Background  

Vertebrate neural development requires precise coordination of cell proliferation and cell specification to guide orderly transition of mitotically active precursor cells into different types of post-mitotic neurons and glia. Lateral inhibition, mediated by the Delta-Notch signaling pathway, may provide a mechanism to regulate proliferation and specification in the vertebrate nervous system. We examined delta and notch gene expression in zebrafish embryos and tested the role of lateral inhibition in spinal cord patterning by ablating cells and genetically disrupting Delta-Notch signaling.  相似文献

The arbuscular mycorrhizal status of two plant species, Biscutella laevigata L. and Plantago lanceolata L., was investigated on calamine spoil mounds in Boles^aw (southern Poland). Although B. laevigata is a member of the Brassicaceae, a family generally accepted as non-mycorrhizal, this species formed AM symbioses on both heavy metal-contaminated and non-contaminated sites. Besides vesicles and coils, arbuscules were also observed, especially in roots collected prior to seed maturity. Relative mycorrhizal root length and relative arbuscular richness were usually much higher in P. lanceolata than in B. laevigata but not absolute arbuscule richness. Roots of P. lanceolata showed higher colonisation than B. laevigata. Although roots were collected from plants in close proximity, no correlation in mycorrhizal parameters was found between the two species.  相似文献

Summary A mixture of ammonium palmitate,14C-sn-glycero-1(3)-phosphate, cyanimide and imidazole when heated for several hours formed significant quantities of phospholipids. These reaction products were shown by chromatographic, chemical and enzymatic procedures to be monopalmitoylglycerophosphate (MPGP), dipalmitoylglycerophosphate (DPGP) and monopalmitoyl cyclic glycerophosphate (cMPGP). A portion of the MPGP and DPGP possessed the same steric configuration as naturally occurring lysophosphatidic acid and phosphatidic acid. The yield of total phospholipid was maximal at temperatures between 60° and 90° after 8 h. When ratios of reactants were varied, up to 45% of radioactive glycerophosphate was converted into phospholipids. The average proportions of individual phosphatidic acids were: 60% MPGP, 27% DPGP and 13% cMPGP. Evidence was obtained for a synergistic relationship between cyanamide and imidazole in promoting the formation of phosphatidic acids. Saltmarshes are recognised worldwide to be among the most complex ecosystems, where several environmental factors concur to sustain their fragile functioning. Among them, soil–plant interactions are pivotal but often overlooked. The aim of this work was to use a structural equation modelling (SEM) approach to get new insight into soil–plant interactions, focusing on the effect of plant traits and abundance on soil, and test the effect of soil and/or plants on the entire community, monitoring changes in plant richness. The target halophytes Limonium narbonense and Sarcocornia fruticosa were sampled in the Marano and Grado lagoon (northern Adriatic Sea). Basal leaves of L. narbonense and green shoots of S. fruticosa were used to estimate plant growth, while the abundance of both species was used as a proxy of species competition. SEM was applied to test relationships between predictors and response variables in a single causal network. The flooding period (hydroperiod) negatively affected plant growth and soil properties, whereas plants decreased the intensity of soil reduction. Flooding did not directly affect species abundance or diversity, whose changes were instead driven by plant traits. The direct relationships between plant traits and species richness highlighted that species competition could be even more important than environmental stresses in defining plant diversity and zonation.  相似文献

Multi-tetrazole derivatives with conjugated structures were designed and investigated in this study. Using quantum chemistry methods, the crystal structures, electrostatic potentials (ESPs), multicenter bond orders, HOMO–LUMO energy gaps, and detonation properties of the derivatives were calculated. As expected, these molecules with conjugated structures showed low energies of their crystal structures, molecular layering in their crystals, high average ESPs, high multicenter bond order values, and enhanced detonation properties. The derivative 1,2-di(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)diazene (N2) was predicted to have the best density (1.87 g/cm3), detonation velocity (9006 m/s), and detonation pressure (36.8 GPa) of the designed molecules, while its total crystal energy was low, suggesting that it is relatively stable. Its sensitivity was also low, as the molecular stacking that occurs in its crystal allows external forces to be dissipated into movements of crystal layers. Finally, its multicenter bond order was high, indicating a highly conjugated structure.  相似文献

The molecular mechanism regulating dormancy release in grapevine buds is as yet unclear. It was formerly proposed that dormancy is maintained by abscisic acid (ABA)‐mediated repression of bud–meristem activity and that removal of this repression triggers dormancy release. It was also proposed that such removal of repression may be achieved via natural or artificial up‐regulation of VvA8H‐CYP707A4, which encodes ABA 8′‐hydroxylase, and is the most highly expressed paralog in grapevine buds. The current study further examines these assumptions, and its experiments reveal that (a) hypoxia and ethylene, stimuli of bud dormancy release, enhance expression of VvA8H‐CYP707A4 within grape buds, (b) the VvA8H‐CYP707A4 protein accumulates during the natural transition to the dormancy release stage, and (c) transgenic vines overexpressing VvA8H‐CYP707A4 exhibit increased ABA catabolism and significant enhancement of bud break in controlled and natural environments and longer basal summer laterals. The results suggest that VvA8H‐CYP707A4 functions as an ABA degrading enzyme, and are consistent with a model in which the VvA8H‐CYP707A4 level in the bud is up‐regulated by natural and artificial bud break stimuli, which leads to increased ABA degradation capacity, removal of endogenous ABA‐mediated repression, and enhanced regrowth. Interestingly, it also hints at sharing of regulatory steps between latent and lateral bud outgrowth.  相似文献

The synthesis of adenine from the polymerization of concentrated ammonium cyanide solutions is well known. We show here that guanine is also produced by this reaction but at yields ranging from 10 to 40 times less than that of adenine. This synthesis is effective at both +80 and −20°C. Since high concentrations of NH4CN are obtainable only by freezing, this prebiotic synthesis would be applicable to frozen regions of the primitive Earth, the Jovian satellite Europa and other icy satellites, and the parent body of the Murchison meteorite.
