In order to collect basic information for a resistance management program of Aphis gossypii Glover to carbosulfan, studies to evaluate fitness costs associated to this resistance were conducted under laboratory conditions. For this purpose, we studied the stability of carbosulfan resistance in A. gossypii populations with differing initial frequencies of resistance and compared life-history traits of carbosulfan-susceptible and resistant strains. The stability of resistance was followed in three populations with initial frequencies of 20, 50 and 80% of resistant individuals. The susceptibility to carbosulfan was monthly estimated by using the diagnostic concentration of 32 ppm. The biology of carbosulfan-susceptible and resistant strains was evaluated in cotton plants kept under controlled climatic conditions. The resistance to carbosulfan was unstable, that is, there was a significant increase in the susceptibility of different populations of A. gossypii to this insecticide in the absence of selection pressure. Comparison of biological traits between carbosulfan-susceptible and resistant strains showed that there is a fitness cost associated with resistance. The resistant strain showed lower fecundity, shorter reproductive period and lower longevity than the susceptible strain. The net reproductive rate (Ro) was 14.04 and 43.18 and the finite rate of increase (lambda) was 1.25 and 1.30 females/female/day for the resistant and susceptible strains respectively. Therefore, the instability of carbosulfan resistance in A. gossypii can be exploited in resistance management programs.  相似文献

One hundred and forty-five thermal-sensation tests by subjects were performed in unhomogeneous thermal environments and the whole body and the lower leg thermal-sensations were discriminated with physical data of the thermal environments using the discrimination analysis and the expanded theory of quantification II which is able to deal with data including quantitative continuous-variables and qualitative category-variables simultaneously.

The effect of alternative carbohydrate sources to sucrose for plant regeneration from long-term cell cultures of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.cv.Penncross) and japonica rice (Oryza sativa L.cv.Nipponbare) was studied. Both maltose and lactose supported a higher degree of regeneration compared to sucrose; in 8-and 19-month-old cultures of creeping bentgrass, the frequencies of regenerating calli remained at 76–93% and the numbers of plants regenerated were 8 to 36-fold higher. In 35-month-old cultures of japonica rice, 2–4% of the calli were capable of regeneration on maltose and lactose media. These results indicate that loss of plant regeneration in long-term cultures is caused, at least in part, by specific cultural conditions and not by genetic changes.  相似文献

Polymorphism of carbonic anhydrase-I (CA1) was found by electrophoresis in an aboriginal group of Mindanao, Philippines, with a remarkably high frequency of variant types. The frequency of the variant allele was estimated at .256. The variant isozyme designated CA1 3Negrito (CA1 3N) is electrophoretically indistinguishable from the "Guam" variant and may be regarded as a potential anthropological marker in the Western Pacific.  相似文献

Serum samples of the three tribal Negrito populations in the Philippine Islands (127 from Zambales, 87 from Bataan, and 93 from Agusan) were tested for Glm(1,2,3 and 17), and G3m(5,6,11,13,14,15,16, and 21), and Km(1). The GMpatterm of the Negritos is characterized by three haplotypes, Gm1,17;21, Gm1,2,17;21, and Gm1,3;5,11,13,14, which is also characteristic of Mongoloid-related populations, especially with high incidence of the latter haplotype. They also have the haplotype, Gm1,17;5,13,14, prevalent in Africa, New Guinea, and northern Australia, suggesting an ancient link between the Negritos and the New Guinean-Australian group. Two unusual samples of G3m(15) positive without G3m(16) observed in Zambales Negritos suggest the presence of Gm1,17;5,11,13,14,15 haplotype in the population. Baloxavir is approved in several countries for the treatment of uncomplicated influenza in otherwise-healthy and high-risk patients. Treatment-emergent viruses with reduced susceptibility to baloxavir have been detected in clinical trials, but the likelihood of widespread occurrence depends on replication capacity and onward transmission. We evaluated the fitness of A/H3N2 and A/H1N1pdm09 viruses with the polymerase acidic (PA) I38T-variant conferring reduced susceptibility to baloxavir relative to wild-type (WT) viruses, using a competitive mixture ferret model, recombinant viruses and patient-derived virus isolates. The A/H3N2 PA/I38T virus showed a reduction in within-host fitness but comparable between-host fitness to the WT virus, while the A/H1N1pdm09 PA/I38T virus had broadly similar within-host fitness but substantially lower between-host fitness. Although PA/I38T viruses replicate and transmit between ferrets, our data suggest that viruses with this amino acid substitution have lower fitness relative to WT and this relative fitness cost was greater in A/H1N1pdm09 viruses than in A/H3N2 viruses.  相似文献

Genetically modified plants expressing insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) offer valuable options for managing insect pests with considerable environmental and economic benefits. Despite the benefits provided by Bt crops, the continuous expression of these insecticidal proteins imposes strong selection for resistance in target pest populations. Bt maize (Zea mays) hybrids have been successful in controlling fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), the main maize pest in Brazil since 2008; however, field-evolved resistance to the protein Cry1F has recently been reported. Therefore it is important to assess the possibility of cross-resistance between Cry1F and other Cry proteins expressed in Bt maize hybrids. In this study, an F2 screen followed by subsequent selection on MON 89034 maize was used to select an S. frugiperda strain (RR) able to survive on the Bt maize event MON 89034, which expresses the Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2 proteins. Field-collected insects from maize expressing the Cry1F protein (event TC1507) represented most of the positive (resistance allele-containing) (iso)families found. The RR strain showed high levels of resistance to Cry1F, which apparently also conferred high levels of cross resistance to Cry1A.105 and Cry1Ab, but had only low-level (10-fold) resistance to Cry2Ab2. Life history studies to investigate fitness costs associated with the resistance in RR strain revealed only small reductions in reproductive rate when compared to susceptible and heterozygous strains, but the RR strain produced 32.2% and 28.4% fewer females from each female relative to the SS and RS (pooled) strains, respectively. Consistent with the lack of significant resistance to Cry2Ab2, MON 89034 maize in combination with appropriate management practices continues to provide effective control of S. frugiperda in Brazil. Nevertheless, the occurrence of Cry1F resistance in S. frugiperda across Brazil, and the cross-resistance to Cry1Ab and Cry1A.105, indicates that current Cry1-based maize hybrids face a challenge in managing S. frugiperda in Brazil and highlights the importance of effective insect resistance management for these technologies.  相似文献
