A positive interaction is any interaction between individuals of the same or different species (mutualism) that provides a benefit to both partners such as increased fitness. Here we focus on seed dispersal mutualism between an animal (bonobo, Pan paniscus) and a plant (velvet tamarind trees, Dialium spp.). In the LuiKotale rainforest southwest of Salonga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo, seven species of the genus Dialium account for 29.3% of all trees. Dialium is thus the dominant genus in this forest. Dialium fruits make up a large proportion of the diet of a habituated bonobo community in this forest. During the 6 months of the fruiting season, more than half of the bonobos’ feeding time is devoted to Dialium fruits. Furthermore, Dialium fruits contribute a considerable proportion of sugar and protein to bonobos’ dietary intake, being among the richest fruits for these nutrients. Bonobos in turn ingest fruits with seeds that are disseminated in their feces (endozoochory) at considerable distances (average: 1.25 km after 24 hr of average transit time). Endozoochory through the gut causes loss of the cuticle protection and tegumentary dormancy, as well as an increase in size by water uptake. Thus, after gut passage, seeds are better able to germinate. We consider other primate species as a potential seed disperser and conclude that Dialium germination is dependent on passage through bonobo guts. This plant–animal interaction highlights positive effects between two major organisms of the Congo basin rainforest, and establishes the role of the bonobo as an efficient disperser of Dialium seeds. Natural hybridization is of marked importance from global to local biological diversity. In mangroves, species ranges overlap extensively with one another and species share a long overlap of flowering time. Although hybridization has been suggested, patterns of hybridization and the evolutionary potential of hybrids are not yet fully understood. This study provides molecular evidence for the parental origins and status of hybrids in the dominant mangrove genus Rhizophora based on comparisons of chloroplast and nuclear phylogenies and estimations of genetic relatedness and structure from inter‐simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that almost all species can act as maternal parents to hybrids and that hybridization can be bidirectional. Bayesian analyses indicate that hybrids are simple F1s, and no trace of backcrossing was detected within populations. Hybridization, for the most part, occurs almost only locally and dispersal of hybrid individuals is limited beyond the hybrid sites.  相似文献

We have developed a new technique for the generation of YAC contigs in the mouse genome that is based on the ability to detect overlapping clones by hybridization of shared IRS-PCR products. As a demonstration of the technique, a 5-cM, >5 megabase contig was developed on the distal half of mouse Chromosome (Chr) 1, spanning the region from Lamb2 to At3. The contig covers roughly 5% of the genetic distance of the chromosome and is comprised of more than 80 clones; 71 probes were assigned physical order on the chromosome, of which 59 were new markers generated in this study. Eight of the new probes were shown to be polymorphic between C3H/HeJ-gld and M. spretus. Three probes were mapped on a [(C3H/HeJ-gld x M. spretus) x C3H/HeJ-gld] interspecific backcross to integrate the physical map with a high-resolution genetic map of the region.  相似文献

The darkling beetle Pimelia rugulosa rugulosa Germar, 1824 was selected to investigate the process of colonization in a volcanic archipelago and the role of volcanism in determining spatial patterns of genetic variability. Analyses were conducted in the Aeolian Islands, located in the central Mediterranean directly off the Sicilian coast. Genetic variability and geographic structure were studied in individuals from each island of the archipelago based on sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 mitochondrial gene; a network approach was employed to identify haplotype lineages. A strong genetic structure, with no haplotype sharing among islands, was observed. Six separate lineages were identified that independently colonized different islands of the archipelago from the mainland and differentiated locally to form small haplogroups. Variability of observed haplogroups is correlated with island age and a positive correlation between tenebrionid diversity and mitotype diversity is reported. The mechanical behavior of mammalian mandibles is well‐studied, but a comprehensive biomechanical analysis (incorporating detailed muscle architecture, accurate material properties, and three‐dimensional mechanical behavior) of an extant archosaur mandible has never been carried out. This makes it unclear how closely models of extant and extinct archosaur mandibles reflect reality and prevents comparisons of structure–function relationships in mammalian and archosaur mandibles. We tested hypotheses regarding the mechanical behavior of the mandible of Alligator mississippiensis by analyzing reaction forces and bending, shear, and torsional stress regimes in six models of varying complexity. Models included free body analysis using basic lever arm mechanics, 2D and 3D beam models, and three high‐resolution finite element models of the Alligator mandible, incorporating, respectively, isotropic bone without sutures, anisotropic bone with sutures, and anisotropic bone with sutures and contact between the mandible and the pterygoid flange. Compared with the beam models, the Alligator finite element models exhibited less spatial variability in dorsoventral bending and sagittal shear stress, as well as lower peak values for these stresses, suggesting