Of the weeds that were found in banana production areas, only Asystasia gangetica was parasitised by Radopholus similis; Helicotylenchus multicinctus and Hoplolaimus pararobustus were able to parasitise all weed species. Field trials were carried out in Cote d'Ivoire to assess the potential for using nematode-free micro-propagated banana plants following cultural and chemical methods for nematode control. Banana (Musa acuminata) cv. Poyo was examined for nematodes after weed fallow, flooding and chemical treatment. Before replanting bananas, nematode assays showed that: i) all nematode species declined but were not eliminated after a 1,3-dichloropropene soil treatment; ii) H. multicinctus, H. pararobustus and Cephalenchus emarginatus were still present after either a 2-year weed fallow (dominated by Chromolaena odorata or Asystasia gangetica) or a 10-week flooding; iii) R. similis did not persist after fallowing or flooding. All nematode species were found in plots treated with 1,3-dichloropropene and that had been planted with bullheads, suckers or nematode-free micropropagated plants. After both fallow and flooding, R. similis was reintroduced on infested planting materials (bullheads and suckers) even when they were pre-treated with a nematicide. When fallow and flooded plots were planted with nematode-free materials (vitro-plants), R. similis did not appear in the roots for two vegetative cycles. The other species, still present in the soil, invaded the roots and increased slowly in numbers. These results were confirmed in commercial banana plantations.  相似文献

[14C]Sucrose was found to be the predominant component of the14C-photosynthates that accumulated in the free space of decapitatedstems of P. vulgaris plants. The 14C-photosynthates appearedto occupy the entire free-space volume of the stems at totalsugar concentrations in the range of 3–12 mM. The free-spacesugar levels were found to rapidly decline once photosynthatetransfer to the stems was halted. Moreover, it was found thatestimates of the rate of in vitro sucrose uptake by the stemscould account fully for the decline in free-space sugar levels.Overall, the evidence indicated that at least part of the radialpathway of photosynthate transfer in bean stems involved thestem apoplast. It is tentatively proposed that, based on celland tissue distribution of 14C-photosynthates, the apoplasticpathway extends from the membrane boundary of the sieve element/companion-cellcomplex to all other cells of the stem. The translocation of lead and copper was studied in two speciesof submerged aquatic angiosperm, Potamogeton crispus L. andPotamogeton pectinatus L. A perspex container incorporatinga potters' clay seal around the stems of intact plants was designedfor the chemical separation of the shoot and root environmentsduring 11–21 d treatment periods. Metal solutions wereadded to the root or shoot environments and concentrations weremonitored in waters and sediments. A technique was developedfor the direct quantitative analysis of metals in small (0.02–0.2mg) segments of water plant tissue, using the graphite rod attachmentto an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Many individuals with mental illnesses are troubled by self-stigma and the subsequent processes that accompany this stigma: low self-esteem and self-efficacy. “Why try” is the overarching phenomenon of interest here, encompassing self-stigma, mediating processes, and their effect on goal-related behavior. In this paper, the literature that explains “why try” is reviewed, with special focus on social psychological models. Self-stigma comprises three steps: awareness of the stereotype, agreement with it, and applying it to one’s self. As a result of these processes, people suffer reduced self-esteem and self-efficacy. People are dissuaded from pursuing the kind of opportunities that are fundamental to achieving life goals because of diminished self-esteem and self-efficacy. People may also avoid accessing and using evidence-based practices that help achieve these goals. The effects of self-stigma and the “why try” effect can be diminished by services that promote consumer empowerment.  相似文献

The Lapwing Vanellus vanellus has traditionally been regarded as a monogamous, single brooded species, defending a single territory. Recent studies involving individually recognizable Lapwings have begun to challenge the ubiquity of these statements, with high frequencies of polygyny and the production of second broods being reported. Breeding Lapwings were studied in Upper Teesdale, County Durham, U.K., between 1993 and 1995, where both adults and chicks had been individually colour-ringed since 1990. A total of 90 territorial males and 64 females were intensively studied during the 3 years. Overall, 30% of territorial males had more than one mate in any year, with 19% more adult males than yearling males mating polygynously. On two occasions, polygynous males simultaneously defended two territories. Five females attempted to produce second broods, and one was polyandrous.  相似文献

EVALUATION OF OLFACTORY INTENSITY: COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TWO METHODS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Two experimental procedures recommended for the evaluation of the psychophysical characteristics of odorous compounds, olfactory matching with the 1-butanol scale and cross-modality matching with the finger span are compared. The intensity of ethyl butyrate and guaiacol solutions presented at four different concentration levels was evaluated by a panel of sixteen subjects over five repetitions using the two methods. Each stimulus was delivered to the subject from a Teflon bag through a nose-shaped glass sniffing port.
The discrimination ability, repeatability, panel homogeneity and within-subject variability of the methods were assessed. Results indicate that with both methods, subjects were able to highly discriminate the presented concentration levels of the odorants. There were no great difference in repeatability and the same individual variability was observed between both methods. However, the smaller within-subject variability highlighted for the 1-butanol scale method suggested that this method is potentially more powerful than finger-span method.  相似文献

Evidence is presented for the binding of the quinone oxidation product of the monohydric phenol substrate, 4-hydroxyanisole, to mushroom tyrosinase. Column chromatography and SDS-PAGE separation showed labelling of the enzyme when incubated with 14C ring-labelled 4-hydroxyanisole. It is proposed that covalent binding to the enzyme and other proteins is through reaction of accessible nucleophilic groups, including thiols and amino groups, with the anisylquinone. This reductive addition enables the indirect generation of the catecholic substrate, which acts as an electron donor for the bicupric active site of met-tyrosinase and explains the lag kinetics of tyrosinase oxidation of non-cyclizing substrates. The effects of diluting the enzyme or the addition of amino acids on the lag period was consistent with a mechanism involving indirect generation of the dihydric phenol, which acts as the met-enzyme-recruiting substrate.  相似文献
