perennial grass pastures in the Mount Lofty Ranges and Lower Murray Valley were summer refuges for Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Large numbers of aphids build up in these pastures each year during autumn (April and May) with numbers peaking in May. The size of the May peak was related to the number of aphids surviving the summer. The proportions of alates were highest in May and August/September. Both peaks coincided with a photoperiod of between 11.2 and 11.5 h, and partial correlations suggested that aphid density, photoperiod and temperature were all significant determinants of alate production.  相似文献

Daily energy expenditure of Wheatears Oenanthe oenanthe during the brood rearing period was measured using the doubly-labelled water technique. The average daily metabolic rate (ADMR) (± 1 s.d.) for 24 individuals was 6.24 ± 1.17 cm3 CO2/g/h, which corresponds to 95.3 ± 17.0 kJ/day (RQ = 0.75) for a bird of average mass (24.3 g).
There were no significant differences in daily energy expenditure between the sexes, nor between first-year and older birds. Individual males with longer tarsi had lower ADMR but raised larger broods. The ADMR increased at lower ambient temperatures, but this effect disappeared when the positive correlation with rainfall was taken into account. There was no relationship between the natural brood-size and parental daily energy expenditure. A positive correlation between ADMR and the time spent hopping and pecking suggests that foraging activity may account for some of the variability between individuals. The daily change in body-mass was not related to either the individual's age or its sex, and overall was not correlated with the level of daily energy expenditure. For birds examined on the same day, individuals with a higher ADMR had a greater loss of body-mass, which appears to be a high risk strategy. However, Wheatears also exhibited an ability to increase body-mass in conjunction with a drop in their daily energy expenditure.  相似文献

1. Rapidly advancing geographical information systems (GIS) technologies are forcing a careful evaluation of the roles and biases of landscape and traditional site-based perspectives on assessments of aquatic communities. Viewing the world at very different scales can lead to seeming contradictions about the nature of specific ecological systems. In the case of Michigan trout streams, landscape analyses suggest a predictable community shaped by large-scale patterns in hydrology and geology. Most site-based studies, however, suggest these communities are highly variable in structure over time, and are strongly shaped by site-specific physical and biological dynamics. As the real world is comprised of processes operating both at local and landscape scales, an analytical framework for integrating these paradigms is desirable.
2. Decomposition of variances by factorial ANOVA into time, space and time–space interaction terms can provide a conceptual and analytical model for integrating processes operating at landscape and local scales. Using this approach, long-term data sets were examined for three insects and two fishes common in Michigan trout streams. Each taxon had a unique variance structure, and the observed variance structure was highly dependent upon sample size.
3. Both spatially extensive designs with little sampling over time (typical of many GIS studies) and temporally extensive designs with little or no spatial sampling (typical of population and community studies), are biased in terms of their view of the relative importance of local and landscape factors. The necessary, but in many cases costly, solution is to develop and analyse data sets that are both spatially and temporally extensive.  相似文献

1. The restricted scale of most prior studies of genetic diversity in daphniid populations provides limited information on the geographical patterning of gene frequencies. The present study addresses this gap by examining allozymic divergence in populations of the most broadly distributed daphniid in the warm temperate regions of North America, Daphnia obtusa, across its range.
2. Local populations of this species show the gene frequency differentiation typical of other daphniids. In contrast to other daphniids with broad distributions, however, further divergence is apparent at a larger geographical scale, with North American D. obtusa fragmented into three lineages showing largely allopatric distributions. The three lineages are based primarily on allele frequency shifts at three polymorphic loci and are represented by eastern, central and south-western groupings.
3. Because of this pattern of differentiation, there is no simple monotonic relationship between geographical distance and genetic divergence. Instead, local metapopulations belonging to a specific lineage show little genetic divergence over several thousand km, while marked shifts in gene frequency occur over a few hundred km in regions where different lineages are in contact.  相似文献

