1 Field experiments were conducted on maize and sorghum at three locations in the Amhara state of Ethiopia to determine the effects of mixed cropping on stemborer infestation, borer natural enemies and grain yields. In the cool‐wet ecozone of western Amhara, sole maize was compared with maize intercropped with faba bean, mustard, potatoes and cowpea. In the semi‐arid ecozone of eastern Amhara, the trial was conducted on both maize and sorghum with the companion crops haricot bean, sesame, cowpea and sweet potatoes. 2 The results showed that the predominant borer species in western and eastern Amhara were, respectively, Busseola fusca and Chilo partellus. In Addis Zemen, western Amhara, maize intercropped with mustard and potatoes had significantly lower pest numbers and percent tunnelling than other intercrops and the maize monocrop during the vegetative stage. In eastern Amhara, the cropping system did not significantly affect pest densities but damage to stem, ear or heads tended to be greatest when cereals were intercropped with sweet potatoes. 3 Parasitism of C. partellus by the braconid Cotesia flavipes was greater on maize than sorghum, and on maize it was greater with sweet potatoes than in other intercrops or sole maize. Cocoon mass number per plant did not vary significantly between treatments. 4 There were significant differences between treatments in yields of both sorghum and maize (per plant and per unit area) with the lowest yields observed when they were intercropped with a tuber crop. 5 The results suggest that simultaneous planting of the crop species selected has little advantage over monocropped maize. 相似文献

Endemic Hawaiian species in the genus Plantago show considerable morphological and ecological diversity. Despite their variation, a recent phylogenetic analysis based on DNA sequence data showed that the group is monophyletic and that sequence variation among species and morphotypes is low. This lack of sequence polymorphisms resulted in an inability to resolve species and population affinities within the most recently derived clade of this lineage. To assess species boundaries, population genetic structure and interpopulation connectivity among the morphologically and ecologically distinct populations within this clade, genetic variation was examined using eight microsatellite loci. Within‐population genetic diversity was found to be lowest in the Maunaiu, Hawai'i population of the endangered P. hawaiensis, and highest in the large P. pachyphylla population from 'Eke, West Maui. Isolation by distance across the range of populations was detected and indicated restricted dispersal. This result is likely to be attributable to few interisland dispersal events in the evolutionary history of this lineage. Genetic differentiation within islands tended to be higher among populations occurring in contrasting bog and woodland habitats, suggesting ecological barriers to gene flow and the potential role of ecological divergence in population diversification. Overall, these results are consistent with findings from phylogenetic analysis of the entire lineage. Our data bring new insights regarding patterns of dispersal and population genetic structure to this endemic and endangered group of island taxa. As island environments become increasingly fragmented, information of this type has important implications for the successful management of these fragile populations and habitats. 相似文献

Objective
HIV “elite controllers” (ECs) spontaneously control viral load, but some eventually require combination antiretroviral treatment (cART), due to a loss of viral control or a decline in CD4 T-cell counts. Here we studied the CD4 T-cell count dynamics after cART initiation among 34 ECs followed in U.S. and European cohorts, by comparison with chronically viremic patients (VIRs).Methods
ECs were defined as patients with at least ≥5 viral load (VL) measurements below 400 copies/mL during at least a 5-year period despite never receiving ART and were selected from the French ANRS CO18 cohort, the U.S. SCOPE cohort, the International HIV Controllers study and the European CASCADE collaboration. VIRs were selected from the ANRS COPANA cohort of recently-diagnosed (<1 year) ART-naïve HIV-1-infected adults. CD4 T-cell count dynamics after cART initiation in both groups were modelled with piecewise mixed linear models. Results
After cART initiation, CD4 T-cell counts showed a biphasic rise in VIRs with: an initial rapid increase during the first 3 months (+0.63/month), followed by +0.19/month. This first rapid phase was not observed in ECs, in whom the CD4Tc count increased steadily, at a rate similar to that of the second phase observed in VIRs. After cART initiation at a CD4 T-cell count of 300/mm3, the estimated mean CD4 T-cell gain during the first 12 months was 139/mm3 in VIRs and 80/mm3 in ECs (p = 0.048).Conclusions
cART increases CD4 T-cell counts in elite controllers, albeit less markedly than in other patients. 相似文献25.

Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was first imported into Kenya in 1991 from Pakistan for control of Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). First releases were made at the Kenya coast in 1993 and a few recoveries of the parasitoid were made the following year. Additional foreign exploration for C. flavipes was conducted in central India in 1996 and 1998, which resulted in additional importation of the parasitoid for subsequent releases in eastern and southern Africa. Region-wide releases commenced with releases in Mozambique in 1996, Somalia in 1997 and Uganda in 1998. By 2005, many releases had been made in 10 countries in East and Southern Africa with establishment being reported in all of them except Eritrea but including Ethiopia where releases had never been made. This paper describes the progress made in the release and establishment of C. flavipes in East and Southern Africa and quantifies the rate of spread from the initial release sites in Kenya. 相似文献

Surveys were completed in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda and Zanzibar to assess the lepidopteran stem borer species diversity on wild host plants. A total of 24,674 larvae belonging to 135 species were collected from 75 species of wild host plants belonging to the Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Typhaceae. Amongst them were 44 noctuid species belonging to at least nine genera, 33 crambids, 15 pyralids, 16 Pyraloidea species not yet identified, 25 tortricids and three cossids. The noctuid larvae represented 73.6% of the total number of larvae collected, with 66.3, 3.5 and 3.8% found on Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Typhaceae, respectively. The Crambidae, Pyralidae, Tortricidae and Cossidae represented 19.8, 1.9, 2.5 and 0.1% of the total larvae collected, respectively, with 90.4% of the Crambidae and Pyralidae collected from Poaceae, and 99.7% of the Tortricidae collected from Cyperaceae. The lepidopteran stem borer species diversity in the wild host plants was far more diverse than previously reported. 相似文献

Samples of grain from three spring barley cultivars of differing malting quality were collected at regular intervals during four weeks prior to harvest. The samples were dried, then assessed for relative grain hardness using the "Milling Energy" test. Ranking order of the cultivars for this character, which relates strongly to malting quality, was unaltered throughout. In a further experiment, it was demonstrated that selection for milling energy could be successfully practised on oven-dried grain collected six weeks after ear emergence. 相似文献
