Seedlings of Eucalyptus pauciflora, were grown in open-top chambers fumigated with ambient and elevated [CO2], and were divided into two populations using 10% light transmittance screens. The aim was to separate the effects of timing of light interception, temperature and [CO2] on plant growth. The orientation of the screens exposed plants to a similar total irradiance, but incident during either cold mornings (east-facing) or warm afternoons (west-facing). Following the first autumn freezing event elevated CO2-grown plants had 10 times more necrotic leaf area than ambient CO2 plants. West-facing plants had significantly greater (25% more) leaf damage and lower photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) in comparison with east-facing plants. Following a late spring freezing event east-facing elevated CO2 plants suffered a greater sustained loss in Fv/Fm than west-facing elevated CO2- and ambient CO2-grown plants. Stomatal conductance was lower under elevated CO2 than ambient CO2 except during late spring, with the highest leaf temperatures occurring in west-facing plants under elevated CO2. These higher leaf temperatures apparently interfered with cold acclimation thereby enhancing frost damage and reducing the ability to take advantage of optimal growing conditions under elevated CO2.  相似文献

When seedlings of the root parasite Striga asiatica Benth. (=S. lutea Lour.) are grown in0 the absence of the host the radiclegrows to a length of about 4 mm. On emergence the radicle showsa strong curvature which is brought about by a failure of cellextension on one side. The inhibited cells generally remainun-extended throughout the life of the seedling. Neither thesodium salt of indole-3-acetic acid nor Inhibitor-ß(which is present in the seeds), induced permanent inhibitionsto the radicle cells when applied externally, as did the endogenouscurvature factor. 2: 3: 5-tri-iodobenzoic acid reduced curvatureby promoting extension of the normally inhibited cells.  相似文献

Tomato roots with brown root rot showed three types of lesion: cortical rot of fine roots, 'corky root', and basal stem rot. The fungi most commonly isocated from diseased roots were: Colletotrichum atramentarium, Chaetomium spp., Cephalosporium spp., Volutella ciliata , and a grey mycelial fungus sometimes producing pycnidia ( Pyrenochaeta sp.). Other fungi isocated less frequently were: Myrothecium roridum, Petriella asymmetrica, Trichoderma airide, Phytophthora spp., Alternaria sp. and Fusarium spp. There were differences between the numbers of each species isocated from the three types of lesion in steamed and in unsteamed soils, and some seasonal variation.
Inoculation experiments with seedlings in vitro showed that Ckaetomium cochliodes and Petriella asymmetrica could infect radicles. On older plants growing in soil Colletotrichum atramentarium was the only effective pathogen. Culture filtrates from C. atramentarium, Chaetomium cochliodes , and P. asymmetrica decreased root growth when tested in vitro. Leachates from loam and a loam-manure mixture decreased the growth of tomato root-tip cultures; the effect of these leachates was altered by autoclaving.  相似文献

The rise of the early intervention paradigm in psychotic disorders represents a maturing of the therapeutic approach in psychiatry, as it embraces practical preventive strategies which are firmly established in mainstream health care. Early intervention means better access and systematic early delivery of existing and incremental improvements in knowledge rather than necessarily requiring dramatic and elusive breakthroughs. A clinical staging model has proven useful and may have wider utility in psychiatry. The earliest clinical stages of psychotic disorder are non-specific and multidimensional and overlap phenotypically with the initial stages of other disorders. This implies that treatment should proceed in a stepwise fashion depending upon safety, response and progression. Withholding treatment until severe and less reversible symptomatic and functional impairment have become entrenched represents a failure of care. While early intervention in psychosis has developed strongly in recent years, many countries have made no progress at all, and others have achieved only sparse coverage. The reform process has been substantially evidence-based, arguably more so than other system reforms in mental health. However, while evidence is necessary, it is insufficient. It is also a by-product as well as a catalyst of reform. In early psychosis, we have also seen the evidence-based paradigm misused to frustrate overdue reform. Mental disorders are the chronic diseases of the young, with their onset and maximum impact in late adolescence and early adult life. A broader focus for early intervention would solve many of the second order issues raised by the early psychosis reform process, such as diagnostic uncertainty despite a clear-cut need for care, stigma and engagement, and should be more effective in mobilizing community support. Early intervention represents a vital and challenging project for early adopters in global psychiatry to consider.  相似文献

An important aspect of the evolution of carpel closure, or angiospermy, is the relationship between pollen tube growth patterns and internalization of the pollen‐tube pathway. True carpel closure, involving postgenital fusion of inner carpel margins, is inferred to have arisen once within the ancient order Nymphaeales, in the common ancestor of Nymphaeaceae. We studied pollen tube development, from pollination to fertilization, in a natural population of Nymphaea odorata, using hand pollinations and timed flower collections. Pollen germinates in stigmatic secretions within 15 min and pollen tubes enter subdermal transmitting tissue within an hour, following wide intercellular spaces towards the zone of postgenital fusion. At the zone of fusion they turn downwards to grow in narrow spaces between interlocked cells and then wander freely to ovules within ovarian secretions. The pollen‐tube pathway is 2–6 mm long and upper ovules are first penetrated 2.5 h after pollination. Pollen tubes grow at rates of approximately 1 mm/h whether in stigmatic fluid, transmitting tissues or ovarian secretions. Pollen‐tube pathways are structurally diverse across Nymphaeales, yet their pollen tubes have similar morphologies and rapid growth rates.
