This paper assesses selective pressures that shaped primate life histories, with particular attention to the evolution of longer juvenile periods and increased brain sizes. We evaluate the effects of social complexity (as indexed by group size) and foraging complexity (as indexed by percent fruit and seeds in the diet) on the length of the juvenile period, brain size, and brain ratios (neocortex and executive brain ratios) while controlling for positive covariance among body size, life span, and home range. Results support strong components of diet, life span, and population density acting on juvenile periods and of home range acting on relative brain sizes. Social-complexity arguments for the evolution of primate intelligence are compelling given strong positive correlations between brain ratios and group size while controlling for potential confounding variables. We conclude that both social and ecological components acting at variable intensities in different primate clades are important for understanding variation in primate life histories. 相似文献

Habitat ranges of most species shift over time, for instance due to climate change, human intervention, or adaptation. These demographic changes often have drastic population genetic effects, such as a stochastic resampling of the gene pool through the “surfing” phenomenon. Most models assume that the speed of range expansions is only limited by the dispersal ability of the colonizing species and its reproductive potential. While such models of “phenotype‐limited” expansions apply to species invasions, it is clear that many range expansions are limited rather by the slow motion of habitat boundaries, as driven for instance by global warming. Here, we develop a coalescent model to study the genetic impact of such “boundary‐limited” range expansions. Our simulations and analysis show that the resulting loss of genetic diversity is markedly lower than in species invasions if large carrying capacities can be maintained up to the habitat frontier. Counterintuitively, we find that the total loss of diversity does not depend on the speed of the range expansion: Slower expansions have a smaller rate of loss, but also last longer. Boundary‐limited range expansions exhibit a characteristic genetic footprint and should therefore be distinguished from range expansions limited only by intrinsic characteristics of the species. 相似文献

Climate change is expected to exacerbate the current threats to freshwater ecosystems, yet multifaceted studies on the potential impacts of climate change on freshwater biodiversity at scales that inform management planning are lacking. The aim of this study was to fill this void through the development of a novel framework for assessing climate change vulnerability tailored to freshwater ecosystems. The three dimensions of climate change vulnerability are as follows: (i) exposure to climate change, (ii) sensitivity to altered environmental conditions and (iii) resilience potential. Our vulnerability framework includes 1685 freshwater species of plants, fishes, molluscs, odonates, amphibians, crayfish and turtles alongside key features within and between catchments, such as topography and connectivity. Several methodologies were used to combine these dimensions across a variety of future climate change models and scenarios. The resulting indices were overlaid to assess the vulnerability of European freshwater ecosystems at the catchment scale (18 783 catchments). The Balkan Lakes Ohrid and Prespa and Mediterranean islands emerge as most vulnerable to climate change. For the 2030s, we showed a consensus among the applied methods whereby up to 573 lake and river catchments are highly vulnerable to climate change. The anthropogenic disruption of hydrological habitat connectivity by dams is the major factor reducing climate change resilience. A gap analysis demonstrated that the current European protected area network covers <25% of the most vulnerable catchments. Practical steps need to be taken to ensure the persistence of freshwater biodiversity under climate change. Priority should be placed on enhancing stakeholder cooperation at the major basin scale towards preventing further degradation of freshwater ecosystems and maintaining connectivity among catchments. The catchments identified as most vulnerable to climate change provide preliminary targets for development of climate change conservation management and mitigation strategies. 相似文献

Nine-day-old harlequin (Hq) mice carrying the hypomorphic apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF)(Hq) mutation expressed 60% less AIF, 18% less respiratory chain complex I and 30% less catalase than their wild-type (Wt) littermates. Compared with Wt, the infarct volume after hypoxia-ischemia (HI) was reduced by 53 and 43% in male (YX(Hq)) and female (X(Hq)X(Hq)) mice, respectively (P<0.001). The Hq mutation did not inhibit HI-induced mitochondrial release of cytochrome c or activation of calpain and caspase-3. The broad-spectrum caspase inhibitor quinoline-Val-Asp(OMe)-CH(2)-PH (Q-VD-OPh) decreased the activation of all detectable caspases after HI, both in Wt and Hq mice. Q-VD-OPh reduced the infarct volume equally in Hq and in Wt mice, and the combination of Hq mutation and Q-VD-OPh treatment showed an additive neuroprotective effect. Oxidative stress leading to nitrosylation and lipid peroxidation was more pronounced in ischemic brain areas from Hq than Wt mice. The antioxidant edaravone decreased oxidative stress in damaged brains, more pronounced in the Hq mice, and further reduced brain injury in Hq but not in Wt mice. Thus, two distinct strategies can enhance the neuroprotection conferred by the Hq mutation, antioxidants, presumably compensating for a defect in AIF-dependent redox detoxification, and caspase inhibitors, presumably interrupting a parallel pathway leading to cellular demise. 相似文献

