The silkmoth chorion has provided a stimulating model for the study of
evolution and developmental regulation of gene families. Previous attempts
at inferring relationships among chorion sequences have been based on
pairwise comparisons of overall similarity, a potentially problematic
approach. To remedy this, we identified the alignable regions of low
sequence variability and then analyzed this restricted database by
parsimony and neighbor-joining methods. At the deepest level, the chorion
sequence tree is split into two branches, called "alpha" and "beta." Within
each branch, early- and late-expressing genes each constitute monophyletic
groups, while the situation with middle-expressing genes remains uncertain.
The HcB gene family appears to be the most basal beta-branch group, but
this conclusion is qualified because the effect of gene conversion on
branching order is unknown. Previous studies by Eickbush and colleagues
have strongly suggested that ErA, HcA, and HcB families undergo gene
conversion within a gene family, whereas the ErB family does not. The
occurrence of conversion correlates with a particular tree structure;
namely, branch lengths are much greater at the base of the family than at
higher internodes and terminal branches. These observations raise the
possibility that chorion gene families are defined by gene conversion
events (reticulate evolution) rather than by descent with modification
(synapomorphy).

Water quality and algal populations in the Vaal River Barrage Reservoir have been monitored extensively for many decades, because of its importance as a water source for the most densely populated area in South Africa. Although Aulacoseira granulata (Ehrenberg) Simonsen is frequently found and at it times dominates algal assemblages in the Barrage, Aulacoseira ambigua (F.Meister) Tuji & D.M.Williams has never before been recorded at this locality. During a countrywide proficiency-testing scheme for algae counting, coordinated by Rand Water, spiral-shaped diatom colonies with distinctly curved cells were detected during May 2015. Upon investigation, it was found that the spiral colonies were Aulacoseira ambigua f. japonica, its presence in the fresh waters of South Africa being recorded for the first time. Since their first appearance during May 2015, colonies of Aulacoseira ambigua f. japonica have been constantly present in the surface waters of the Barrage. Their presence at this site can be linked to increasing eutrophication in the Vaal River, because the spiral form is known to prefer eutrophic conditions. Centric diatoms rarely form spiral colonies and there is some confusion in the literature as to the identity of this particular form, therefore in this paper we discuss this taxon, its nomenclature and ecological significance. 相似文献

Problems with agitated cattle have been observed in slaughter houses. This study was conducted to determine if at the beginning of the slaughter process fewer handling problems were present. Time spent to cover a distance of 20 m in a single file race to the stunner was measured in 180 cattle. A positive relation was found (r=0.99) between the order of entry and time taken to traverse the single file runway within the groups of steers. Several basic ecological aspects of hemiepiphytes, such as abundance, diversity and distribution, are still scarcely addressed in scientific papers and thus remain poorly documented. The main aim of this study was to analyse the relative importance of different environmental factors on the abundance and richness of primary hemiepiphytes, secondary hemiepiphytes and root‐climbing lianas, at three altitudinal levels in one slope of the south Brazilian Atlantic forest. Fifteen 400‐m² square sample plots within the altitudinal levels at the slope of Serra Geral in northeastern Rio Grande do Sul were defined. Abundance of species, the percentage of host trees colonized by each life form, canopy openness, soil composition and tree density were recorded for each sample plot, besides climatic variables for each altitudinal level. We sampled a total of 1994 occurrences belonging to 16 species. The three life forms showed different compositions in the three altitudinal levels and presented different intensities in their response to the analysed variables. The abundance of secondary hemiepiphytes increased up to four times from the lower to upper altitudinal levels, while root‐climbing lianas increased almost twice in the same direction, following an increase in precipitation. The species richness decreased toward the upper level for the three life forms. Our study also identifies, for the first time, significant correlations between abundance of secondary hemiepiphytes and soil composition, and also with support availability (tree density). 相似文献

Abstract
Thoracic hyperkyphosis is a frequent problem and can impact greatly on patient's quality of life during adolescence. This condition can be idiopathic or secondary to Scheuermann disease, a disease disturbing vertebral growth. To date, there is no sound scientific data available on the management of this condition. Some studies discuss the effects of bracing, however no guidelines, protocols or indication's of treatment for this condition were found. The aim of this paper was to develop and verify the consensus on managing thoracic hyperkyphosis patients treated with braces and/or physiotherapy.Methods
The Delphi process was utilised in four steps gradually modified according to the results of a set of recommendations: we involved the SOSORT Board twice, then all SOSORT members twice, with a Pre-Meeting Questionnaire (PMQ), and during a Consensus Session at the SOSORT Lyon Meeting with a Meeting Questionnaire (MQ).Results
There was an unanimous agreement on the general efficacy of bracing and physiotherapy for this condition. Most experts suggested the use of 4-5 point bracing systems, however there was some controversy with regards to physiotherapeutic aims and modalities.Conclusion
The SOSORT panel of experts suggest the use of rigid braces and physiotherapy to correct thoracic hyperkyphosis during adolescence. The evaluation of specific braces and physiotherapy techniques has been recommended. 相似文献97.
Predators are a ubiquitous presence in most natural environments. Opportunities to contrast the behaviour of a species in the presence and absence of predators are thus rare. Here we report on the behaviour of howler monkey groups living under radically different conditions on two land-bridge islands in Lago Guri, Venezuela. One group of 6 adults inhabited a 190-ha island (Danto) where they were exposed to multiple potential predators. This group, the control, occupied a home range of 23 ha and contested access to food resources with neighbouring groups in typical fashion. The second group, containing 6 adults, was isolated on a remote, predator-free 0.6 ha islet (Iguana) offering limited food resources. Howlers living on the large island moved, fed and rested in a coherent group, frequently engaged in affiliative activities, rarely displayed agonistic behaviour and maintained intergroup spacing through howling. In contrast, the howlers on Iguana showed repulsion, as individuals spent most of their time spaced widely around the perimeter of the island. Iguana howlers rarely engaged in affiliative behaviour, often chased or fought with one another and were not observed to howl. These behaviors are interpreted as adjustments to the unrelenting deprivation associated with bottom-up limitation in a predator-free environment. 相似文献

The Glutaraldehyde test (GT), a rapid and inexpensive test, has been utilized empirically for many years in bovine practice
for diagnosing inflammatory diseases. GT is used primarily to demonstrate increased serum concentrations of fibrinogen and
globulin. Glutaraldehyde binds with free amino groups in fibrinogen and immunoglobulin to create a clot in a first degree
chemical reaction. The clotting time of the GT estimates the content of proteins produced in response to inflammation. The
applicability of GT for diagnosing inflammation in the horse has never been investigated. The objective of this study was
to determine the ability of GT to distinguish between acute and chronic inflammatory disease in horses. Thirty-seven horses
with suspected inflammatory diseases were evaluated using the GT, history, complete clinical examination and routine blood
analysis. GT-times, laboratory results and clinical outcome were compared statistically. Horses that were determined to be
acutely affected (based on history, clinical examination and routine blood analysis) tended to have a negative GT (75%). Results
of the GT did not correlate with blood fibrinogen concentration. Positive GT also predicted a fatal outcome in 69% of the
clinical cases. The results of this trial indicate that GT can be a useful screening test to distinguish between acute and
