The who and why of pain: analysis by social class.

Physicians with an interest in pain have long suggested that the poor complain more and have a higher prevalence of neuroticism than do higher social groups. This assumption was tested by analysing the pain patterns in 500 consecutive patients attending a pain relief clinic. Results implied that scores for presenting pain, anxiety, and depression were similar to all social groups. After treatment scores for residual pain were significantly lower in all social classes, with greatest reduction in classes III, IV, and V. Almost identical results were obtained in a subgroup of patients with cancer but not in a subgroup with sciatica. That patients from the lower social classes have a higher perception of pain and are more neurotic than other group is a myth, probably resulting from poor communication between clinicians and patients of dissimilar socioeconomic class.     

Comparison of whole-cell protein electrophoretic profiles of Haemophilus influenzae: implementation of a microcomputer mainframe linked system and description of a new similarity coefficient

A microcomputer mainframe linked system is described which allows video camera data capture and storage of one-dimensional whole-cell protein electrophoresis gel images, processing of normalized traces to produce a similarity matrix, and analysis of the matrix using the commercial cluster analysis program CLUSTAN. A new similarity coefficient is introduced which takes into account both band position and intensity. Forty-five strains of Haemophilus influenzae, including the eight biotypes and six serotypes, were analyzed using this system. Results demonstrated groupings which are consistent with known genetic relationships.     

Nile crocodiles, Crocodylus niloticus, and estuarine crocodiles, Crocodylus porosus, show similar osmoregulatory responses on exposure to seawater

1. Nile crocodiles, reared in fresh water and exposed acutely to seawater, suffer marked dehydration and hypernatraemia. Cloacal urine osmolarity and potassium concentration increased markedly but urine sodium remains low. 2. Hypernatraemia is increased when secretion from the lingual salt glands is prevented. 3. C. niloticus appears not to drink seawater. 4. Similarities in osmoregulatory response between estuarine and Nile crocodiles suggest that the lingual salt glands of C. niloticus are functional in salt water, playing an important role in sodium balance. 5. Significant differences in the function of the renal/cloacal complex of Alligator and Crocodylus emphasize further the differences between these two groups of crocodilian and provide support for the postulated marine ancestry of many or all of the Crocodylidae.     

Purple pigmentation in leaves of some tropical weed species

The photoacoustic spectroscopic studies of purple pigmented leaves revealed the occurrence of anthocyanins and betalains in some local weed species growing on soils with low moisture levels. The pigmentation intensities were higher in C₄ plants than in C₃ plants. An inverse correlation was observed between pigmentation intensities and soil moisture levels. Structure and expression of mouse alpha 1-acid glycoprotein gene-3 (AGP-3).

The genome of Mus domesticus has multiple genes of the alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP). Two cDNA clones were identified corresponding to AGP-1 and AGP-2. Moreover, two alleles of AGP-1 exist in inbred mice. The genomic DNA of the AGP-2 gene has been cloned and studied. Here we report the genomic organization of three M. domesticus AGP genes, the sequence analysis of the AGP-3 genomic DNA, and the expression of the AGP-3 gene. The major structural differences between AGP-2 and AGP-3 genes are located in introns 1 and 5. The low level of AGP-3 mRNA can be detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The molecular basis of the low level expression of AGP-3 and the possible classification of AGP-3 as a pseudogene are discussed.     

Factors governing the production of juvenile Atlantic salmon in Scottish streams

Data are presented to show how the number and growth of juvenile salmon in streams in the Scottish Highlands are influenced by various physical (temperature, water chemistry, depth and velocity, type of substratum) and biotic (food resources, competition, recruitment) factors.     

Cultured astrocytes from a syncytium after maturation

The formation of functional gap junctions between astrocytes was investigated during differentiation of these cells in culture. Precursor cells of GFA (glial fibrillary acidic) protein-positive astrocytes were cultured in a chemically defined medium as a homogeneous population. These cells were rarely coupled to one neighbour, as revealed by electrical and dye coupling and never formed a large syncytium, as investigated by injection and spread of Lucifer Yellow. Differentiation with respect to GFA protein accumulation can be induced in these cells by culturing in horse serum-containing medium. The formation of functional junctions developed within 2 weeks in about 20% of the cells. Coupled cells formed a large syncytium. When the astrocytes were co-cultured with primary cerebellar cells (consisting predominantly of small neurons) after the switch to serum-containing medium the percentage of coupled astrocytes increased to about 65%. Again the coupled cells formed a large syncytium. Since no physical contact was possible between the astrocyte cultures and the primary cerebellar cells the stimulation of coupling had to be signalized by soluble factor(s).     

Effects of cytochalasin B on Na+ content and cell volume of Entamoeba histolytica

Cells of Entamoeba histolytica accumulated K+ and extruded Na+ compared to the concentrations of those ions present in the growth medium. Pinocytic activity, measured by the uptake of horseradish peroxidase of 125I-polyvinylpyrrolidone, was high (up to 0.3 ml/ml cells per h). Upon addition of cytochalasin B, at a concentration (20 microM) that completely blocked pinocytosis, cells lost up to 40% of their Na+ content within 90 min; K+ content was not affected or increased slightly compared to control cells without the inhibitor. Cation loss was associated with cell shrinkage. The dose-response curves for the effects of cytochalasin B on pinocytosis and Na+ content were identical. These data provide direct evidence that pinocytosis is an important component of the homeostatic system for Na+.
