Cytogenetic,hybridization and molecular evidence of four cytological forms of Anopheles nigerrimus (Hyrcanus Group) in Thailand and Cambodia

Thirteen isoline colonies of Anopheles nigerrimus were established from individual wild‐caught females collected from cow‐baited traps at locations in Thailand and Cambodia. Three types of X (X₁, X₂, X₃) and 4 types of Y (Y₁, Y₂, Y₃, Y₄) chromosomes were recovered, according to differing amounts of extra heterochromatin. Four karyotypic forms were designed depending upon apparently distinct figures of X and Y chromosomes, i.e., Form A (X₁, X₂, X₃, Y₁), B (X₂, X₃, Y₂), C (X₁, Y₃), and D (X₃, Y₄). Forms C and D were new metaphase karyotypes discovered in this study. Form A appeared to be common in both Thailand and Cambodia. Forms B and D were found to be rather specific to southern and northeastern Thailand, respectively, whereas Form C was confined to Cambodia. Hybridization experiments among the eight isoline colonies, which were representative of four karyotypic forms of An. nigerrimus, demonstrated genetic compatibility in giving viable progenies and synaptic salivary gland polytene chromosomes through F₂‐generations. These results elucidated the conspecific relationship, comprising four cytological forms within this taxon. Supportive evidence was confirmed further by very low intraspecific sequence variations (average genetic distance = 0.002–0.007) of the nucleotide sequences in ribosomal DNA [second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2)] and mitochondrial DNA [cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and subunit II (COII)].     

Effect of aspirin on the pressor activity of endothelin

To examine the inhibition of prostaglandins to the pressor activity of endothelin, hemodynamic changes of dogs pretreated with aspirin in response to endothelin were compared with those of control. In control dogs, endothelin rose blood pressure due to vasoconstriction, with a transient vasodilation in some dogs in the initial phase. In dogs treated with aspirin, the initial vasodilation and the subsequent vasoconstriction were also noted, but the zenith of the total peripheral resistance was observed earlier, compared with control dogs. Thus, prostaglandins do not appear to have a role in the initial vasodilatory action of endothelin, but may modify the long lasting vasoconstriction in the late phase.     

Depression and Altitude: Cross-Sectional Community-Based Study Among Elderly High-Altitude Residents in the Himalayan Regions

Suicide rates are higher at high altitudes, and some hypothesize that hypoxia is the cause. There may be a significant correlation between rates of depression and altitude, but little data exist outside the United States. The purpose of the present study is to conduct a survey of depression among the elderly highlanders in Asia. We enrolled 114 persons aged 60 years or older (mean, 69.2 ± 6.7 years; women, 58.8 %) in Domkhar (altitude, 3800 m), Ladakh, India and 173 ethnic Tibetans (mean, 66.5 ± 6.1 years; women, 61.3 %) in Yushu (altitude, 3700 m), Qinghai Province, China. The two-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) and the geriatric depression scale were administered. A psychiatrist interviewed the subjects who had a positive score on the PHQ-2. The results of the interview with the residents conducted by the specialist showed that two cases (1.8 %) from Domkhar and four (2.3 %) from Qinghai had depression. Despite the high altitude, the probability of depression was low in elderly highlander in Ladakh and Qinghai. Our finding seems to indicate that cultural factors such as religious outlook and social/family relationship inhibit the development of depression.     

The structure of jujubosides A and B,the saponins isolated from the seeds of Zizyphus jujuba

Stepwise chemical and enzymatic hydrolyses of jujubosides A and B, the saponins of the seeds of Zizyphus jujuba, afforded prosapogenins I, II and III. The sequence and configuration of the sugar linkages in the saponins and the pro-sapogenins were determined from the PMR data and the application of Klyne's rule of molecular rotations and structures were assigned to jujubosides A and B.
