Treatment of tomato plants with (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammoniumchloride (CCC) reduced their growth in height and d. wt andincreased the number of flowers formed in the first inflorescence.In plants grown at a high temperature with low light, applicationof CCC reduced the incidence of flower abortion in the firstinflorescence. Effects of -cyclopropyl--(4-methoxyphenyl)--(pyrimidin-5-yl)methanol(ancymidol) were similar to those of CCC while a third growthretardant, N-dimethylaminosuccinamic acid (B-9), was effectivein reducing growth in height but was without apparent effecton flower number or flower abortion. An interaction occurred between CCC and GA3 such that effectsof CCC on growth and flowering were reduced when GA was alsoapplied. Yields of diffusible gibberellin-like substances fromthe shoot tips were markedly reduced by treating plants withCCC but were apparently not affected by treating plants withB-9. It is suggested that effects of CCC on flowering in tomatoare mediated, in part at least, through changes in levels ofendogenous gibberellins.  相似文献

Ultrastructural aspects of the development of protein bodies(aleurone grains) in endosperm of grains of two rices differingin protein content are described. Formation of rough endoplasmicreticulum complexes prior to protein deposition was observedonly in the higher protein grain. From 8 days after floweringthree types of protein body were observed, one of which wasrestricted to the peripheral endosperm (sub-aleurone) layers.The higher protein grain had a greater number of protein bodiesand rough endoplasmic reticulum in the endosperm cells thanthe lower protein grain. Increase in total protein with maturitywas the result of increased number of protein bodies ratherthan increase in size; the protein bodies were concentratedin the peripheral endosperm layers.  相似文献

The vitamin B12-producing capacity of micro-organisms isolated from baboon faeces and gastric contents was measured using Lactobacillus leichmannii . The animals were fed either a diet deficient in or supplemented with vitamin B12 (controls). Samples of gastric and small intestinal contents, obtained at laparotomy from two young vitamin B12-deprived baboons, contained varying quantities of vitamin B12. Many of the organisms isolated from these aspirates produced vitamin B12 in vitro . The highest levels of vitamin B12 were produced by anaerobic organisms. Gastric juice samples from vitamin B12 deprived and control baboons contained similar types of organisms with like vitamin B12-producing capacity. The vitamin B12 content, pH and total bacterial counts of gastric juice samples aspirated after a 6 h fast from vitamin B12 deprived baboons were not significantly different from those of the control animals. The pH values of gastric juice samples aspirated 18 h after feeding, however, were significantly lower than those of 6 h fasting samples in both groups. The mean vitamin B12 levels in the total volumes of gastric juice aspirated after each fasting period were similar. The possible involvement of the gastrointestinal flora in the vitamin B12 status of the baboon is discussed.  相似文献

Using seed priming and accelerated ageing techniques, a singlelot of leek (Allium porrum) seeds was manipulated to producefour lots of seeds with different germination performance. Changesin content of the major nucleic acid species in whole seedsand embryos of two of these lots (primed and unprimed), weredetermined over the early stages of germination. The major effectof priming was an increased level of RNA species in the seedsand embryos, and this difference was maintained during germination.Comparison of nucleic acid levels in the dry seeds of thesetwo lots and two others (aged and aged then primed) indicatedthat there was no correlation with germination performance.Similar comparisons of the nucleic acid levels in the embryosof seeds imbibed for 1 d showed only a limited correlation betweenrRNA levels and germination performance. Analysis of these datasuggests that accelerated ageing has an adverse effect uponendosperm cells, which results in the degradation of their nucleicacids during priming. Furthermore, the viability of these agedseeds also falls during priming. The data also indicate thatratios of rRNA to DNA correlate with germination performanceof the four lots of seeds studied. It is proposed that sucha relationship is indicative of the efficiency of a primingtreatment, and may be useful in comparisons of naturally varyingseed lots. The aphid-pathogenic fungus Erynia neoaphidis, as dried fungus-infected aphids, was applied to caged plots of winter wheat infested with cereal aphids at two sites, one in Hertfordshire and the other in Hampshire, in 1983. In each trial, the fungus became established in the aphid populations in the treated plots even though conditions were drier than average and therefore sub-optimal for fungus spread. Treatment applied in the third week of June increased the proportion of infected aphids more than that applied two weeks later at one site, and the early application was the only treatment to have an obvious effect at the other. In spite of the observed effect of treatments on the proportion of infected aphids, the fungus failed to reduce the numbers of aphids relative to those in untreated plots, chiefly because in these plots many aphids were killed by fungi of the same species as that introduced and other related species from natural sources. Artificial introduction of E. neoaphidis acts too slowly and unpredictably to be likely to form a practical alternative to conventional insecticides for cereal aphid control.  相似文献

Twelve previously described shrubby species of Aloé L. from Kenya, Congo, Tanzania and Uganda were investigated using a multidisciplinary. approach. Half of the species were found to be tetraploids (24, 28), and because of the rarity ot tetrapolody in the genus it is suggested that these are very closely related and of common origin. Studies of their gross morphology and leaf surface sculpturing reveal clinical variation patterns. These patterns indicate the diploid species likely to be similar to the ancestor of the tetraploids, and the geographic region where the chromosome doubling probably occurred. Variations in the composition of the leaf exudates largely confirm the conclusions drawn from the cytological and anatomical observations. A taxonomic revision based on the experimental findings changes the status of Rift Valley forms of A. kedongensis to a subspecies of A. nyeriensis and also enlarges the latter to include A. ngobitensis .  相似文献

We present cross-cultural data on the existence of a pervasive institutional and ideological complex of male supremacy in band and village sociocultural systems, and we identify warfare as the most important cause of this complex. We explain the perpetuation of warfare in band and village society and its interaction with selective female infanticide as a response to the need to regulate population growth in the absence of effective or less costly alternatives. Our hypothesis is supported by a demographic analysis of 561 local band and village populations from 112 societies.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. In populations of Euglena gracilis strain Z synchronized by cultivation on a repetitive light-dark cycle, chloroplasts undergo cyclic changes in structure. During most of the light period chloroplasts are relatively compact with closely appressed lamellae; during the dark (division) period the chloroplasts become quite distended. This change persists for at least one cycle even when the cells are left in continuous light, suggesting that the periodicity may be related more to the age of the cell than to a direct effect of light. In addition, the pyrenoid in synchronized cells has a transient existence, being present only in the first half of the light period.  相似文献

Abstract The fluorochrome Auramine O has been evaluated as a fluorescent probe for components of the endomembrane system of living plant cells. At 0.001% w/v the compound did not inhibit seedling growth or cytoplasmic streaming but stained the nuclear envelope, endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. The three-dimensional, structural interrelationships of these organelles in living tissues could be resolved after minimal tissue preparation. The method is also a valuable control treatment for use in conjunction with electron microscope fixation procedures. It provides a rapid means of examining dynamic changes in the endomembrane system associated with cell development and differentiation and could have application in monitoring the effects of applied physiological or chemical stress.  相似文献
