First record of non‐native hybrid catfish Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum × Leiarius marmoratus in the Upper Paraná River basin,Brazil

The aim of this study is to report the presence of a three non‐native hybrid long‐whiskered catfishes (family Pimelodidae) in the Upper Paraná River basin, Brazil. Genetic analyses demonstrated that the three presumptive hybrids were a result of the crossbreeding of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (central Amazonas River basin and Lower Paraná River) and Leiarius marmoratus (Amazonas, Essequibo and Orinoco rivers), producing a hybrid commonly known in Brazil as cachandiá. The potential threat to biodiversity, due to possible genetic contamination, competition and predation of wild stocks, of such artificially produced hybrid fishes is discussed.     

The same old mistakes in aquaculture: the newly-available striped catfish <Emphasis Type="Italic">Pangasianodon hypophthalmus</Emphasis> is on its way to putting Brazilian freshwater ecosystems at risk

In the state of São Paulo in southeastern Brazil, a dangerous decree allows the culture of hybrids and non-native extralimital fish species in the Paraná and East Atlantic River basins. We recorded the illegal importation and sale of the non-native striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus in northeastern, central-western, southeastern, and southern areas of the country. This species is already consumed across Brazil and is cultivated for ornamental purposes. Besides escapes from fish farms and ‘fish and pays’, P. hypophthalmus can reach natural environments through aquarium dumping and ornamental ponds, motivated by its large size that reach after being sold at small size. The species has been introduced in many countries, and if established in Brazil, could put native Brazilian biodiversity and ecosystems at risk. Although importing specimens of P. hypophthalmus is prohibited by law, Decree 62.243/2016 in the state of São Paulo creates a new opportunity for invasion. In fact, once a novel fish species is moved to a new continent, it is irrational to supposed that it will stay static just in the area for which it was intended. In general, the fish disperse in the novel area on their own, by escapes from captivity or deliberate and illicit releases by persons or associations. The unwise attitude of Brazilian decision-makers and lay people in their attempt to develop aquaculture with non-native species goes against the objectives of responsible aquaculture based in native species.     

In vitro inhibition of Trichomonas vaginalis growth by some ortho-phenacyloxy-benzyl alcohols and their derivatives

Some phenacyl ethers of different ortho-hydroxy-benzyl alcohols and analogues have been synthesized and tested for the in vitro activity towards Trichomonas vaginalis. The most active compounds had a minimum inhibitory concentration of 6.25 micrograms/ml and appeared to be of a certain interest as representative of a new type of anti-Trichomonas substances not containing a nitro group.     

Morphological study of the heart of Electrophorus electricus

Hearts of 7 Electrophorus electricus have been investigated on macroscopical and microscopical levels. Generally, the structure of the heart exhibits relative similarities with the other studied teleosts. The ventricular myocardium is mainly spongy and suggests that these structural features can offer an additional contraction power.     

Anatomical closure of the ductus arteriosus in the dog (Canis familiaris).

The ductus arteriosus was studied in 138 dogs (80 female and 58 male) aged from 6 h to 21 days. This experiment led us to conclude that the anatomical closure of the d. arteriosus starts within 96 h and is obliterated after 6 days in 100% of the animals studied. We have also evidenced that the closure starts in the medial part of the d. arteriosus and progresses to the pulmonary artery and aorta.     

Fine structure of the boundary tissue of the seminiferous tubuli of the vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus, G.; Microchiroptera)

Structurally the boundary tissue of the vampire bat seminiferous tubuli showed 2 to 5 layers of connective tissue in which elongated contractile cells and lamellar and/or fibrillar collagen were noticed. This boundary tissue forms the seminiferous tubular lamina propria. Its structure was more complex around the seminiferous tubuli near the Capsula testicularis than between the adjacent and contiguous tubuli into the testicular lobuli. The whole ultrastructural organization of the seminiferous lamina propria was described here.     

Interplays Between Covalent Modifications in the Endoplasmic Reticulum Increase Conformational Diversity in Nascent Prion Protein

Prion protein (PrP), the causative agent of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, is synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) where it undergoes numerous covalent modifications. Here we investigate the interdependence and regulation of PrP oxidative folding, N-glycosylation and GPI addition in diverse ER conditions. Our results show that formation of the single disulphide bond is a pivotal event, essential for PrP transport, and can occur post-translationally. Retarding its formation enhances N-glycosylation and GPI-anchoring. In contrast, lowering ER Ca²⁺ concentration inhibits N-glycosylation and GPI-anchoring. These data reveal tight interplays between the different ER covalent modifications, which collectively increase of PrP conformational diversity and may be important for its propagation.Key Words: Ca²⁺ homeostasis, ER-golgi transport, GPI-anchoring, N-glycosylation, oxidative folding, redox regulation
