Abstract. 1. Mutualistic associations can vary over spatial and ecological gradients. For herbivorous insects that engage in mutualisms with ants, plant quality can be a particularly important source of variation, because of the upward transfer of nutrients from plants to herbivores to ants.

A previous study demonstrated that mutualistic ants, Formica obscuripes , exert a top-down effect on the carbon and nitrogen concentrations (stoichiometry) in an herbivorous membracid, Publilia modesta . We characterised the consequences of mutualism for carbon and nitrogen stoichiometry between the same species pair, yet on an alternative, geographically-distinct host plant.
3. We found no top-down effect of ants on the carbon or nitrogen in the herbivore, but a strong, bottom-up effect of individual plants on membracid nitrogen concentration.
4. These results suggests that spatial heterogeneity in host plant traits, and ultimately the diet breadth of herbivore mutualists, may be important factors mediating stoichiometric patterns in mutualistic associations. 相似文献

Invertebrate diet of the Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis [undulata] macqueenii in Abu Dhabi from calibrated faecal analysis 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The ecology of the Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis [undulata] macqueenii is poorly known and populations are declining due to hunting and habitat loss. As wintering populations in Abu Dhabi may be limited by habitat and food, we studied the diet using calibrated faecal analysis. Prey were categorized into 16 groups and fed to captive birds under controlled conditions. We calculated the recovery rates of prey following digestion and identified consistent fragments for each group. Wild Houbara Bustard faeces were collected and examined for key fragments, and initial prey intake was calibrated. Plant remains were identified and their contribution was estimated. Fewer than 28% faeces contained >50% plant material by volume and only 12% contained 95% or more. Numerically, the most important prey were: ants (64%), large nocturnal tenebrionids (14.5%), small climbing tenebrionids (12%) and diurnal tenebrionids. However, the Tenebrionidae contributed 97% of the animal biomass. The relative proportions of prey in the diet were similar to relative abundance as assessed by pitfall trapping. Estimates of the energetic value of the prey suggested that on average Houbara Bustards must consume around 670 desert invertebrates/day to meet energy needs. The effort required to catch these prey may vary at least ten-fold seasonally. On average plants could provide a further 6.4–14% energy but more work is needed on this. Whether Houbara Bustards wintering in Abu Dhabi are prey-limited depends on prey densities and renewal rates which remain unknown. 相似文献

Abstract: Low adult marten (Martes americana) survival may be one factor limiting their population growth >30 yr after their reintroduction in Wisconsin, USA. We estimated annual adult marten survival at 0.81 in northern Wisconsin, with lower survival during winter (0.87) than summer-fall (1.00). Fisher (Martes pennanti) and raptor kills were infrequent, and each reduced marten adult annual survival <10%. Annual adult survival was similar to or higher than survival in other areas, suggesting that it was not unusually low and therefore did not limit recovery of marten populations in northern Wisconsin. We captured few juvenile martens, suggesting low reproduction or reduced juvenile survival. 相似文献

Climate change can cause major changes to the dynamics of individual species and to those communities in which they interact. One effect of increasing temperatures is on insect voltinism, with the logical assumption that increases in surface temperatures would permit multivoltine species to increase the number of generations per year. Though insect development is primarily driven by temperature, most multivoltine insect species rely on photoperiodic cues, which do not change from year‐to‐year or in response to climate warming, to initiate diapause. Thus, the relationship between climate change and voltinism could be complex. We use a phenology model for grape berry moth, Paralobesia viteana (Clemens), which incorporates temperature‐dependent development and diapause termination, and photoperiod‐dependent diapause induction, to explore historical patterns in year‐to‐year voltinism fluctuations. We then extend this model to predict voltinism under varying scenarios of climate change to show the importance of both the quality and quantity of accumulated heat units. We also illustrate that increases in mean surface temperatures > 2 °C can have dramatic effects on insect voltinism by causing a shift in the ovipositional period that currently is subject to diapause‐inducing photoperiods. 相似文献

Higher plants possess large multigene families encoding secreted class III peroxidase (Prx) proteins. In barley, two Prx cDNAs encoding HvPrx07 and HvPrx08 have been isolated and characterized to some extent with respect to a resistance-mediating function upon attack by the powdery-mildew fungus Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei ( Bgh ). Here we present evidence for the tissue-specific accumulation of a new Prx mRNA, HvPrx40 , in Bgh -attacked epidermis of barley ( Hordeum vulgare ). The encoded protein is predicted to be secreted into the apoplastic space of epidermal cells due to the absence of a C-terminal extension, which distinguishes it from other Prx proteins reported to accumulate in leaf epidermis. Transient overexpression of HvPrx40 enhanced the resistance of wheat ( Triticum aestivum ) and barley against Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici (wheat powdery mildew) and Bgh , respectively. These findings were complemented by transient-induced gene silencing showing hypersusceptibility of barley leaf epidermal cells to Bgh . The local accumulation of oxidized 3,3-diaminobenzidine that reflects H2 O2 production at sites of attempted fungal penetration was not reduced in HvPrx40 -silenced cells, suggesting a role of this peroxidase other than the production of reactive oxygen species. 相似文献
