Epiphyllum hybrids served as a model for the study of reserve remobilisation from unfertilised flowers to the mother stem tissues. Early phases of the tube senescence characterised by wilting were connected with degradation and transfer of reserve substances to the somatic organs of the mother plant. The degradation process began in perianth and stamens and continued through the successive zones (receptacular, pericarpellar and pedicellar) of the flower tube. The phloem-mediated backward substance transport was naturally indicated by the red pigment of the perianth -- cactorubin, while integrity of cells and tissues and green colour of the flower tube were still preserved. For the later phases of senescence the loss of permeability and successive breaking of the cell integrity, connected with the colour change of the tube from green to red was evident. The functioning of vascular bundles especially their phloem parts conducting dissolved substances to the sinks in mother stem organs were preserved until late stages of senescence. The recycling and remobilisation of nutrients from all parts of unfertilised ovary and ovules may be considered as a part of the life strategy in the family Cactaceae as well as in other taxa evolutionarily adapted to life in extreme environmental conditions.  相似文献

Genetic diversity, population structure and interrelationships were investigated in eight populations of the common reed, Phragmites australis, in the Po Plain, Italy, by means of amplified fragments length polymorphisms (AFLPs) and random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs). Patterns of genetic diversity were analysed in relation to size, age and degree of human impact in the wetlands and compared with that of a distant population in Romania. Genetic distances between Po Plain clones and geographically distant clones were measured to determine the geographical extent of the gene pool.  相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) has been suggested as a useful indicator of elevation stress and, hence, distribution limits in plants. However, no plant studies have been carried out to test (i) whether FA shows a gradual increase towards the alpine distribution limit and (ii) whether FA responds to elevation stress independent of other stressors which is necessary for FA to be a useful indicator in this context. To test these two hypotheses, this 2-year field study investigated the dose–response relationship between elevation stress and FA in mountain birch (Betula pubescens) under contrasting levels of insect attack in northern Norway. The results showed that FA increased linearly from sea level towards the tree line in both years independent of insect attack, which had no observable effect on FA, i.e. insect attack did not appear to disturb the FA-elevation relation. Thus, in mountain birch, FA appeared to be a reliable indicator of elevation stress. Further investigation is now needed in order to develop this hypothesis.  相似文献

Question: We asked how landscape configuration and present management influence plant species richness and abundance of habitat specialists in grasslands in a ‘modern’(much exploited and transformed) agricultural Swedish landscape. Location: Selaön, south‐eastern Sweden (59°24’ N, 17°10’ E). Methods: Present and past (150 and 50 years ago) landscape pattern was analysed in a 25 km2 area. Species richness was investigated in 63 different grassland patches; grazed and abandoned semi‐natural grasslands, and grazed ex‐arable fields. Influence of landscape variables; area, past and present grassland connectivity, present management on total species richness, density and abundance of 25 grassland specialists was analysed. Results: Semi‐natural grasslands (permanent unfertilised pastures or meadows formed by traditional agricultural methods) had declined from 60% 150 years ago to 5% today. There was a significant decline in species richness and density in abandoned semi‐natural grasslands. Total species richness was influenced by present management, size and connectivity to present and past grassland pattern. Landscape variables did not influence species density in grazed semi‐natural grassland suggesting that maintained grazing management makes grassland patches independent of landscape context. The abundance of 16 grassland specialists was mainly influenced by management and to some extent also by landscape variables. Conclusion: Although species richness pattern reflect management and to some extent landscape variables, the response of individual species may be idiosyncratic. The historical signal from past landscapes is weak on present‐day species richness in highly transformed, agricultural landscapes. Generalizations of historical legacies on species diversity in grasslands should consider also highly transformed landscapes and not only landscapes with a high amount of diversity hotspots left.  相似文献

Corals at the world's southernmost coral reef of Lord Howe Island (LHI) experience large temperature and light fluctuations and need to deal with periods of cold temperature (<18°C), but few studies have investigated how corals are able to cope with these conditions. Our study characterized the response of key photophysiological parameters, as well as photoacclimatory and photoprotective pigments (chlorophylls, xanthophylls, and β‐carotene), to short‐term (5‐d) cold stress (~15°C; 7°C below control) in three LHI coral species hosting distinct Symbiodinium ITS2 types, and compared the coral–symbiont response to that under elevated temperature (~29°C; 7°C above control). Under cold stress, Stylophora sp. hosting Symbiodinium C118 showed the strongest effects with regard to losses of photochemical performance and symbionts. Pocillopora damicornis hosting Symbiodinium C100/C118 showed less severe bleaching responses to reduced temperature than to elevated temperature, while Porites heronensis hosting Symbiodinium C111* withstood both reduced and elevated temperature. Under cold stress, photoprotection in the form of xanthophyll de‐epoxidation increased in unbleached P. heronensis (by 178%) and bleached Stylophora sp. (by 225%), while under heat stress this parameter increased in unbleached P. heronensis (by 182%) and in bleached P. damicornis (by 286%). The xanthophyll pool size was stable in all species at all temperatures. Our comparative study demonstrates high variability in the bleaching vulnerability of these coral species to low and high thermal extremes and shows that this variability is not solely determined by the ability to activate xanthophyll de‐epoxidation.  相似文献