BackgroundBone is a frequent site for metastases among women with breast cancer. We conducted a study using the General Practice Research Database (GPRD), with linkage to the National Cancer Registry (NCR) and Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), to estimate the incidence of bone metastases in women with breast cancer in the United Kingdom.MethodsWe identified all women in the GPRD aged 20–99 with a first-time diagnosis of breast cancer between 2000 and 2006. To address potential underreporting, we developed and validated an algorithm to serve as a proxy for bone metastases. Bone metastases were defined as (1) a bone cancer diagnosis code on the same day or following breast cancer diagnosis date, or (2) another metastasis code plus codes consistent with bone metastases diagnosis or treatment using the algorithm. We sent questionnaires to a sample of general practitioners to validate these definitions.ResultsWe included 13,207 breast cancer patients (median age at diagnosis of 61 years) who contributed 70,885 person-years of follow-up. The majority of patients had stage 1 or 2 breast cancer (90.4%), and 2.6% had metastatic breast cancer at diagnosis. We identified 788 women (6.0%) with bone metastases after a median follow-up of 5.4 years. Questionnaire results validated the diagnosis of bone metastases in 88% of patients with a bone cancer code and for 70% identified with the algorithm.ConclusionThis is the first time the GPRD has been linked to HES and NCR to study the epidemiology of bone metastases, adding important information on the burden of bone metastasis. 相似文献

Relationships have frequently been found betweenangiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) genotype and various pathologicaland physiological cardiovascular outcomes and functions. Thuswe sought to determine whether ACE genotype affected maximalO2 consumption (O2 max) and maximalexercise hemodynamics in postmenopausal women with different habitualphysical activity levels. Age, body composition, and habitual physicalactivity levels did not differ among ACE genotype groups. However, ACEinsertion/insertion (II) genotype carriers had a 6.3 ml · kg1 · min1higher O2 max(P < 0.05) than the ACEdeletion/deletion (DD) genotype group after accounting for the effectof physical activity levels. The ACE II genotype group also had a 3.3 ml · kg1 · min1higher O2 max(P < 0.05) than the ACEinsertion/deletion (ID) genotype group. The ACE ID group tended to havea higher O2 max thanthe DD genotype group, but the difference was not significant. ACEgenotype accounted for 12% of the variation inO2 max among womenafter accounting for the effect of habitual physical activity levels.The entire difference inO2 max among ACEgenotype groups was the result of differences in maximal arteriovenousO2 difference (a-vDO2).ACE genotype accounted for 17% of the variation in maximal a-vDO2 inthese women. Maximal cardiac output index did not differ whatsoeveramong ACE genotype groups. Thus it appears that ACE genotype accountsfor a significant portion of the interindividual differences inO2 max among thesewomen. Groups of endurance-trained masters athletes (60 +/- 2 yr), older untrained men (62 +/- 1 yr), lean older untrained men (61 +/- 2 yr), endurance-trained young athletes (26 +/- 1 yr), and young untrained men (28 +/- 1 yr) were studied to obtain information on the separate effects of age, physical activity, and body fatness on glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. Each subject underwent an oral 100-g glucose tolerance test. Skinfold thickness was determined at six sites. The trained groups had a higher maximum O2 uptake capacity and lower sum of skinfolds than their sedentary peers. The lean older untrained group had a sum of skinfolds similar to that of the young untrained group. The masters athletes, young athletes, and young untrained men exhibited similar glucose tolerance whereas the two older untrained groups had an almost twofold greater total area under the glucose curve (P less than 0.05). The masters and young athletes had significantly blunted plasma insulin responses compared with the other three groups (P less than 0.05). The young and the lean older untrained groups had similar plasma insulin responses with significantly lower insulin levels than the older untrained group (P less than 0.05). These results provide evidence that regularly performed vigorous exercise can, in some individuals, prevent the deterioration of glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity with age. 相似文献

Summary The central projections of ocellar interneurones in two species of trichopterous insects Agrypnia varia F. and Limnephilus flavicornis F. were analysed by use of cobalt iontophoresis. The interneurones were classified into three groups: large-, medium- and small-caliber neurones based on the diameters of the axons. Seven large-diameter neurones project from each lateral ocellus into the central nervous system. Of these, four neurones terminate in the posterior slope (three ipsilateral and one contralateral). Three neurones possess branches in the contralateral posterior slope and proceed down the cervical connective into the thoracic ganglia. Medium-sized neurones connect the neuropiles of the three ocelli to each other. Small-diameter neurones contact the contralateral lobula and medulla of the optic lobes and connect the three ocellar neuropiles. Large-diameter neurones of the median ocellus were found to terminate bilaterally or ipsilaterally in the posterior slope. In the posterior slope four different subregions can be recognised: (1) the dorso-lateral, (2) the ventro-lateral, (3) the lateral, into which large-diameter interneurones of the lateral ocelli send branches, and (4) the medial, innervated by interneurones of the median ocellus.