Tobacco callus fed L-tyrosine-UL?14C was sampled at 3-day intervals for 15 days, homogenized and studied with respect to distribution of incorporated radioactivity. The supernatant obtained by centrifuging of the homogenates at 270 g contained the bulk of the radioactivity although significant activity was also detected in the pellet. Sucrose density gradient centrifugation of the supernatant showed over 90% of the recovered label to be associated with a fraction designated as “less dense than mitochondria”, with the remainder being found in the fraction identified as “mitochondria”. During tissue culture, virtually all of the radioactivity in the fraction “less dense than mitochondria” was recovered in the supernatant obtained by centrifugation at 100,000 g. From 4 to 18% of the labeling in the 100,000 g supernatant fraction was attributable to tyrosine-containing protein, and the rest to free tyrosine and unidentified anionic constituents. The highest proportions of radio-activity in the 270 g pellet were associated with substances extractable with NaCl, pronase, 4.6 N NaOH, and acetolyzing reagent. Low but substantial labeling characterized the extracts obtained with Triton X-100 and 1 N NaOH. The final unextractable residue contained 20% of the 270 g pellet radioactivity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The ultrastructure of the cortex beneath the fission furrow of dividing Stentor coeruleus was examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. During division, basal bodies, axonemes, and km fibers beneath the furrow were absorbed near the moving primordial oral apparatus, and a circumferential band of microtubules and filaments was formed at the base of the furrow. The location and orientation of this fibrous band suggest that it may be an important component of the cytokinetic machinery. Treatment with vinblastine sulfate (4 × 10-5 M) disrupted the circumferential microtubules and blocked division, which is consistent with this hypothesis.  相似文献

In Theravada Buddhism temporal power is viewed as indispensible to the creation of political and economic conditions for spiritiual advancement. But it is a necessary evil. The Buddhist response to the misuse of power is to subordinate it to Buddhist ethics and to deny politics autonomy from religion. Yut, in Buddhist Thailand, there is another tradition which justifies pragmatism and even the use of force. This paper concerns a local leader in Northern Thailand who has attempted to achieve some sort of balance between these to contradictory traditions – a goal that has proved elusive.  相似文献

The paper reports the occurrence of whitish 'leucistic' forms in populations of Barnacle Geese Branta leucopsis. A total of 15 (including 11 in the last 21 years) have been reported in the population breeding in Svalbard and wintering in the Solway Firth, northern Britain, whereas the two other populations, though much larger, have produced only one bird of the same type between them in the last 30 years. Leucism is controlled by a single, recessive allele.
The median lifespan of leucistic birds is 2–3 years, compared to 8–10 years for normal plumaged birds. This is because they are sought out by (illegal) hunters. There is no evidence that there is any difference in pairing or breeding performance between white and normal birds, though one male, which is still alive aged 18 years, has produced 13 young; this performance is matched fay less than 2% of normal geese.
It is suggested that the Svalbard population was established recently, from a few founders from the Siberian population; if one or two of these carried the allele controlling leucism, this would explain its much higher prevalence in this population than in the other discrete groups of Barnacle Geese.  相似文献

Stimulation of the rate of photosynthesis at 2·0 kPaO2 in comparison with 21 kPa O2 and carbohydrate accumulationover 4h were measured during exposure of sunflower (Helianthusannuus L.) and rape (Brassica napus L.), grown at 30 °Cand 13 °C, to temperatures between 7 °C and 35 °C.The effect of reducing source: sink ratio by shading on theresponse of photosynthetic rate to temperature was also determined.Stimulation of photosynthesis by 2·0 kPa O2 in comparisonwith 21 kPa O2 decreased over 4 h at cool temperatures in sunflowerplants grown at 30 °C but not in rape grown at 30 °C.Stimulation did not decrease over 4 h in plants grown at 13CC. Sucrose was the main carbohydrate accumulated over 4 h;its accumulation increased with decreasing temperature. Starchaccumulation either decreased or remained the same with decreasingtemperature. In plants grown at 30 °C more carbohydrateaccumulated between 8 °C and 21 °C in sunflower thanin rape, but more carbohydrate accumulated at 30 °C in rapethan in sunflower. In plants grown at 13 °C much less carbohydrateaccumulated between 13 °C and 23 °C than in plants grownat 30 °C. Photosynthetic rate in plants grown at 30 °Cexposed to between 20 °C and 35 °C over 32 h (14 h light-10h dark-8 h light), declined over 32 h at 20 °C and 25 °Cin sunflower and at 20 °C in rape. This fall over 32 h,especially at 20 °C in sunflower, was significantly reducedby shading the rest of the plant. Shading had little effecton photosynthetic rate above 25 °C. The work confirms thatlow temperature imposes a sink-limitation on photosynthesiswhich occurs at higher temperatures in sunflower than in rape.This limitation may be relieved by decreasing the source:sinkratio.