that Alligator mandibular morphology is in part designed to reduce these stresses during biting. However, the Alligator models exhibited greater variability in the distribution of mediolateral and torsional stresses than the beam models. Incorporating anisotropic bone material properties and sutures into the model reduced dorsoventral and torsional stresses within the mandible, but led to elevated mediolateral stresses. These mediolateral stresses were mitigated by the addition of a pterygoid‐mandibular contact, suggesting important contributions from, and trade‐offs between, material properties and external constraints in Alligator mandible design. Our results suggest that beam modeling does not accurately represent the mechanical behavior of the Alligator mandible, including important performance metrics such as magnitude and orientation of reaction forces, and mediolateral bending and torsional stress distributions. Three different methods for measuring xylem embolism due towater cavitation were compared—the acoustic method, thehydraulic method and the anatomical method. Young plants ofCeratonia siliqua L. were water stressed for 9, 16 and 23 d. Xylem cavitation was detected by counting ultrasound (100–300kHz) acoustic emissions (AE) from 1-year-old twigs (acousticmethod). Xylem embolism was detected by measuring the loss ofhydraulic conductivity of twigs of the same age (hydraulic method).The blockage of single xylem conduits was detected by perfusingSafranin into the xylem of 1-year-old twigs of stressed plantsand measuring the number and the diameters of non-conductingxylem conduits, under the microscope (anatomical method). It was noted that: (a) the number of AE and the loss of conductivityincreased with the water stress applied; (b) a linear relationseemed to exist between the number of AE and the loss of conductivity,suggesting that the AE counted could be only (or mainly) producedin the xylem conduits; (c) the vulnerability of the xylem conduitsto embolism was a direct function of their diameter; and (d)the measured loss of conductivity was of the same order of magnitudeas the theoretical one. The three methods gave fairly similar results. Nonetheless,they are not alternative to one another in that: (a) the acousticmethod allows continuous recordings to be made but does notprovide information about the actual damage suffered by plants;(b) the hydraulic method is very informative but destructive;and (c) the anatomical method is very useful both in phytogcographicaland in genetic improvement studies. Potted plants of Ceratonia siliqua L., growing in a greenhouse,were used to detect xylem cavitation (in terms of ultrasoundacoustic emissions AE) in internodes and node-to-petiole (N-P)junctions, after different periods of drought (9, 16 and 23d). Diurnal AE were only 100 in internodes of watered (W) plantsbut 320, 1250 and 2460 in 9-, 16- and 23-d stressed ones. InN-P junctions, AE were only 15 to 20% with respect to internodes. Stem perfusion with dye allowed measurement of the percentageof xylem conduit transverse area blocked by cavitation. Thiswas 2% in internodes of W-plants and 5.2, 13.8 and 40.4% inthose of 9-, 16- and 23-d stressed ones. In N-P junctions, 18.5%of the xylem conduit transverse area was blocked in the 23-dstressed plants only. The major resistance to cavitation exhibitedby the N-P junctions is interpreted in terms of their greaternumber of narrow xylem conduits. The percentage of blocked xylemconduits within a range of diameters showed that the narrowera xylem conduit, the less likely it was that cavitation wouldoccur. After rewatering, the release of the xylem blockage causedby cavitation occurred within 2 h. Our data suggest that C.siliqua can be considered to be a cavitation avoider, especiallyin its stem-to-leaf transition zones. Foliage construction cost (glucose requirement for formation of a unit foliar biomass, G , kg glu kg−1), chemical composition and morphology were examined along a light gradient across the canopies in five deciduous species, which ranked according to increasing shade-tolerance as Populus tremula < Fraxinus excelsior < Tilia cordata = Corylus avellana < Fagus sylvatica . Light conditions in the canopy were estimated by a hemispheric photographic technique, allowing ranking of sample locations according to long-term light input incident to the sampled leaves (relative irradiance). G and foliage carbon concentration increased with increasing relative irradiance in F. excelsior , T. cordata and C. avellana , but wereindependent of irradiance in F. sylvatica and P. tremula . However, if G of non-structural-carbohydrate-free dry mass was considered, it also increased with increasing relative irradiance in P. tremula . A positive correlation between the concentration of carbon-rich lignin and irradiance, probably a result of the acclimation to greater water stress at higher light, was the major reason for the light-dependence of G . Lignin concentrations were highest in more shade-tolerant species, resulting in greatest carbon concentrations in these species. Since carbon concentration and G are directly linked, the leaves of shade-tolerant species were also more expensive to construct. As the result of these effects, G increased faster with increasing leaf dry mass per area which was mainly determined by relative irradiance, in shade-tolerators. Given that shade-tolerant species had lower leaf dry mass per area at common irradiance and that this saturated at lower relative irradiance than leaf dry mass per area in the intolerant species, it was concluded that enhanced energy requirements for foliage construction might constrain species morphological plasticity and the upper limit of leaf dry mass per area attainable at high light.  相似文献