We studied indirect somatic embryogenesis in the callus tissue of Drosera spathulata Labill. originated from isolated leaves. Callogenesis was induced on MS medium (Murashige and Skoog 1962), supplemented with various concentrations of NAA and BA. Somatic embryos regenerated on half-strength MS medium supplemented with 20 μM of NAA or without growth regulators. The highest efficiency of somatic embryo production was achieved on hormone-free medium. Globular, heart-, torpedo- and cotyledonary-shaped embryos were observed in embryogenic clusters. Histological and scanning electron microscopy analysis verifies somatic embryogenesis. Regenerated plants were transferred to soil and were grown to maturity.  相似文献

An underlying assumption in many models of coexistence and species response to fragmentation is the trade-off between dispersal and competitive abilities among species. Despite a well-founded theoretical ground for this assumption, the mechanism itself has not been as thoroughly explored. Empirical studies of the dispersal/competition trade-off have so far mainly concerned the dispersal distance of single offspring, whereas most models where the trade-off is assumed concern dispersal rate, i.e. the number of offspring that is dispersed outside a local patch per time unit. When species differ in fecundity this should also affect the dispersal rate. We therefore investigated different aspects of dispersal ability and competitive ability in the recruitment phase for 15 wind-dispersed Asteraceae species. A trade-off was found between dispersal ability at the offspring level, i.e. distance travelled by single seeds, and competitive ability in the recruitment phase, but no trade-off was found between dispersal ability at the brood level, i.e. the dispersal ability of single seeds in combination with fecundity, and competitive ability in the recruitment phase. The results were supported both by cross-species analysis and analyses by phylogenetically independent contrast. If this is a general pattern then it is troublesome for models making the assumption that there is a trade-off between dispersal rate and competitive ability.  相似文献

To identify sequence variation associated with a selection response for heat tolerance in Drosophila melanogaster, we sequenced 1400bp of the heat shock protein 23 gene (hsp23) promoter region in four heat-selected and two control lines. The region was found to be variable for a specific (CATA) repeated sequence, and the sequence CTT seems to be a hot spot for mutation. The repeated tetranucleotide sequence was located in several short repeats scattered throughout the entire region. Similar variable repeats are also located downstream the of hsp23 gene in the intergenic region between hsp23 and hsp27. We detected nine different hsp23 alleles. Their frequencies in the selection and control lines seemed to be mainly determined by genetic drift. The function of the CATA repeats is not yet known, though these regions have homology to SAR elements located in the intergenic region between two hsp70 genes, suggesting a similar function.  相似文献

Pregnant women with epilepsy have to balance maternal and fetal risks associated with uncontrolled seizures against the potential teratogenic effects from antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Carbamazepine (CBZ) is among the four most commonly used AEDs for treatment of pregnant epileptic women. We previously reported that new-born children had a decreased head circumference after in utero CBZ exposure. This study investigates how prenatal exposure of CBZ influences the number of neurons in new-born and young mouse hippocampus, amygdala and cortex cerebri. Clinical studies describe inconclusive results on if prenatal CBZ treatment influences cognition. Here we investigate this issue in mice using two well characterized cognitive tasks, the passive avoidance test and the Morris water maze test. Prenatal exposure of CBZ reduced the number of neurons (NeuN-immunoreactive cells) in the new-born mouse hippocampus with 50% compared to non-exposed mice. A reduction of neurons (20%) in hippocampus was still observed when the animals were 5 weeks old. These mice also displayed a 25% reduction of neurons in cortex cerebri. Prenatal CBZ treatment did not significantly impair learning and memory measured in the passive avoidance test and in the Morris water maze. However, these mice displayed a higher degree of thigmotaxic behaviour than the control mice. The body weight of prenatally CBZ exposed five-week old mice were lower compared to control mice not exposed to CBZ (p = 0.001). In conclusion, prenatal exposure to CBZ reduces the number of neurons dramatically in areas important for cognition such as hippocampus and cortex, without severe impairments on learning and memory. These results are in line with some clinical studies, reporting that CBZ has minor negative effects on cognition. The challenge for future studies are to segment out what possible effects a reduction of neurons could have on different types of cognition, like intellectual ability and social interaction.  相似文献
